🚨 Health Alert: Cryptosporidium Outbreak in Devon Area 🚨 ⚠️Attention all carers and clients, We want to inform you about a recent outbreak of Cryptosporidium in the Devon area. This microscopic parasite can cause cryptosporidiosis, a highly infectious illness that leads to unpleasant diarrhoea and vomiting for several weeks. Here’s what you need to know: 🔬 **What is Cryptosporidium?** Cryptosporidium is a parasite commonly found in the guts of wild and domesticated animals. It can contaminate reservoirs and rivers, potentially affecting our water supply. 🤒 **Symptoms:** - Diarrhoea and vomiting - Dehydration and weight loss - Severe cases may require hospital care 👶 **At-Risk Groups:** - Children under 5 - Individuals with weak immune systems 🚫 **No Specific Treatment:** There is no specific treatment for the parasite itself. Infected individuals should drink plenty of fluids and consult a pharmacist about oral rehydration sachets to replace lost sugar, salts, and minerals. 💧 **Water Safety Advisory:** To avoid contamination: - Boil all tap water before drinking or using it for cooking - Do not drink unboiled tap water - Cryptosporidium is resistant to chlorine and difficult to filter out due to its small size. 🧼 **Preventive Measures:** - Wash hands with soap after using the toilet or changing nappies, and before eating - Wash bedding and towels on the hottest possible cycle - Do not prepare food for others until you have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours - Avoid returning to work or school until two days after symptoms stop Please stay vigilant and follow these guidelines to help prevent the spread of this illness. Today, Dr. Flanders was the first in the country to use a new coil designed by Boston Scientific to treat a PAVM (pulmonary arteriovenous malformation). PAVMs are abnormal communications between the pulmonary artery and vein. These are commonly found in patients with the genetic condition HHT (Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia).
