The Church and Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in the city of Oaxaca de Juárez (Mexico) is an example of New Spanish Baroque architecture. The first construction projects for the building date back to 1551, when the Antequera de Oaxaca's City Council ceded a total of twenty-four lots to the Dominican Order for the construction of a convent in the city. However, it was not until 1608 that the conventual complex of Santo Domingo was inaugurated, still unfinished. Throughout its history, the Convent of Santo Domingo has been the scene of several important events in the history of Mexico: it was converted into a military warehouse, a stable, closed to Catholic worship in times of Jacobin secularism of the governments emanating from the Reform War, and then returned again to the Church by agreement of Porfirio Díaz. Alberto took us to all major attractions including the Famous Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe, the Pyramids, Xochimilco, land makes, Chapultepec and many good restaurants to enjoy some delicious Mexican Cuisine. What I loved about my experience was the accomodations and feeling safe. We had my toddler grandson with us, the van was a total success, we didn't have to load and unload car seat nor stroller plus made as many stops as needed. This is our 9th year using Alberto as our personal guide when we travel to Mexico and quite frankly, I wouldn't travel without hiring him. He's professional, knowledgeable of the history a d knows how to get around. The Angel as we know her was finally finished in 1910, in time to commemorate 100 years of independence from Spain, and in time to be present for the start of Mexico’s next revolution, which would rage from 1910 to around 1935. The Angel is actually a winged statue of Victoria, the ancient Roman goddess of victory. Did you know that... It took thirty years from the idea of constructing the building was introduced to its completion. In 1904, Adamo Boari, who was an Italian civil engineer started the construction of the Palacio de Bellas Artes. However, several circumstances made it difficult to complete the design that was meant to take five years. Such factors include the French Revolution. In 1932, the project was restarted by Federico Mariscal (Mexican architect). The project was completed in 1934. Like in most Mexican cities, earthquakes have led to the sinking of the building. HOUSE OF MONTEJO It was built between 1543 and 1549 by Francisco de Montejo y Leon “El Mozo” by appointment of his father, in order to provide a home for the Spanish conquerors. The main façade, which has not been altered, is considered the most valuable jewel of the art and civil plateresque architecture of the nation. The hand carved stone, stands out for the delicate original gures of personages and mythological characters. On top of the central balcony, stands the heraldic coat of arms of the Conqueror’s family. The technical study reveals that the lower part of the porch is European handmade, and the upper section, of a more recent native performance.
