Pesach è l’occasione per imparare a conoscere la stupenda storia, avventurosa ed avvincente, di Mosé. Attualmente potete vedere su Netflix il docudrama “Testament: The Story of Moses” (un mix fra fiction di alto livello con effetti speciali ed intermezzi di approfondimenti di studiosi) dove spicca il bellissimo personaggio della madre adottiva, interpretata dall’attrice turca Tülay Günal (in una delle foto la vediamo ritratta in un affresco -in salvo al Museo di Damasco- originario della sinagoga di Dura Europos in Siria, scoperta nel 1932 e distrutta dall’ISIS). In questa Festa gli ebrei ricordano di essere stati per ben 400 anni schiavizzati dai tanto ammirati antichi egizî che a suon di frusta gli facevano costruire le città sinché, sotto la leadership di Mosé, furono condotti in libertà. Lanciatisi in quella rocambolesca e precipitosa Fuga, con la soldataglia del Faraone alle calcagna, quei coraggiosi profughi ebrei non poterono panificare e così mangiarono pane non lievitato: in occasione della Festa di Pesach, mangiano pani azzimi per ricreare l’atmosfera dei loro avi. La professoressa Susannah Heschel (in foto Gallery), memore del clima d’inclusione gay friendly nella sua famiglia (suo padre era Rabbi Heschel che marciava al fianco del pastore MLK Jr.) aggiunge simbolicamente alla sua tavola di Pesach un’arancia, un abbraccio ideale al movimento di liberazione LGBT. Agli ebrei, dunque, viene giustamente insegnato che l’essere schiavi è un disvalore, un insegnamento non scontato dato che si sentono tanti nostalgici del comunismo i quali (maledicendo l’Ucraina e la sua Resistenza) dicono di “ricordare” che durante l’Unione sovietica e la DDR le cose non stessero poi così male (“il lavoro e il pane non mancavano”) e che anche oggi gli ucraini posso pure stare bene sotto i russi. Purim is one of my favorite holidays because I get to bake and give out hamentashen! Ideally, I would give to everyone in my life, but obviously there are some limiting factors, like location, dietary restrictions, and cost. This year though, I made an effort to take dietary restrictions off of that list. In addition to my regular cookies (which are dairy, made in my kosher kitchen) (first photo), I baked a batch of gluten-free and vegan cookies (second photo), and I crocheted cookies for those families who I knew wouldn't be comfortable eating the ones I baked (third photo). It was a challenge for sure, but I'm so happy with how everything turned out! Purim fun with my main squeeze 💕 💌 We decorated cards to send to the IDF - Amelia even wrote in hebrew on her card all by herself, just copying what I’d written on mine 🥹 🍪 Amelia made some hamentashen to bring home 🪇 We made noise makers to shake anytime Haman’s name was mentioned ✡️ We learned about and completed the 4 mitzvot (good deeds) of Purim: 📜 Reading the Megillah (the story of Purim) 🛍️ Mishloach Manot (food packages to gift to friends) 🫶🏻 Matanot L’evyonim (gifts for the poor) 🍽️ Seudah (a festive meal) 🤳🏻 and of course we had fun playing with the photobooth props 👑 Amelia even won the costume contest! I made them after #purim ended but I think I like these #hamantaschen (red raspberry preserves, Nutella and grape jelly flavors) better than the ones I made last year. Last year I used applesauce as a substitute for the eggs but this year I stuck with eggs. I did though have to use baking soda plus vinegar in place of baking powder which I think we had run out of. It means a lot to me to be able to do this because I often find myself unable to immerse myself deeper into traditions and festivities at this point in my life, but this feels so nice! Lindsay and Zadie have spent weeks planning their Renaissance-themed Purim party and they were both so relieved and thrilled that so many people showed up in costume!! They love celebrating and sharing their traditions--and delicious hamantasche cookies--with their friends. #Purim #ChagSameach #ChagPurimSameach While Lindsay and Zadie were baking cookies (thank you, @dollys_diningroom ), I have spent several weeks trying to figure out as many #AGIGRenFaire costumes as I could using almost exclusively AG and Pleasant Company pieces!! How many can you pick out? I really wanted to try and illustrate how many options there are, and how to put something together from what you may already have! If you want to buy or make a Renaissance noble person outfit that is fab, but you absolutely don't have to! To make this assortment of costumes I pulled items from the following collections: Kaya, Felicity, Caroline, Josefina, Kirsten, Addy, Molly, Julie, Just Like You, Truly Me, Evette, Kavi, and Lila and current mix-and-match pieces! The key is lots of layers, a belt of some kind with little bags or accessories attached to it, a layered skirt with one or both hiked up (use a safety pin or tie it up with ribbon like the skirt on Kaya here) and some kind of headwear, a hat or crown or kerchief. You can make a super easy bodice/corset with a black tube sock like the one Ruthie is wearing on her pirate costume. Just cut off the foot and shimmy the tube part onto your doll over a chemise or peasant blouse (Josefina and Julie have LOTS of options for those, and almost every BeForever nightgown can double as a top as well!). Chag Purim Sameach! I hope you had a beautiful celebration, remembering Adonai's goodness and love for His people. Following my last post I must say that I enjoyed reading the book of Esther again and with some fresh revelation about the text. This particular verse had me rolling with laughter because no sooner had they finished was he called to the final banquet before his ultimate demise. The reason for my laughter was the fact that these were the same people goading him on before. The same ones who cast their "lots" for one whole year starting with Nisan 1, to Adar to see which was the best time to secure the demise of the Jewish People. Turns out there is never a good time to curse those Adonai has blessed. I thought of how quickly their support for him changed and how deceptive ungodly counsel can be. It should be a warning to all those seeking the demise of those in covenant with Adonai and it should encourage us all to always seek the counsel of those who love and honour Adonai. It very much reminded me of how the Adversary operates, he lures you, whispers in your ear, encouraging you to hate your neighbour, tricking you into becoming proud and arrogant which blinds you to your own shortcomings, fills you with hate and malice and quickly leaves you in your mess when you run into trouble or only lets you see what you've really gotten yourself into when it's too late. My encouragement to those who have allowed themselves to fall into the Adversary's trap is repent! Turn from your wicked ways. Turn to Adonai! Turn to Him and receive mercy before it's too late. Turn from the fruitlessness of hate and divination. Turn from idolatry and receive Yeshua as your personal Lord and Mashiach.
