Widow Adventures 2024, Day 8. Today we went to three different places: Obidos, Nazaré, and Fatima. There was a lot of walking so I was able to work out those sore muscles. Obidos is a castle fort on a hill where much of the city has been rebuilt at one time or another. There were many churches and of course souvenir shops. They are known for their “Ginginja” (sour cherry liqueur) which is served in dark chocolate little cups. Did I buy some? Why yes I did! I also bought an authentic Portuguese tile to bring home. Next we went to Nazaré where we had lunch and looked at the sites. Did you know that the world’s tallest surfing waves are there? The last record set was 86 feet! Finally we went to Fatima where it rained the whole time (did I bring the umbrella I packed?! Nope!). It was a beautiful spot and it felt very sacred to me. I would have liked to have spent more time in both Nazaré and Fatima - maybe next time. I am enjoying traveling with these ladies. They are Peaches on the Pie of Life! Tomorrow we leave Obidos and head towards Lisbon. First stop: Sintra. PS: This first set of pics is all Obidos. The r eat will be in my stories, Thanks for following along. Rainy day. Hoping the weather doesn’t wash away the pollen of the fruit blossoms. 🤞 Met a neighbour on my walk. 😉 A black banana slug. There were several. This one came over to investigate me. My “Joan” iris is blooming, which is such a delight each spring. A unique variety named after the lady, who gifted it to me. Several rhododendrons have joined the party. And a poorly-focussed thimbleberry blossom. Sorry for the quality. The lighting was dim and the blossoms are relatively small. But the significance: thimbleberries are native plants - so they’re showing up on their own volition - to add diversity to our garden. ANZAC DAY IN ALBANY Well this turned out a bigger day than we expected 😮 After a late start as it was colder than we have been used to lately. We headed off into Albany to have a look at some old history of Kels family. We found her grandfathers house he grew up in, the old Woollen Mill where a few of her relatives worked, however is now a historical site and not much remaining. And stumbled across an Anzac parade happening within the town centre. Full on I must say, bigger than what we have seen back in Gippsland. Murphy making a name for himself amongst 2000 people singing along to National Anthems and the Last post. Yes we cannot take him anywhere. We finish off with the tourist drive and a walk up the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial. A really beautiful place and you must put it on your list while in Albany. There is a bit more family history to be uncovered while we are here, so much to see.
