The Department of Communication, Art, and Design Hosts Showcase of Student Work The Gardner-Webb University Department of Communication, Art, and Design is currently hosting a student art showcase throughout the Communication Studies Hall. The semester showcase contains the collective work of over 30 students and over 60 pieces of artwork from a variety of mediums and disciplines. The pieces, selected by a panel of faculty judges, include paintings, digital photographs, sculptures, digital designs and prints among many other types of art. The exhibit originated from Professor Matthew Jones' desire to see student work more prominently displayed in the art section of the building. Jones would go on to share the idea with his fellow faculty and staff members, noting that “we all thought it would be a good idea to highlight the whole department, so this partnership just grew from there.” The completed show was ultimately the collaborative effort of the department’s full faculty and staff as well as the students who submitted their art for display. For Jessica Maloney, a professor who specializes in photography and videography, the student showcase was particularly special. “I have been dreaming all year of filling this hall with images and projects that our students have done. It is so exciting to see drawings, paintings, and sculptures that we don’t always get to see on a daily basis,” said Maloney. “The whole point of the showcase is to show what everyone is doing in all of our classes, that way we can feature the great variety of work we have here,” she continued. Gardner-Webb University Breaks Fundraising Records With its Ninth Annual Double Dawg Day Gardner-Webb University recently held its ninth annual Double Dawg Day fundraising event, breaking university fundraising records by raising $1,404,689 for use with scholarships, academic programs, and athletics. This year’s fundraising event, which has been held annually since 2015, was the most successful in the event's history. Outside of monetary records, the University also broke its record for most gifts received in a single day. Additionally, Gardner-Webb University ultimately received contributions from 1,366 donors in every U.S. state and various countries, including Canada, France, United Kingdom, Sweden, Austria, United Arab Emirates, India, South Africa, New Zealand, and Thailand. Double Dawg Day featured a special fundraising system where the donations of all outside donors would be matched by special donors who agreed to give dollar-for-dollar. Many stayed anonymous, but some notable matching donors included GWU Associate Vice President for Communications and Marketing Noel Manning, Andrew Day, Randall Hall, and the Gardner-Webb Board of Trustees. With the notable success of this year’s event, Gardner-Webb’s Vice President for Advancement Nate Evans shared that “we are truly grateful for our donors and their remarkable generosity. (Their) investments are catalysts for progress that raise the bar and help us pursue excellence.” The fundraising event also allowed donors to invest in the specific departments or programs that mean the most to them. Among academic departments, the School of Divinity raised the most money with their total of $111,680. The Searight PACE program was second with $102,825 raised, and the College of Arts and Sciences came in third with $68,079 raised. Gardner-Webb Students to Start Needlework Club Focused on Crafting, Community, and Creativity A group of Gardner-Webb students are starting a new needlework club open to the Gardner-Webb student body. The club is set to educate about textile arts, provide a crafting community on campus, and showcase creative projects made by its members. The club, named Threaded Together, is set to officially launch on April 23, 2024, with an interest meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. (more details about location to come). Threaded Together was founded by students Forest Blackston, Storm Brooks, Jasmine Kremer, and Slawka Ndubuisi. Kremer and Brooks serve as co-presidents, Blackston serves as vice president, and Ndubuisi serves as treasurer. “Threaded Together is a needlework club about everything textile. It’s a relaxing environment to be social and do art together,” said Kremer. Blackston further added that “the club is big on community. It's a place where people can come and feel safe to relax and do needlework.” Kremer wants students to know as official operations begin that “anyone is welcome, whether you just want to come and check it out or join us to relax and make art. This is supposed to be a relaxing space that helps you destress.” “This is a really good community, and even if you have anxiety about coming to the club meetings because you have little experience or don’t know anyone, come and join us anyway because you never know what friends you are going to make,” continued Brooks. Gardner-Webb’s Department of Communication, Art, and Design Holds 2nd Annual Professional Takeover Day Gardner-Webb University’s Department of Communication, Art, and Design recently held its second annual professional takeover day, where industry professionals from all across the media gave lectures and held panels for students. The event was organized by Dr. Kortni Alston Lemon, the chair of the Department of Communication, Art, and Design, and aimed to “help students build their human and social capital,” according to Lemon. The professional takeover gives students a chance to “learn from industry professionals about the latest communication, art, and design trends and cultivate their network,” said Lemon. The ultimate goal is to give Gardner-Webb students a competitive advantage. Notably, this year’s professional takeover was significantly upsized from last year's inaugural event, featuring a wider variety of speakers, guests, and covered career fields. "The Second Annual CAD Professional Takeover Day has gotten bigger and even better with the support of staff, faculty, and students. We have more guest speakers in Boiling Springs, Charlotte, and as far away as Washington, D.C.,” said Dr. Lemon. ‘These Things Work’ – Gardner-Webb to Host Career Fair Providing Students with Internship and Job Opportunities Gardner-Webb University is set to host a career fair on April 10, 2024, in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center featuring a variety of companies, both local and national. The career fair, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., is set to feature “between 70 and 100 employers,” according to Micah Martin, director of the Gardner-Webb Center for Personal and Professional Development. The fair will provide students with a wide range of opportunities, ranging from internships to full-time jobs all across the country. “We have every local company and nonprofit you can think of, plus a lot of regional companies, too. We’ve had companies as far away as Dallas, Texas, and Baltimore, Md., hire our students,” said Martin. Martin encourages all students to attend the fair, even if you’re not currently looking for a job or internship. “You need to go to the fair to practice talking to people professionally, having professional conversations, and to learn how to network. It’s an hour commitment at most, you can learn so much from just that hour,” said Martin. Gardner-Webb University is currently hosting an art exhibition featuring the work of senior art students, Megan Addington, MaryEvelyn Murray, and Isabel Gallimore. The exhibit, which opened on March 21, 2024, in Tucker Student Center’s Ali Pouryousefi Memorial Gallery, showcases a culmination of the work that the seniors have done during their time at Gardner-Webb. Artist Megan Addington described her work as being representative of causes she cares about, such as veterans and their treatment once returning home. “My work reflects my values. My grandfather was a soldier, so I have very patriotic roots,” said Addington. Addington further noted that, as an artist, she likes creating work with materials like charcoal, graphite, and oil over acrylic. She added that she also has a love for realism. “I see it as a fun challenge to get (my art) close to the real thing or to make the art seem like it's real,” said Addington. After she graduates, Addington plans to pursue a master’s degree in art and teach painting and drawing at a university. “I’ve also considered picking up a biology minor (with my master’s degree) and pursuing medical illustration and teaching it,” noted Addington. Addington ultimately credits her family for the love and support that helped her pursue an art degree at Gardner-Webb. “My mom, my dad, my sister, and my three dogs Bailey, Bently, and Charlie are all my biggest supporters,” Addington said. Artist MaryEvelyn Murray describes her work as an exploration of her memories and notes that her show “ended up being a retrospective based on the theme of nostalgia.” “A lot of my pieces end up being memories that I want to capture in a way that feels more emotional and real than a photograph or writing. That’s what the strength of art is to me,” said Murray. Several student organizations at Gardner-Webb University recently sponsored their third annual March of Pie fundraiser for the March of Dimes. This fun event allows both students and community members to throw pies at other students, faculty, and staff in exchange for a donation. The pie throwing took place on March 20 in front of Tucker Student Center. It featured an auction style donation system where members of the campus community could bid for the right to pie the event’s nominees. Among those nominated were Dean of Students Lesley Villarose, Director of Housing Shelbilyn Boelsche and University Vice President and Athletic Director Dr. Andrew Goodrich among others. All proceeds from the event went to the charitable organization March of Dimes, described by organizer Cyrus Richer as “a national association that leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies through advocacy, research, and education.” In explaining the origins of the event, Richer noted that he wanted to find an engaging way to bring attention to the March of Dimes’ cause. “We have a D+ rating for our country overall (from the March of Dimes) on maternal healthcare. In order to shed a little bit of light on that, I wanted to host an event that would both be fun and bring awareness,” said Richer. Dear Gardner-Webb: I owe you everything. I came here insecure and fearful, and I am leaving ready to win the world. I came here alone, and I am leaving with a community of friends for life. I came here with a lot of expectations, and you beat them all. 10 photos and a Thank You will never be enough, but that’s all I have at my disposal now. Or maybe, the only other thing that I can do to make you proud of me is going out there in the wild world and fight all my battles to the best of my abilities, and demonstrate that all your former students-athlete are ready for everything thanks to you. From tomorrow I’ll be out there full of memories and experiences that shaped the person I am today, but I wanna use this platform to thank as well all the GWU people that took part of my journey that is for one day or for two years because without them none of all this would have been possible; so if you are reading I’ll remember you forever and please let’s be in touch. Meet Chloe! She is a graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences. She majored in biology with a concentration in biomedical sciences and a minor in chemistry. Chloe is a PhD grad student in the IPP program at Wake Forest. Right now, she is in the beginning stages of her first clinical trials using alternative methods for treating prostate cancer rather than chemo. Fun Fact: Chloe was one of the original members of Crossfit GWU. She has picked up powerlifting and is currently training for nationals. She does personal training on the side!!
