-- En we vliegen er weer in 😅🎿 -- #HideOutside 🇱🇺 We beginnen deze keer mellow met een goed geplaatst sunweb dealtje ❄. Het laatste jaar was geen topper. Na Jeroen zijn scheur in de kuit, moest ik er nog een schepje bovenop doen: een gescheurde achillespees was een waardige opvolger niet waar? Jammer genoeg levert deze blessure een revalidatie van ongeveer één jaar op. We zijn nu 10+ maanden verder en het werd eens tijd om het voetje te testen tegen de diepsneeuw. Na een paar dagen pistjes oefenen, werden we getrakteerd op sneeuw. En gaan! Allee, of vallen dus ☝. 🇬🇧 We'll start off mellow this time with a nicely placed Sunweb deal ❄. The past year hasn't been great. After Jeroen's calf tear, I had to one-up it: a torn Achilles tendon seemed like a worthy successor, right? Unfortunately, this injury entails about a year of rehabilitation. We're now over 10 months into it, and it was time to test the foot against the powder. After a few days of practicing on the slopes, we were treated to snow. And back to the ice! 🧊 #HideOutside 🇱🇺 Iets sneller dan gepland stonden we terug in Cogne. We zagen na een lekker koude dip de temperaturen terug stijgen en vreesden ervoor dat het wel eens de laatste optie van het ijsklimseizoen zou kunnen zijn. Snel, snel, snel de bus in en hop terug naar de Aosta vallei 🚐💨 . Deze keer vertrokken we s'ochtends niet vanuit een lekker warm hotelletje maar vanuit de van. Nu kwam de installatie van de diesel heater echt van pas! 🥶😅 🇬🇧 A little sooner than expected we were back in Cogne. After a good cold dip we saw the temperatures rising again and feared this might be the last ice climbing window of the season. Quick, quick, quick back into the bus and wooosh to the Aosta Valley 🚐💨. Only this time we wouldn't be leaving out of a nice warm hotel in the morning, but out of our little home. In de winter gebruiken we onze dakkoffer om ook de ski's mee te krijgen, maar in de zomer is onze kleine genoeg om alles in te laden voor een onbeperkte tijd reizen. One of our favourite rest day activities: The Via Ferrata ⛓️ #HideOutside 🇱🇺 Ooh wat is er niet leuk aan het beklimmen van een verticale wand op ijzeren sporten en trappen? Wij vinden het een top activiteit die je actief houdt zonder jezelf te sterk uit te putten. De uitzichten krijg je er zomaar bij en meestal is het volledig gratis! 🤫 De Osmand maps app is onze vaste waarde om ze eender waar te vinden. Het is een echte aanrader! 🇬🇧 Ooh what's not to love about scaling vertical rock on iron rings and steps? It's such a nice half day activity to keep you moving, while not straining yourself too much. Most of the time you get the added bonus of beautiful views and more often than not it's completely free! 🤫 The Osmand maps app works wonders for us to find them anywhere and everywhere. We heartily recommend to try it!
From ice to rock / From snow ❄ to sun ☀ in the span of one day! Italy is the bomb! Moving on (up) again 💪 #HideOutside 🇱🇺 De gedwongen pauze in onze plannen zorgde ook voor minder goesting in de posting vibes. Maar nu zijn we terug op 'weg' en laten we jullie graag nog zien welke plekjes we tussen toen en nu nog bezocht hebben. Na de ijsklimstage trokken we terug naar de zon, en we vonden er nog wat rotsen bij. Oltre ligure, Italië kon onze wensen voldoen op beide vlakken. 🇬🇧 The forced pause in our travel plans also drifted to a lower instaposting vibe. But, we are back on the 'road' and ready to show you what we were up to in between then and now. After the ice climbing course, we opted for some sun and found some extra rock as well. Oltre ligure, Italy delivered on both ends!
Sometimes your plans get thwarted by life.. and a stupid rock that's playing hide and seek. 🤷♂️ #HideOutside 🇱🇺 Dus, jullie hebben misschien al gemerkt dat we were van de Instagram trein zijn gesprongen. Dit keer hebben we wel een excuus 😅. Jeroen raakte geblesseerd op onze eerste poederdag. Blijkbaar zijn de skigoden niet onze grootste fans 🧐. Het volledige verhaal passeert nog wel, maar de korte versie is dat hij een spierscheur heeft in zijn kuit én het was iets te serieus om in de van te liggen hangen bij -10°C temperaturen. Dus we zijn weer thuis voor een korte periode zodat Jeroen zo veel mogelijk kine beurten kan doen. Hopelijk kunnen we er na volgende week weer tegen aan! 🇬🇧 Sooo, you might have noticed we've been of the instagram train again. This time we've had an excuse though 😅. Jeroen got injured on the first powder snow day we had. Guess the ski gods just don't like us very much 🧐. Full story to follow, but short version was that he ripped part of his calf and it was just a bit too serious to stay huddling in the van at the -10°C temps. So, we are home for a short period, while Jeroen takes as many kine sessions as possible. Hopefully we can still get back to it next week!
Day 5: Jeroen killing it on Valmiana (3+) #HideOutside 🇱🇺 Met deze waterval werd het beoogde niveau van de cursus mooi behaald. Op naar die zelfstandige tochten💪. Fun fact: Het plan was om hier een stop motion filmpje van te maken, maar ik kon er niks van 😅. Toch vonden we dewe foto te mooi om niet te delen. 🇬🇧 The proposed level of the week was reached with this beautiful ice climb. On to those independent climbs💪. Fun fact: The plan was to make a stop motion movie of this climb, but I sucked at it 😅. Still, we loved this photo too much not to share it.
Day 2 and 3: Getting into the movements by great example of our intructor Dries Ampe #HideOutside 👉 Swiping again for more ❄ 🇱🇺 We namen deel aan een ijsklimcursus aangeboden door @bacantwerpen via de Belgische bergsportfederatie. Het doel van deze cursus om op het einde van de week zelfstandig aan de slag te kunnen gaan op watervallen van graad 3. Een dikke merci aan onze instructor Dries ☝voor het geduld, het enthousiasme en het scherpe oog op de juiste techniek en de nodige veiligheid. Deze cursus ging door in Cogne, Italië. Zoals jullie kunnen zien is dit een paradijs voor ijsklimmers. Wanneer je door de valleien loopt is het watervallen spotten langs alle kanten én ijsklimmers spotten langs alle kanten. 📷 De eerste twee foto's zijn van dag 2 'Il sentiero del troll (grade 3)', de laatste 2 van dag 3 'Cascades de lillaz (grade 3/4)'. 🇬🇧 We took an ice climbing course from @klimenbergsportfederatie The goal of this week is to be able to go out by yourself in a safe manner and tackle grade 3 cascades. A big thank you to our instructor Dries☝for the patience, enthusiasm and the keen eye on technique and safety during our flailings. The course was held in Cogne, Italy. As you can see this place can be called an icefall paradise. When walking through the valleys there's frozen cascades left and right ánd ice climbers left and right. 📷 First two shots are from 'Il sentiero del troll (grade 3)'. The elaborate setup was the clear winner in our stories poll a few days ago. #HideOutside 92% elaborate setup 🚀 8% ground setup 📸 Now we know what we will spend our time with at crags in the future 😅. In all seriousness we will probably continue with a little bit of both, but we will try to hang the camera more often! This was a Siurana shot by the way (another famous rock 🤘 spot in #catalunya). One of the few shots we made here, because the climbing felt much harder for the both of us. When that happens we tend to get a little more down.. Which is stupid, because it's not about the grade, it's about the fun on the route 🙄. Okay, I know this is a much more fun, healthy and even realistic way to look at climbing! Every place is different and there's pros and cons in all of them. But when you come from fiddling around on 7a in Margalef to not being able to properly climb a 6a/b in Siurana it just kicks you in the 🌰🌰. Frustration anyone? Yes, this is apparatly how my competitive mind works. Wooptidoo! 😅

Our van. XXS size. Big adventures. #Hideoutside The never truly answered question. Is bigger really better? At the moment we're still very happy with our tiny van choice. Of course there are always drawbacks to any choice, but you wouldn't believe how much stuff we have with us during this winter season trip. With this second conversion we did make a true effort to make almost every storage space fit the stuff that was meant to go inside. This will be the norm form now on because it makes all the difference in the world! We are planning to show you the inside of the van as well, but we will first need to make some proper inside pictures. With these short days we're either outside playing or huddling inside against the cold nights 🤷♀️.

So happy we both got to do these ones with one onsight for Britt and two back to back onsights for Jeroen 👌. Oh yeah and if you didn't know yet. Margalef is the paradise of pockets. Margalef. World class. Beginner friendly. Just stunning. There are so much climbing options in Margalef that we had a hard time choosing the crags we wanted to visit and revisit. During a total 10 climbing days we only managed a small portion of everything this place has to offer. According to the international standards we are intermediate/ slightly advabced climbers 🤓, which means we climb mostly around 6c (5.11a) and try to get into the 7a (5.11d) range. With Margalef being a playground for legends of the sport, we were a bit anxious to find routes that fit our skillset. Amazingly we found a lot of interesting sectors of we were prepared to warm up a bit on the ground. For those of you interested in the beginner to intermediate routes this beautiful place has to offer. Packing. Stress. Driving. Relax. 😎 To get going is always a feat for us. This time we managed to be packing on and off for over a week before we finally hit the road. The general direction was already decided: Spain here we come 🇪🇸. We had somewhat decided on Siurana for our first stop. Naturally, on the morning of our waking in the area we changed our minds 😅. The area around Margalef was the first thing we got to explore when driving into the valley. We were told the climbing is great. But man, we didn't expect to be driving in such wonderful terrain so soon. El Parc Natural de la Sierra de Montsant is recommended for hiking, climbing and biking alike. We felt at home right away!

The Channel Islands off the cost of CA (LA/Ventura/Santa Barbara Counties) is a pretty magical place. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary closer to Ventura was designated a National Park in 1980 and includes amazing snorkeling, kayaking and hikes.
