It's been a long time since I did architectural paintings, so I figure that now is as good a time as any to give it another try! So today's subject is the Fontanna Della Vergogna ("The Fountain of Shame"), located in Palermo, Italy. This was a painting I'd started about a year ago, after finding a cool photo of it online. But I ended up putting it aside for a long time, as I was working on other projects. So now that I found the time that I had decided I was going to fully commit to finishing this piece, here it is! Deep in the cloisters of Santa Caterina (near the Fountain of Shame 🤷♀️) is a bakery run by nuns. It has the best canoli that are filled for you at point of purchase. It was nearly impossible to select what to take with us! Pretoria Fountain The fountain in the Renaissance style has an eventful history. Initially commissioned for a private Tuscan villa in the 16th century, the imposing structure found its destination in Palermo. From Greek and Roman mythology on the railings. Diana, Adonis, Venus, Apollo, Mercurius and other figures of ancient rank and fame line the nt balustrades. At the top, a three-tiered fountain column with water features awaits you. Rich in mystical and animal figures, such as geese, turtles and sea monsters *An interesting fact about the Genius statue: Camillani, the fountain builder, originally had a statue of Bacchus in mind. Since Fontana found its way to Palermo, Antonino Veneziano, a poet from Monreale, was commissioned to interpret the structure according to regional aspects. If the people of Palermo had assumed that Spanish rule would see their city fall into neglect, it was most certainly with the most profound shock that they beheld the first great public monument of the Viceregal age - The Praetorian Fountain, or, as the locals would rename it, the Fountain of Shame. It is a potent sign of the growing reach of Spain in the 16th century that neither this majestic fountain, its materials, nor even its artificer, were of Sicilian provenance. Indeed, it was in the Florence of 1554 that Tuscan sculptor Francesco Camilliani began work on the marble, on a commission of great prestige. For the order came not from some merchant or nobleman of the city, but Don Luis Álvarez de Toledo, son of the Spanish Viceroy of Naples, Don Pedro de Toledo. Don Luis was a man of particular taste, and exalted standing, but not merely from his father's rank. In 1539, his elder sister, Eleonora de Toledo, had wed the Duke of Florence himself, Cosimo de' Medici, in a union which bound the fortunes of Tuscany to those of Spain. Don Luis, therefore, resolved to build a villa and garden worthy of his ascendant status. Cammilliani's work would arouse the greatest of admiration even before its completion, as Giorgio Vasari, the very father of art history, observed the incomplete marble, and declared it, "A breathtaking fountain which has no equal in Florence, and perhaps nor in Italy...". Yet fortune is fickle, and literally so for the House of Alba, for not twenty years would pass before Don Luis, saddled with debts, was forced to break up his splendid Florentine holding. For the sum of thirty thousand scudi, his ostentatious fountain would be purchased not by a Tuscan, nor even a Spaniard, but the Senate of Palermo. Deciding to re-erect it before the Praetor's Palace, in 1574 the Senate had the entire fountain transported, in 664 pieces packed into 69 crates, by sea to Sicily. The Palermitans however, having been largely shielded from the Italian Renaissance, were shocked at the nudity of the sculptures, and the cost of the enterprise, for which the iconic monument would ever after be named the 'Fontana della Vergoga' - the 'Fountain of Shame'!

The fountain represents the 12 Olympians and other mythological creatures.
