На втором плане ощущаются ириски, специи типа карри, легкие фруктовые и травянистые ноты. Но и градус ощущается сполна. Молодой виски. На вкус резкий. Малоприятная дымная горечь со сливочно-ванильными оттенками. Чувствуется некоторое влияние горько-сладкого вкуса стаута. Дым вскоре развеивается, и становятся различимы тропические фрукты. Мне напоминает вкус апельсинового печения. Но всё равно это просто и водянисто. Финиш сливочно-дымный, быстро затухающий. Мне этот виски показался средненьким. При очень хороших характеристиках он всё равно проседает в общем качестве. Слышал мнение, что Smoke & Mirrors - это «убийца Ardbeg». Ну знаете ли! Те, кто говорит, что это убийца Ardbeg, по всей видимости, просто не пробовали Ardbeg. 78 / 100

Whitlaw, the name given to this Highland Park, is a nod to the Viking gods who prefer not to have their prestigious brand used. However, in today’s world, this seems irrelevant and I wish distilleries would realise that. Even if it were called Macallan, it wouldn’t make a difference. What truly matters is the taste, the experience, and the value - something that the modern-day Edrington seems to have difficulty grasping. Bottle info Highland Park (Whitlaw) Distilled June 2013 Bottled February 2024 (10yo) 1st fill PX and 2nd fill Oloroso casks 46% Expect to pay around £50 On the nose: red apples, crispy bacon, basil, strawberry fudge. Glazed cherries, very flat with the wood quashing the character. Water unlocks orange zest, melon and caramel. In the mouth: middling sherry, it’s odd. Figs, tobacco, earthy and wet bark. Water reveals coal, sooty, nutty and the PX coming through strongly. My thoughts Highland Park is usually dependable. I can’t help but question if the name change was necessary due to subpar casks. Signatory, on the other hand, fails again. Maybe the quality of casks has declined over time, affecting the blending process. A bad run of form continues. Score: 3/10

@fibwhisky very kindly sent out samples of their latest two part release - Before & After Series II. They have taken a single 25 year old Ex bourbon hogshead cask from Girvan Distillery and bottled half while the remaining half was finished off for an additional 9 months in a PX hogshead from Caol Ila! First up, the 25 year old. The big take away from this one is just how buttery and creamy it is, particularly on the finish. Vanilla custard, shortbread and a little fruitiness with cereal notes. Medium bodied and a slightly oily mouthfeel. Comparing that to the second, wow, I was not prepared for quite such a change. That additional 9 months, just an extra 3% maturation time, has transformed this Girvan. Slightly highly ABV (46.8% vs 45.0%) this offers up a peaty, but also sweet, smoke and cereal hit on the nose before taking you on a bit of a journey taste wise - The impact of that PX evident. Still creamy and oily but with black pepper and a little sea salt riding over the somewhat sweeter fruity side which then comes to the fore before lingering at the finish. I really like the idea behind the Before & After Series, it feels like a good teaching experience from Fib on how impactful a finishing maturation can be. Having opened the Bourbon expression yesterday it’s time for a comparison before I pit them both against the OG 8 yr old CS tomorrow. On first contact the nose once again is smoked mackerel but also motor oil, wood spice fudge and faint struck match just at the end. FORTY CREEK We talked about what influences you to buy a bottle of whiskey on @saturday_night_whiskey_live a couple of weeks back and we chatted briefly about this one. Price is definitely a big factor. This is a bottle I had never heard of before and not knowing much about Canadian whiskey it caught my eye in duty free in Dulles airport. What caught my eye more was the price though. This is Forty Creek, Barrel Select, Niagara Whisky. Bottled at 40% and states that it has won a few awards. This is a Litre bottle and the price was…. $15! This works out at £11.80 for a litre or the equivalent in 70cl of £8.26. Crazy! I haven’t tried it yet and I am not expecting much but for me it was definitely worth a punt at this price. Teo tastings in one day. Yesterday was a heavy one. Thanks to @naomi.laurie me and my mate had at the Duke of Tokyo in Amsterdam. Here we got to try several awesome @nikkawhiskyeu whiskies as well as their gin and vodka. (Coffey malt, Miyagikyo and the Yoichi) All stuff id never had before. An epic afternoon. The highlight there were two unreleased nikkas: bourbon &rye cask and an Irish cask that was distilled on stainless steel stills. But it didnt end there for me as there was an @remycointreau tasting with 3 Remy Martin Cognacs waiting at home. Also great stuff! No more alcohol for me though the next few days...
