Archie Rose Rye Chocolate Malt Single malt whisky. 52% ABV/104 proof Distillery: Archie Rose Distillery, Rosebery, Australia Price: Can't recall (700ml bottle) Age: NAS Chill filtered: No Bottled: June 2019 Limited edition: 1148 bottles Maturation: Australian re-shaved, toasted and charred Apera (Sherry) casks Body: Burnt umber Nose: Rose, pecan, ginger Palate: chocolate, hazlenut Finish: I remember the exact moment that Archie Rose's Chocolate Rye Malt went on sale because it was 11am midweek and I had a one hour meeting in the calendar. By the time the meeting was over the whisky had sold out and, given it was one that I'd really wanted to try, it immediately went on the unicorn whisky shortlist. During covid when everyone was locked down and had more disposable income as a result I managed to purchase a bottle via auction in 2021 for $270-$330 (can't quite recall) when the initial RRP was about $140. It sat in the cupboard for some time before finally getting cracked late last year. So to say I'm excited to finally review this whisky is putting it mildly. The nose is initially quite floral, with soft rose quickly being overtaken by pecan and a zestier candied ginger behind. The palette is a lovely dark chocolate note underscored by hazlenut. The finish is long and lingering and where the rye comes through. Mocha gives way to baking spices and a dark chocolate note. Am I biased due to this being a unicorn whisky? Probably. Is this still a cracking whisky? Absolutely. Using heavily roasted malt in a rye whisky all but renders the cask profile useless, and in this case it's a good thing. Archie Rose Rye Chocolate Malt is unique, engaging and a lot of fun to explore. If you ever see this by the dram then buy it without a second thought, if you see it by the bottle please buy it on my behalf. These are blended malt whiskies, it seems: all made from 3 French single malts, 100% malted barley, 3 regions and 3 different still types. Peated and unpeated, different cask finishes, all bottled at 43% abv. From what I remember, the 2 in the middle (100% peated and Grand Cru finish) were the decent ones, whereas the Calvados finish and the “Prune” (plum) finish were pretty much “țuică” (you know, palinka, rakija, slivovitz, etc. - the Balkan traditional plum brandy). Introducing the 2024 Cask Strength release from @raasaydistillery . Since 2017 Raasay Distillery has gone from strength to strength. Using three main cask types Bordeux Red Wine cask, first fill ex Rye Whiskey casks, and Virgin Chinkapin oak with both peated and unpeated spirit, the signature Raasay style was created. A beautifully balanced single malt that showcases a traditional "Highland Hebridean" style of whisky. Fast forward to 2024 and we have the highly anticipated 2024 Cask Strength release. The same recipe has been used as their core release with the exception being that this has been bottled at a cask strength of 61.3%. 8400 bottles were produced globally with only 1100 going to UK trade. -Bimber London Single Malt- / Germany Edition Mijn favoriete distillery 🦅…. Bimber heeft nogal wat meegemaakt het afgelopen half jaar. De Master Distiller en tevens oprichter van de distilleerderij is opgepakt, omdat hij wordt verdacht van Moord en Drugs smokkel in zijn vorige leven. Hij zit nu vast in Polen waar hij in voorarrest zijn rechtszaak afwacht. Eerlijk gezegd ziet het er niet goed uit voor hem, maar Bimber heeft een statement naar buiten gebracht wat zegt dat ze vol gedrevenheid en passie door zullen gaan. Deze specifieke fles is uitgebracht voor al deze ellende. Speciaal voor Duitsland op de markt gebracht in 2020 is deze Ex-Bourbon Single Cask. Met een abv van maar liefst 59,2% is dit een echte in je face whisky die je niet zomaar op een zaterdagavond op tafel zet tijdens een potje Triominos 😁. Fruitig, kruidig, vanille en lange finish. Hier moet je echt even voor gaan zitten.

Bowmore 1997 25 years - SV - Cask 2422 🇫🇷 Voila un Bowmore qui a avait fait parler de lui, pour son prix excessif (👋🏻coucou Warren) et pour la tres bonne note attribuée par Serge Il s'agit d'un single cask de Bowmore embouteillé brut de fut (55,9° - propre) et ayant vieilli dans un Olorosso Sherry butt pendant 25 ans. Sur le papier, ca sonne plutot bien. Au 👃, on est belle et bien sur la terrasse de la distillerie, face a la mer, avec des embrunts marins pleins les narines. Les algues laissent la place aux fruits exotiques En 👄, l'ntegration est parfaite malgré un joli 55,9° au compteur. Du kick juste ce qu'il faut pour donner un beau relief, une texture ronde et huileuse, du miel, une belle tourbe saline et nos fruits qui amenent une belle gourmandise. Franchement tres bon ce Bowmore. Not much information except exclusive bottling for All Nippon Airways. Although this distillery today is not as highly regarded, still good reference on how they made things in the 1960s when they did their own maltings in-house, and at a well aged 25 years too. . . .

Douglas Laing's got a new kid on the block! Meet Strathearn. Back in October 2019, famed independent bottler Douglas Laing had made a move to purchase the Perthshire microdistillery that was Strathearn. Now, Douglas Laing is ready for Strathearn to make its debut! The new Strathearn Single Malt has been bottled from 32 casks that were a combination of ex-Bourbon, virgin and ex-Sherry casks. These casks were a mixture of those acquired as part of the purchase by Douglas Laing, as well as casks that were filled under Douglas Laing's ownership. The microdistillery is lauded as being operated without automation under the watch of lead distiller Angela Brown, and also featuring an incredibly long fermentation time of 144 hours (or 6 days) in order to create Strathearn's signature fruity character. Spirit cuts were human made solely through taste and smell, with only one barrel filled per day. Adding to its craft, only Maris Otter malt is used, which is said to give the whisky a creamy and malty flavour. The inaugural expression is bottled at 50% ABV. Strathearn Single Malt is available for US$106 across major online retailers and bottle shop in UK and Europe. It will be further rolled out to Asia, US and Canada from mid-May 2024. Neck Pour Perspective Kilkerran 8yo Cask Strength Bourbon 55.8% batch 8 100% ex-bourbon non-chillfiltered natural colour. This has been on the shelf for a while as I had another iteration open already but needing a sample for a fellow whisky fan it was time to open her up and on first contact I’m very glad I did. The nose is smoked mackerel. That’s it at first, I can’t think past it but it’s good. Maybe with some lemon squeezed on top. Palate is hot smoked ham, seaweed, apples, oily, some sweet vanilla cake and a medium longfinish. Very enjoyable first impression especially with some water. To celebrate the 135th anniversary of Mitchell and Son being in business, they created a special edition of their spot whiskey: Gold Spot. It was matured for at least nine years in Bourbon Barrels, Sherry Butts, Bordeaux Wine Casks and Port Pipes. It's non chill filtered and bottled at 51.4% ABV for a complex and full flavoured experience. Meanwhile, the new Gold Spot Whiskey is called the "Generations Edition", and it's a bit different to the 9 year old version. For starters, this one comes in at 13 years old, and instead of being at 51.4% ABV like the first Gold Spot, this one comes in at 46% ABV. Like many Spot Whiskeys, it was aged in Bourbon and Sherry casks, initially, but then it was finished for 16 months in Reciota Della Valpollicella wine casks. Review #280 - SMWS 78.49 'I Hope You Like Jamming Too!' - Ben Nevis 12 Year Our first Ben Nevis review, and it's from an independent bottler - this distillery isn't too easy to find in OB form. In addition to the fact that there's only one semi-regularly available OB option (a 10 year old, which isn't available in our area), a lot of this distillery's product is shipped overseas, to Japan, for use in Nikka's blended whiskies. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottled this single cask at 12 years old, and it's still at a whopping strength of 64.4% ABV. The cask selection was a first fill ex-bourbon barrel, relatively straightforward - hopefully, that leaves more of the distillate character intact. If we can find that character, it's rumored to contain themes of industrial funk, oily texture, and the occasional hint of smoke. Nose: Quite a wide range of scents across our tastings: sweeter perfume and wood sugars, brown sugar and clove add a baking element; there's a slight funk in here, like mushrooms and unusual umami notes. Hints of nutty character, with malt and chocolate later Palate: Juicy, quite oaky, with lots of perfume and vanilla to start. There is a nice weighty character to the spirit, and some mineral and metallic notes arrive in the mid-palate. Hints of fruits like blueberry and blackberry appeared occasionally, and there's some dusty chocolate. Tropical fruits and cream arrived with air time Finish: Sweet oak and vanilla, lots of perfume, and sweetness from brown sugar, pineapple, and cardamom. Once in a while, a little bit of mango or stronger brown spice came forward Final Note: Among the many tasting notes we found across our different tastings with this whisky, a few main themes eventually came forward: strong oak, perfume, vanilla, and that spirity heat. What is this Single Blend all about? What does it mean? Well, this is Bridgeland's flagship bend. It's a blend of rye, single malt and Taber corn whiskies. Each whisky was distilled, barrelled and aged separately and blended to produce this expression. Bottled at an easy 44.1% abv. If you love a good rye whisky, this is for you! The rye notes are very forward on the nose and palate and is well supported by the malted barely and corn components. What you get is an aromatic, sweet and smooth, easy sipper. I also picked up a nice dark chocolate note that was a nice surprise and added another layer to this whisky. As we were watching tv last night (which is a rare occasion for the Mrs and I, with two little ones) and sipping on this dram, we both quite enjoyed it. It was light, but full of flavour. It was definitely a hit for the both of us. If you get a chance to pick this up, I’d highly recommend it. Cheers everyone! It remained close for a while, but in the end it was Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel finishing with the popular vote in the weekly Sunday Showdown. Elmer T. Lee was the long-term Master Distiller turned Master Distiller Emeritus at what is now known as the Buffalo Trace Distillery. He is perhaps most famous for his invention of the world’s first single-barrel bourbon, Blanton’s Single Barrel. His accolades within the industry include his induction into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in 2001; Lifetime Achievement Award from Whisky Advocate Magazine in 2002; Lifetime Achievement Award and Hall of Fame induction from Whisky Magazine in 2012. This bottle is difficult, if not impossible to find on shelves and allocations are often held until end of year distributions. The most common sentiment that I have heard regarding ETL is that is is the best $30 bourbon that you can buy for $200. HSE doesn't distill (anymore - their rums are produced at Distillerie du Simon), but focuses instead on aging and blending operations. Their distillery last operated in 1990, and the ruins of their still, cane crusher, and boiler are still on site. Most of their rums are aged in new American oak from ISC (I saw barrels from their Missouri and Alabama cooperages) as well as some new French oak. Many of their rums are then finished in a variety of casks (ex-wine, Kilchoman whisky, sherry, Port, etc). They said they only use their casks twice, then they sell them. We asked our Brand Ambassador @gordondallas1 what is behind the success of this stunning whisky. ‘Every whisky in this bottle, has to be at least 18 years of age. That’s a long time in oak casks, so you start to get a bit of oiliness, a fuller body and bigger mouthfeel. There is a gentle warming spice but also some wonderful tropical notes from the oak wood. This is an incredibly balanced Scotch whisky and a beautiful example of the Isle of Skye style. The Last Drop 2024 collection. The independent bottler The Last Drop Distillers presents its annual collection, release no. 34, 35, and 36, featuring long-aged spirits. Alongside “Infinitum Rum Blend,” there are two single malts from the 2024 collection: Release No. 34 is a 40-year-old Auchentoshan, filled into 74 bottles at 44.8% ABV. According to Last Drop Distillers, it has a “surprising sweetness” with notes of fruitcake, apple compote, black cherry, and a spicy oak finish. Release No. 36 is the oldest single malt release from The Last Drop Distillers to date. The Tomintoul Distillery was less than five years old when the single malt was filled into the cask. After maturing for the last 20 months in an amoroso Sherry butt cask, it was bottled at 41.8% ABV. Tomintoul 55 Years Old reveals dark fruits and raisins on the nose, spices and herbs on the palate, and a long, lingering finish. Only 582 bottles are available.
