Unfortunately last night we noticed that Emmy had taken a turn and wasnโt doing so hot. She still had quality of life but not 100% so we decided that Thursday would be when we put her to sleep. This morning we went to check on her and she had taken a further turn. She was cold and on her way out. We managed to book an appointment to get her put to sleep today. I held her to give her some body heat and keep her going. She made it to the appointment where she went quickly and peacefully. We will forever miss you our Emmy Serafina. Saying goodbye to fosters is always difficult, especially when a goodbye isnโt for an adoption. Hospice fostering isnโt my first choice but, if ever given the chance, I would choose to foster Mickey every time. Loving him (and losing him) changed me for the better, and I know he also made a big impression on everyone he met at PAWS, so he deserves his own post here. ๐ค We still donโt know what caused his sudden decline, but his top differential was some type of neurological disease, possibly/probably cancer. Whatever ailment he had precipitously stripped away his vigor and shine. Meeting a cat like Mickey was as rare and as special as catching a glimmer of the โgreen cometโ, which was seen only once in the night sky over the last 50,000 years. His eyes matched the aurora borealis green and he had the cutest wittle underbite. No matter how he was feeling, he gave the most comforting embraces, placing his paws on your shoulders. Why does it feel harder to realize that we are not, and never were, in control of the outcome? I think itโs because we realize how powerless we really are. We realize how much of our lives are out of our control. We can do certain thingsโchoose the right foods to eat, take excellent care of our animals, drive safelyโand yet, we cannot escape pain and death. There are so many things that are out of our control. This shift in perspective can be difficult, especially at first. Suddenly everything feels meaningless or hopeless. If we couldnโt keep the being we loved most alive, then why should we bother to do anything? We do not have the power to decide life or death. We may think we do, but this is an illusion. There are things about the universe and our lives that we do not understand. Your loved oneโs gorgeous and infinite soul had a journey here, just as we all do. You were privileged to witness and be a part of that journey, but it was not yours to control. Itโs a hard place to realize none of this was our fault. What is our grief without the blame and guilt? What does our loss mean when weโre not in control? How do we honor our loved oneโs life and transition without holding ourselves accountable for their death? These are questions I had to ask myself in my grieving process. I knew this day would come, I just didnโt think it would be so soon๐ฅบ. I never set out to adopt a senior cat, but a few months after adding Grayson to the family, the same rescue approached me about Kucherov and he fit right in. I knew once I found out you were actually 12 and had hypothyroidism that our time might be limited. As wonderful and loving as he was to me, I think he was even more helpful as a big brother to Grayson, teaching him to grow up and be a cat. Unfortunately last Friday I brought him in because he was breathing odd, and they removed a half liter of fluid from his lungs. All of the diagnoses were terminal, and I didnโt want to see him suffer anymore. I let him pass on to the other side this morning, surrounded by pets and kisses. I wouldnโt trade these last four years for anything. Please donโt let the heartbreak of losing a pet dissuade you from taking in a senior. Part lab, part Shar Pei, Brutus was a happy, lovable mutt ๐ฅฐ Hazel was spunkier than her buddy, Brutus, and a total snuggler ๐ค Hazel and Brutus both passed within 10 months of each other. It was super hard for Kristin & Scott, but they absolutely love this idea, and are so very excited! ๐ From Scott: "My wife, Kristin, adopted Brutus first. He was in a shelter for almost a year. Nobody wanted him. And he was just the sweetest. Got along with all dogs, all people, could take him anywhere. When she went to the humane society to get him, he had treats all over his kennel. Wouldn't eat them. She went in to his kennel, sat down, offered him a treat. He walked to the far wall, peed on the wall and came and sat next to her and that was it. Love at first sight!" "Hazel came into our life several years later. My sister was fostering a pregnant mom and Hazel was the runt of the bunch. All of her siblings were adopted and she was left behind. my sweet little roo. there are no words for my sadness & heartbreak. i couldnโt have asked for a better partner in crime for almost 17 years. we always joked that you chose us the day we saw you, just 9 weeks old. you trampled your puppy sister to show us your spunk, and we brought you home the next weekend. in actuality, i fully believe you were beamed down to earth from outer spaceโthereโs no other way you couldโve been this weird. you showed IVDD who was the boss not once, not twice, but THREE times. you ate kimchi, banana peels, and even coffee grounds & lived to tell the tale. you & mischief were thick as thieves, and indeed, you did steal clothes, tennis balls, and food. korey is forever down to a 999-piece puzzle after we told you not to eat any pieces during game night! most of all, you grew up with me. you were my little sidekick through high school & college, and you helped me celebrate TWO new decades of life. you were by my side all through my 20s, through the good times, and through the worst times. all of the snuggles, licks, snarls & snaps, and silly antics brought me the most joy. it was the honor of a lifetime to be your hooman. i love you more than i have words for. say hi to mom & dad up there for me. see you on the other sideโyou have so many hoomans & pup friends waiting for your arrival. ๐๐ฉท 6.17.07โ4.29.24

Sometimes life hits you so hard, you struggle to get back up again. ๐Last week I said goodbye to my beloved family cat Bandit, who was my little shadow. He was an old boy at 18 years of age and honestly it was so hard to go in on Wednesday morning and go alpaca trekking. The day before my old skunk Alaska had also passed aged 9. Those who have been trekking know I was a zoo keeper previously and Alaska was one of my zoo animals that came home with me๐ ๐Grief affects people in so many ways.
