Another retired scout file of a very well filmed building in Vancouver. ALSCO has been a landmark in Mount Pleasant for some years. The beautiful brick warehouse was originally built in 1910 for Dominion Steam Laundry. It would go on to house about 8 different laundry companies with Alsco being the last tenant to move in around the 1950’s. ALSCO today is among the world’s biggest commercial uniform & linens laundry operators and developed many of the industries standards. They recently built a new state of the art facility in Surrey and vacated their aging facility in Vancouver last year. The ALSCO building on West 4th was particularly popular with film because of its large scale brick (brownstone) exterior which is a common look for many American cities and not very common in Vancouver (we prefer to build with wood). Hopefully the entire building will be retrofitted into a stylish new office building. I’ve worked in fashion for FAR too long to remember and at present i’m still the designer/owner of my 25+ year jewelry design biz @zukaart (albeit part-time now as I’m on a new journey as an actor) but hearing there were 8000+ people waiting in line to hit this “pop up” on Granville street in downtown Vancouver is so disheartening. Fast Fashion is truly choking us globally. For context…please check out the documentary about the store Brandy Melville. “Brandy Hellville and the cult of fast fashion” to understand more. (We also still have a store on Granville street that has lineups every weekend!!!!!!! WHY?!) Years ago I discovered H&M & Zara in Denmark. I understand the pull to have fun fashion-forward pieces at affordable prices. I’ve been guilty of picking up pieces that are on sale. (Luckily, so far anything I bought in the past from these places has held up but that might not be the case going forward) I’ve pivoted more to shopping less and buying quality. Sparingly. And for my new acting journey, I need audition pieces…so thrifting is where it’s at. Just think twice before purchasing. Is it a need or a want. Will it stand the test of time? I know Shein is super cheap but the clothes are not made well. At least that’s my experience. Usually they end up in landfills or at thrift stores!
