Earlier this month I attended an Intro to Playwriting course with the International Women Writers Guild to brush up on my knowledge and one of my assignments (besides writing of course) was to listen to an episode from the podcast "The Subtext," where Brian James Polak interviews different playwrights (I managed to get a hold of the episode with an interview with "Fat Ham"'s James Ijames). How the heck I've gone all of my career so far without knowing that there's a whole collection of podcasts with the American Theatre catalog (including "American Theatre Off Script" and "Theatrical Mustang"), I don't know. Now I have to listen to every single one just for the sake of my education. Another one that I've included is the shorter "Remembering John Aielli," examining the life of late Austin radio host John Aielli and his eclectic taste in music. I have my mom to thank for putting this on my radar, because I'm sure John and I would have been great friends since it turns out we listen to some of the same artists 😆. Sometimes my work takes a long time to germinate, and then I look back on a thing and try to see the circuitous road map of the process. It was a year ago that I finished a residency @joshuatreenps where I was thinking about the cycles of sounds there, campers and birds and rocks and garbage collection and tiny cholla spine sounds. Along the way I saw my first ocotillo (and quails!) and I also got my first online death threat/troll from a local. Regrouped. Met a lot of other local allies and artsy weirdos. I sketched some music for Perc Ens (@micjohmck @lukewac @jarman457 ) where later we got to play these incredible 6000 year old stone lithophones at @tanksounds that year.
