Price is definitely a big factor. This is a bottle I had never heard of before and not knowing much about Canadian whiskey it caught my eye in duty free in Dulles airport. What caught my eye more was the price though. This is Forty Creek, Barrel Select, Niagara Whisky. Bottled at 40% and states that it has won a few awards. This is a Litre bottle and the price was…. $15! This works out at £11.80 for a litre or the equivalent in 70cl of £8.26. Crazy! I haven’t tried it yet and I am not expecting much but for me it was definitely worth a punt at this price. 𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙃𝙀𝙇𝙇. • 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙡 🔥🔥🔥 The original Dublin Liberties Distillery existed hundreds of years ago in The Liberties distilling district of Dublin.. also known as the Four Corners of Hell.. or.. Hell. 🔥 • Hell was known for destruction, debauchery and mayhem, not a place to visit after dark. Street names such as Murdering Lane and Cutthroat Lane warned of nefarious dangers lurking there.. veeery spooky. 💀🔪⚰️ • A carved oak devil stood watch over the archway to Hell and you had to pass him to enter.. but.. one night.. he disappeared.. transforming himself into whiskey barrels after being seduced by whiskey angels. • The new Dublin Liberties Distillery is not spooky and a MUST visit, there's even a cafe with yummy treats. 💜😋💜 They have an amazing Master Distiller working magic on their incredible core range, with super cool names like Murder Lane, Oak Devil, Dead Rabbit and King of Hell. • I HAD TO HAVE this whiskey. I mean, a fantastic 13 year single malt called Murder Lane? Yes, please. Glenglassaugh Sandend. The distillery is perched along the wild north Aberdeenshire coast, tucked away behind the picturesque Sandend Bay, a favourite spot for surfers. Master blender Rachel Barrie holds cherished memories of her childhood days spent at Sandend, where she even learned to surf. Glenglassaugh Sandend is a recent addition to the core line-up of the Glenglassaugh distillery. Production at the distillery resumed in 2008, and in 2016, it was acquired by the renowned Brown-Forman Co. of the United States. You might recognize Brown-Forman as the makers of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, Old Forester, and Woodford Reserve Bourbons. Additionally, they also own Glendronach and Benriach as part of their Scotch Whisky collection. The only “beach” I have neared my house is the Rhine🫣. Today, I’m enjoying a sunny day in Arnhem so why not pretend that I am at a beach drinking this nice, sweet, buttery, vanilla ice cream whisky with hints of caramel and pineapple. Bardot Whisky Days day 2. Trying to write down a few tasting notes this time, at least for the first drams. Also, time to sample the more special (and expensive) drams the festival has to offer. Keeping in mind that we’re in Romania, a still “infant” single malt market, where importers can merely scratch the surface of “connoisseur” whisky. I started with a Balvenie 25. I’ve had one before, but it was the Triple Cask 25, matured at a “whopping” 40% abv - what a disappointment that was (good notes, but basically drowned in water). This is more of a real deal, it’s a single cask, bottled at 47.8% abv - maybe even cask strength? Let me check. No, I don’t think so, all editions are bottled at the same exact abv. Yeah, this one’s nice. Nose: barley sugar, butter biscuits and a bit of salty crackers, red apples, leather, nectarines, walnuts and a hint of pencil shavings. Taste: nice, oily, with that good old whisky notes; tobacco, peaches and nectarines, honey, barley apples, leather, toast, with a bit of ginger spiciness on the finish. Balvenie Single Barrel 1992 25 Years Old Traditional Oak. Notes on a sample – Laphroaig 30 year old from The Whisky Jury 90/21, 51,5%. Another lovely sample provided by @away_days321 This one knocked my socks off, or as Hecklefish would say, “Yahtzee!!!” (Sorry, I had the Why Files on while trying this). Nose: Medicinal peat, green tropical citrus, melon and lime, and a herbal note and perhaps some pears. Mellow oak, mellow spice. So nice! A peated malt note – a distillery tour kinda note. Palate: Wow! I don’t wanna take notes, I just want to experience this… Balance; sweet, fruity, spicy, peaty, oaky. Plenty of peat and surprisingly little oak for 30 years old. The sweet, spicy peat has a touch of herbal licorice to it. The fruit is like on the nose: green tropical citrus. Very nice sweet vanilla oak note. The finish is peated and just won’t quit. Last night, under the guidance of Master Distiller Jakob, I had the privilege of experiencing a masterclass tasting of Thu’s (pronounced Thuuu) core range. May 1st will mark the unveiling of their next venture—a trio of exceptional core range spirits. The lineup and core range features THY Single Malt Whisky, BOG Single Malt Whisky, and SPELT-RYE Malted Rye Whisky, each meticulously crafted with distinctive flavors and maturation techniques, offering a nice introduction and journey of Thu whisky. In addition to the core range whisky, we also drank a few single casks. The THY Single Malt Whisky was for me the best of the core range. It’s from a mix of bourbon, oloroso, and PX casks. Their is a bit of Danish beechwood smoke, a perfect balance of sweet wine flavors, warm oak spice, and vanilla. And their Nordic interpretation of a rye whisky was surprisingly good! Normally this is not my drink but their implementation of this was really a surprise for me. This Spelt-Rye was awarded gold at the World Whisky Awards 2024. Spring time, blossom time, Yamazaki time 🥃 🌸 Finally the weather is good again in Munich and, with the typical delay, a shot I took of the Yamazaki Puncheon 2010, the inaugural release! It’s matured in large 480 litre North American white oak puncheon where the smaller spirit-to-wood ratio allows a slower rate of maturation for this single malt Japanese whisky from Yamazaki distillery. Normally when we say puncheon we mean sherry puncheon, this is done with American oak, is this an ex-bourbon puncheon? Virgin American oak puncheon? Mystery… 🕵️ It was “limited” to 11000 bottles, it’s non-chill filtered and carries an ABV of 48%! I tried this not so long ago at Sushi and Soul after a long day at a Whisky fair so please forgive my reductive notes: Color: gold N: cream, orchard fruits, vanilla and oak. A touch of coconut 🥥 🍏 🍐 🪵 P: quite malt driven, still quite sweet and a tad woody. Orchard fruits, coconut crunchy honey Müsli. Not sure it exists. 🍯 🥥 🌾 🍎 🥣 F: medium, tannic, sweet and woody, lots of malty and creamy notes. 🪵 🌾 🍯 Vote: N/A - tasting 1 CL from a bottle that was opened quite few years ago doesn’t allow me to judge this properly! Mein Limburg-Wochenende begann am Freitag mit einem richtigen schönen Pre-Event von Schlumberger, welches ich die letzten beiden Jahre leider absagen musste, nun aber endlich mal besuchen konnte. Abgesehen von tiefenentspannten Gastgebern, feinem Whisky Sour und einem leckeren Buffet war für mich im Nachhinein etwas ganz besonders spannend, wenn ich an diesen Abend zurückdenke: Der Scotch-Nerd in mir hat Schottland überhaupt nicht vermisst. Es gab so viel anderen tollen Whisky und Whiskey: Kavalan aus Taiwan, Hinch aus Irland, Blanton‘s und Heaven‘s Door aus den USA, Filey Bay aus England, Bellevoye aus Frankreich und Finch aus Deutschland waren mit ihren Brand Ambassadoren vor Ort, schenkten ordentlich aus, informierten über die Brennerei und kommende Releases und standen für spannende Unterhaltungen zur Verfügung. Einfach eine tolle Gelegenheit sich mal ganz in Ruhe unter Whisky Nerds auszutauschen. Ok, ein bisschen Scotch gab es trotzdem, denn der unabhängige Abfüller Morrison Scotch Whisky war mit Mac-Talla und Old Perth vertreten, aber die sind bei mir irgendwie fast untergegangen. Highlight des Abends war für mich ein 18 Jahre alter Heaven’s Door aus einem Wermut-Fass, aber auch die mir bisher kaum untergekommenen Filey Bay haben mich durchaus beeindruckt. Das war schön – Gerne wieder…..und bevor ich es vergesse: die Bodega Lustau war auch da und hat neun verschiedene Sherry ausgeschenkt, um uns allen mal zu zeigen, wie das Zeug eigentlich schmeckt, mit dem Whiskyfässer gerne mal vorbelegt sind. Da ich aber ja so überhaupt kein Sherry-Fan bin, hab ich diesen Stand als einzigen ausgelassen. These are blended malt whiskies, it seems: all made from 3 French single malts, 100% malted barley, 3 regions and 3 different still types. Peated and unpeated, different cask finishes, all bottled at 43% abv. From what I remember, the 2 in the middle (100% peated and Grand Cru finish) were the decent ones, whereas the Calvados finish and the “Prune” (plum) finish were pretty much “țuică” (you know, palinka, rakija, slivovitz, etc. - the Balkan traditional plum brandy). Trying to gather the very brief info available online about these whiskies (not sure if accurate): Bellevoye Triple Malt Finition Prune. French blended malt whisky, made from 3 unpeated French single malt whiskies (3yo to 8yo?). Introducing the 2024 Cask Strength release from @raasaydistillery . Since 2017 Raasay Distillery has gone from strength to strength. Using three main cask types Bordeux Red Wine cask, first fill ex Rye Whiskey casks, and Virgin Chinkapin oak with both peated and unpeated spirit, the signature Raasay style was created. A beautifully balanced single malt that showcases a traditional "Highland Hebridean" style of whisky. Fast forward to 2024 and we have the highly anticipated 2024 Cask Strength release. The same recipe has been used as their core release with the exception being that this has been bottled at a cask strength of 61.3%. 8400 bottles were produced globally with only 1100 going to UK trade. Not much information except exclusive bottling for All Nippon Airways.
