Had the pleasure of buying Woodford Reserve whiskey. Looks great on the shelf. The front taste was superb. Sweet, sugary notes with oak made this a fantastic first sip before the burn. The burn wasn’t ethanol, but was still sharp nonetheless (to be expected for 90.4 proof). The end note is what got me, the burnt sugar notes turning into an almost black licorice flavor when combined with the other notes of wood, which is unenjoyable for me personally. Then the finish once more turns into a sweet, subtly woody note. Not too bad overall. Whiskey of the Week - Old Forester - through Tuesday. In 1870, George Garvin Brown revolutionized the whiskey industry by sealing Bourbon in a glass bottle for the first time. Five generations and nearly 150 years later, Old Forester has introduced the first Kentucky Straight Rye Whisky. A historic recipe, acquired in 1940 by Owsley Brown I, Old Forester Rye features a mash bill of 65% Rye, 20% Malted Barley, and 15% Corn. Such a high proportion of barley allows for a fully natural fermentation process, forgoing the need for artificial enzymes commonly found in high rye mash bills. Additionally, a generous percentage of malt yields a unique floral character, balancing the sharp, brisk spice of the rye grain. Continuing its legacy of quality and consistency, Old Forester uses its own proprietary yeast strain, produces every barrel, and distills every drop. At 100 proof, Old Forester Rye plays beautifully in a cocktail but also stands up boldly on its own. The extra spice from rye as compared to bourbon can sometimes be a bit much, but not surprisingly the folks at Old Forester have put together a really nice new product. Yes, I never buy bourbon, but I still try to be open minded and taste anything whisk(e)y, at least once. Eagle Rare is another bourbon I hadn’t tried before, so I asked my mate @mariusveremia for a sample. He sent it in the original bottle - and quite a good looking bottle it is. Nose: maple syrup, cinnamon, liquorice, dry cherries, ginger, marzipan, chocolate, sour cherries, cocoa milk, cloves, allspice, a bit of chilli. Taste: bitter cherries, tobacco, marzipan, ginger, cloves, radishes, red wine, cinnamon, burnt sugar, vanilla, coconut. Finish: red wine, ginger, chocolate, same ol’ marzipan. That’s probably the note that I find most off-putting in bourbons. But I still like it better than Woodford Reserve (the only other bourbon I currently have on my shelf), I guess I like the chocolate and cherry notes. As for the beer, I haven’t tried to write down tasting notes. When there are so many (heavy flavoured) actual ingredients, there’s little point in trying to find other hidden notes. 😅 Delicious beer, anyway. Buffalo Trace Eagle Rare 10 Years Old. Introducing the Master’s Collection - Five-Malt Stouted Mash. A rich and darkly robust expression of Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey. In the 1830’s, the Woodford County distillery was the setting for a series of discoveries and innovative practices that today define the bourbon industry. For this Master’s Collection release, Master Distiller's Chris Morris and Elizabeth McCall have drawn upon that rich history and their own interests for inspiration. In Kentucky, a fermented grain mash is traditionally called “distiller’s beer”. Distillation converts this “beer” into a spirit that will become a “Whiskey” once barrelled. The Master’s Collection is a take on crafting a spirit that exhibits the flavours of a classic beer style, in this case a rich, roasted malty stout. Enjoy the aromas of roasted malt and toasted nuts, sweetened with hints of milk chocolate and brightened with a touch of orange zest, spearmint and warm baking spices.
