I am desperately missing the magic and support we experienced on Bug’s dream trip to @gktwvillage. Sometimes it feels like the three of us (myself, Bug, and Cub) are an island. It feels isolating. It feels like we have people floating by our island and chucking trash on it. It feels like we lack any time of depth in our support system. It feels like I’m keeping the waters smooth ish for my kids but under the surface I’m frantically trying to fill in all the places where we (especially my kids) are missing the support/presence. The dream trip was more than a vacation. It was more than a fun week. It was an experience where we were all surrounded all the time by people who were supportive and loving. They filled in the spaces and I didn’t have to paddle so hard under the surface. It’s kind of like the feeling you get when you have a newborn and they sleep through the night for the very first time and you sleep....hard. Then two days later when you’ve had a couple nights of sleep they are up all night long. Suddenly the new parent exhaustion is a hundred times worse than before they slept through the night. That’s what the trip felt like. Exhaustion. Rest. #MissionMonday comes from @DreamFactoryKC with Allie sharing her story: “I had my wish granted when I was 6 years old. I got to travel to Give Kids The World (GKTW) and visit Disneyworld. My dream was to meet the Disney princesses. I had the wonderful opportunity to travel with my mom and dad and 3 siblings. It was an incredible experience filled with so many activities for us to do just at the GKTW village alone. I got to meet my favorite Disney princess Cinderella and I will never forget that perfect day. This was the trip of a lifetime and it made me feel so special because everyone treated me like royalty. I truly do not have enough words or time to express what this trip meant to me. After traveling back home I could not stop thinking about the trip. I attended many of the Dream Factory events including my favorite, the movie night. Once I reached about 16 years old, I wanted so desperately to volunteer knowing what this organization had done for me. I was busy throughout high school and after graduation, I was so unsure about where my life was heading. I then had the wonderful thought of finally being able to volunteer. I applied online and shortly heard back. I was beyond excited. I attended my first meeting as a volunteer and immediately signed up for my first event. I was able to help out and I felt like I fit right in. I was so blessed to be welcomed with open arms and happy, smiling faces. I knew that I was in the right place doing what was best for me at this point in my life. I wanted nothing more than to help the people who had made such an impact in my life. I know i can never fully thank them for everything they did so I try to do what I can to help other people who made a wish just like I did. My Bug loves nature. While we were in Florida she sat on this concrete barrier wall watching a rather large alligator swim around. We had gone to this area to play on the playground but ended up spending the whole time watching this mama alligator. Only in Florida I suppose. My word for 2020 is repair. He’s never in his lifetime seen or touched the ocean. He’s never been in a huge body of water. He’s never been to the beach or run from the crashing waves. Watching him was probably one of the top three most magical moments I’ve experienced in his coming on 7 years. It’s permanently imprinted on my heart. * * * * Switching topics divorce feels a lot like a failed adoption. Most often you don’t just marry your partner you marry their family too. Divorce is basically the adoption of extra family null and void. You go from big birthday parties or holiday gatherings to just you and your kids as a family and then you send your kids to celebrate with their family since they are no longer the same. Divorce has many many layers of grief attached to it, even when it was a needed decision. Divorce is not magical, at least not for me. However watching my kids experience new things for the first time will always be magical. Always. We actually got to meet the men who built the Orion rocket. They were there that day taking pictures because one of the men was retiring. I just happened to ask one of the men to take our picture and found out about their purpose for being there; such a fun story to add to our book of memories. @boywonderbrand and @princessawesomegirls sent the kids their shirt/dress for our trip to @kennedyspacecenter! How perfect right! Outer space, the sky, science....they are our things as a family. We love space especially. As a dad I pray my children always look skyward for guidance, for escape, and for hope. Cub saved my back (literally) so much by begging to push his sister. He and I got anywhere between 15-20 thousand steps each day during our wish trip but Bug only got between 1-3 thousand steps. This was on purpose to conserve her energy for the things she really wanted to see and do. Cub put it beautifully when he said “(Bug) needs to stay in her wheelchair so she saves her body battery because we are having extra fun this week”. On this particular day we were super excited to meet so many characters and ride some rides. @waltdisneyworld was absolutely amazing with their service, special care for Bug’s unique needs, and their magic genie pass that allowed us to go to the front of every single line. We wouldn’t have been able to do even a quarter of what we did if it hadn’t been for that magical genie pass. @gktwvillage was our home base that began our day with magic and smiles and ended our days with magic and smiles. As much I I loved thumping the Raiders (more than I can say!), it might be surpassed by meeting this amazing kid! P.J. told me he ran for an 80 yard touchdown for his football team! We got to surprise him with tickets to the Super Bowl LIV ! P.J.’s parents were told that he had profound deafness, cerebral palsy, that he would never walk, and would have a limited life span of 18 years. P.J. has never shied away from any challenge and has played sports such as baseball, track and football. He is a quarterback for the Smith-Cotton High School football team this year. P.J. is always smiling, practices with the team, lifts weights and is known as the pull-up king. Night came and we stayed in the parks to enjoy a fireworks show. Figured while we were celebrating birthday, Christmas, and Halloween at the village we should see fireworks too. We could just celebrate all the major secular holidays in one week. Bug was very unsure of most of the human like characters at the parks. However apparently a nearly 8 foot hairy Chewbacca can approach her in the dark and her response is a laid back “hey chewy”. This dad was slightly taken aback by the hairy hand on my shoulder but it was so sweet. Everyone was trying to get their picture with the big guy but he was on his way to another part of the park. He did however stop, “talk” to the kids, take pictures, and get/give hugs. Bug just beamed. She felt so utterly special and fortunate in that moment. Cub was just in awe. Neither kid was much of a Star Wars fan prior to our trip but they are now diehard fans. Since meeting the Storm Troopers, Rey, Chewy, R2D2, 3DPO, and others they have watched almost all of the Star Wars movies and shows. They have put Star Wars books, legos, toys, clothes, and random kitchen equipment on their holiday and birthday lists. Cub basically survived on ice cream during our trip. The village ice cream shop is open from before breakfast to after dinner. It was an absolute highlight of our trip. One day a pair of teens/young adult danced and sang and danced some more. We stayed in the dining room just to watch them having so much fun. Even in our wish trip we sat down to observe and pay respect to Shabbat. @kidskippot gifted us this gorgeous challah cover. Our trip began on a Friday. How amazing to begin our week of magic with a sense of reverence and thankfulness and joy. Taking a few moments of pause allowed us to refocus on making memories to last a lifetime. We all had a little post trip depression. We missed our unlimited time together. We missed the sheer magic and newness if it all. The trip took a lot out of Bug (completely worth it). She has struggled since returning home with turning blue, neuropathy pain, muscle and joint pain, and seizures. Every day we talk about our trip and the fun and magic we experienced. We leave for Bug’s wish trip on Friday. We are so very excited for the magic and experience and time away. This will be my first time traveling as a physically altered trans man. My first time to travel as a single father with two young children. My first time flying with a wheelchair. Despite all of my anxiety I am all smiles and excitement for our upcoming trip. My kiddos are over the moon excited.
