Today is a very sad day. My childhood dog, Lady, crossed the bridge to doggy heaven. We got Lady as a rescue in 2014 when I was in 4th grade. The rescue said they thought she was about 2 years old when they found her. She came off of a van from South Carolina in the middle of a winter night in late December (December 29). I remember in great detail the excitement of getting to stay up past my bedtime to greet the new dog when she arrived! I was the one who ran out to greet the driver. As my mom was signing the paperwork, he gave me the leash, and I ran Lady up to our fenced in backyard. She was extremely attached to me ever since then. She would follow me everywhere and always wanted to be in my room with me when I had friends over. Unfortunately, I wasn’t completely aware of the value of her love and loyalty when I was younger, so I would close the door in her face when she would follow me and my friends up the stairs to my room😭😭 This makes me very sad to think about how she must’ve felt to be excluded from the fun her person was having. As I have gotten older and learned more about the strong, unbreakable bond between humans and dogs, I have observed firsthand the unconditional love and loyalty our dogs give to us humans. As I reflect back on my time with Lady (one of her nicknames was Lady Bug), I am able to cherish the fond memories I have with her and will hold them close to my heart for as long as I may live. I hope she was able to forgive me for my immaturity and insensitivity towards her in the past. She will be forever missed but never forgotten by everyone she met. We had to put her to rest this evening due to the fact that she had a fluid sac that was enclosing her heart. She was put to eternal rest on her favorite chair in the family room since our vet was kind enough to offer us that option of at home euthanasia. Another piece of my heart hurts a ton because I was not there for her in her final moments, and I feel guilty like she may have thought that I didn’t care about her. Swiffer gave us almost 17 amazing years. I’ve lived more of my life with her in it than without. She outlived two of my own dogs, and did so gracefully. She is the reason we have had so many dogs. The perfect first dog that came into our lives like a gift from fate itself. It was such a hard decision, but it was time. I’m so thankful that I could be there in the end and say my goodbyes. I did ask her for one last favor, and if she makes good on it then she, Carrie, and Iggy will all be getting kisses from me on the other side of the rainbow bridge. [TAKEN IN 2019] One of my favorite types of photoshoots to do with Maddie were photoshoots we would have in our backyard. She was such a beautiful and photogenic dog. As I’ve stated before she was my model when I had no one photograph growing up. She was my most reliable model I’ve ever had. Anytime I wanted to do a photoshoot she would be right there for me to take photos of her. I would say “Maddie wanna go outside” and we would go outside. She would be ready to do photoshoots. She knew house to pose perfectly. (She also knew if she would pose she would get treats.😅So she listened to me when I would have her pose.😇) Best model ever. ❤️I miss our photoshoots.💔☹️I’m just very lucky to have had Maddie in my life growing up because if I didn’t have her, I probably wouldn’t be into taking portraits of animal and people. A trip down memory lane… I’ve had this breed since I was a kid. This dog right here was a special one! Bell was the type of dog any kid would want. I would play soccer in the backyard and swim in the pool with her on hot Arizona days. She also absolutely loved to jump on the trampoline with me and my sister. I really do love this breed and I’m blessed to have years of great memories with them in it and look forward to all the new ones I’ll make as the years go by. I'm not going to tell you about my own story (because I've done this before, and let's be honnest, you're all bored of it by now!). Instead I will tell you about one of my favourite stories. It's a story I grew up with and which I relate to a lot. It's called "Belle et Sébastien" by Cécile Aubry. The little boy running around the mountain with his dog resonated a lot with my own life in the Pyrenees. I remember a time when I had trousers with a hole in them, exactly like Sébastien's. One day my grandmother mended them and it made me so upset! 😂 Here's a photo of my own version of "Belle". He was called Tess and he was like a brother to me. I have such fond memories of this dog. This past Sunday on February 25th I lost the best dog a man can ask for, Simba. Found him dumped in the woods back in 2011 as a puppy, he’s been through all the military moves, deployments and even me getting out of the military. I always knew he would be there for me just like I would be there to take care of him. I can’t put into words how much I loved Simba and how much it hurts to know that he’s gone. I know he’s in a better place and I hope he knew I was there for him to the very end.
