LAST DAY: Jenna Westra’s @jjennawestraa Twinchecks at @lubov_nyc Jenna Westra’s work explores the connection between photography and memory, emphasizing their shared reflective qualities. In her photographs, the transition from initial reception to eventual memory is evident, challenging traditional image boundaries. Through sequences of pictures, Westra captures the essence of human movement, combining stability and flexibility. Her art often obscures faces, adding an element of privacy while conveying shared experiences and life's mysteries. This exhibition offers a unique blend of reality and dreamlike imagery. #jennawestra #lubovgallery #artexhibition #artgallery #contemporaryart #contemporaryphotography

Eunnam Hong, the Brooklyn-based artist originally hailing from Gangwon-do, South Korea, showcases her artistic prowess through mesmerizing oil paintings that transport viewers into intimate, otherworldly, and tranquil settings that seem to emerge directly from the depths of her inner world. Hong's work leaves us with more questions than answers, intriguingly shrouded in mystery. A distinctive feature of her moody scenes is the presence of figures who, remarkably, are none other than the artist herself, adorned in intricately detailed throwback fashions and voluminous ringletted wigs. Through this transformation into perplexingly unknowable personas, Hong embarks on a profound exploration of various facets of her identity, embodying roles as an immigrant, mother, wife, and artist. Drawing inspiration from the realms of film and fashion, her cinematic compositions possess editorial quality, characterized by their demure and disciplined demeanor, sharp edges, and softened hues. Hong's art masterfully straddles the boundary between realism and photorealism, immersing viewers in enigmatic and unsettling scenes that beckon us into a parallel yet subtly distinct world. Her paintings serve as a medium for navigating the intricate space between her old and new homes, delving into the inherent unease of not quite belonging in either. Moreover, the emotional depth of her depictions, where people engage in mundane activities like tying their shoes and sipping coffee, opens the door to a multitude of interpretations, inviting us to contemplate the complex tapestry of human existence. @eunnamhong #eunnamhong #eunnamhongart #hathorvisual #brooklyn #brooklynart #brooklynartist #nyartist #newyorkart #newyorkartist #southkorea #koreanstyle #koreanart #koreanartist #lubovgallery #deboergallery #lylesandkinggallery #art #artgallery #artist #newyorkartgallery #fineart #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #contemporaryartist #fashion #painting #oilpainting #throwbackfashion

New High Museum acquisition: Eunnam Hong Korean (born Gangwon-do, South Korea; lives and works in Brooklyn) Extension Cord, 2023 Oil on linen Purchase with funds from John Auerbach Big thank you to John Auerbach for the gift of Eunnam Hong’s Extension Cord. Hong, who is a Korean-born artist based in New York who explores constructs of gender, age, social status, and personal relationships in her work which is often cinematic, telling stories and suggesting plotlines through carefully staged and framed compositions. The enigmatic narratives, or situations, she paints often refer the ambiguity of self-representation in her work which takes place in intimate, quiet, and at times disquieting settings in which the relationship between and among the figures is mysterious. Extension Cord suggests the potential entanglements of personal relationships told through the storytelling vehicle of close-cropped shoes, clothes, and cords. #eunnamhong #johnlauerbach #franciscocorreacordero #lubovgallery #highmuseumofart

Souvenirs travel with you, stored in the body as the joy or menace of memory, talismans like a keychain, napkin, rock, or lock of hair. You're leaving with it for better or worse. #EunnamHong's paintings take note of the tangible and psychological souvenirs that weigh upon the present; the haunt of a place, a marker in time, of transition, sentimentality, loss, or longing. ⏳️ Each painting is a phantom and conjures a phantom itch to know who, what, when, where, and why. It persists, just like the question of whether blondes have more fun. 'Souvenirs,' a solo exhibition by Eunnam Hong, is on view now through June 18th, at @Lubov_NYC. Signs of spring include…an entire ecosystem growing in a gallery? 🌱🍃☘️🌿 Don’t let the wide angle shots fool you — Mimi Park’s fascinating floor sculpture / installation takes up the entire gallery space at Lubov, and you have to be mindful not to step on it or trip over its wires as you traverse its perimeter. There are a lot of different art historical traditions at play here, from land art to floor sculpture and kinetic sculpture and bricolage, while also possibly gesturing toward the fragility of and necessity of caring for the environment. 📍Lubov @ 5 East Broadway, 4th floor 🗓 Through April 16, Wed-Sun 12-6 #MimiPark #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #installation #installationart #Lubov #LubovGallery #lowereastside #lowereastsidegalleries #nygallery #nycgalleries #nygalleries #nyc #thingstodoinnyc #freenycevents #freenycart #artgallery #art

Latest post, link in profile / Jobi Bicos: Figuration inside and out / Contributed by Jacob Patrick Brooks / People love to categorize stuff, however silly it sometimes seems. Despite the best efforts of post-modernist artists to remove separations among media, they have proven surprisingly resilient. If you subvert categories, new ones tend to take their place. Jobi Bicos, whose work is currently on display at Lubov on the Lower East Side, is a savvy and interesting artist not because they’re trying to destroy them outright, but because they’re straddling several at once. “Girl Looking Down,” (2021) by @zollieoo #shannoncartierlucy is filled with cinematic wonder, like a still from a movie that features a young starlet researching records to understand the identity of a different character; perhaps someone she recently met and does not really know well. Her beaded hairpins with dripping dangles of pearls (of wisdom?) remind us of the idea or answer she seeks, slowly encroaching and enveloping her mind as it comes into focus. The work is both beautiful and introspective; it is that of a thinking, intelligent, albeit puzzled woman who we would like to meet again. Loo, (based on her last name), as she was formerly called, recently had a show last September entitled “The Loo Table,” at @lubovgallery #lubovgallery in #nyc , which represents her, as well as, currently, with @massimodecarlogallery #massimodrcarlogallery , in their #hongkong space. Exhibition: SHANNON CARTER LUCY ‘The Loo Table’
@lubov_nyc September 18 – November 7, 2021 _ If you touch the brass mechanism fitted at the base of a loo table, it will fold to make itself small and storable. It’s the effort of the game that makes for a small gathering. Many hands held small cards for the trick-taking game with the cute name; Lanterloo. Wrists would bend to match the wood grain that turns at the edge of an oval. Loo: a word that lifts the tongue to the roof of the mouth and rolls off and onto a surface. Loo is the loser, the runaway, a lullaby, and a 17th-century card game. Loo is as darling as the stomach of a dog. A pallet of gray browns and murky pinks that muddle with precision. It may be as clear - as - day or as sweet as the sweet spot. Shannon Cartier Lucy’s paintings furnish a world of cutthroat silks and satins, a perfect union of macabre divinity, where pain, pleasure, self-sabotage, and self-preservation elide. The scenes arrive as passive visions and cerebral souvenirs, all shrouded in her past and present. They animate through nuance, small gestures, or blanket statements. You are describing the thing, but it will work against and around you. They are willful masters of escape. If you are waiting for the moment when the painting becomes pathological, don’t. Did you have an emo phase? We’re talking moody MySpace page and fingerless gloves— if you know, you know. 👆⁣ ⁣ If so, ‘Rawr means I love you in dinosaur,’ an exhibition on now at Lubov Gallery in NYC, might bring up some memories for you. But whether or not you like your music angsty, this exhibition will resonate with you. Curator Daisy Sanchez has facilitated a dialogue between two artists— Riley Hanson and James Gregory Atkins— to explore the significance of performing one’s identity, a performance that is particular poignant in the emo and scene subcultures. 💫⁣ ⁣ In the untitled painting by Hanson at right, a couple embrace, their kiss punctuated by the sharp presence of a snake-bite piercing. Their oversized clothes and black fringe haircuts reveal nothing about their gender identities, a fact that illustrates the potential for non-binary gender expression within the emo subculture. There’s so much performance here, from the painted black nails to the piercing of skin, but the viewer is denied access to the figures’ identities. Hanson paints them in pixelated purple-ish hues that recall early photo filters, making it even harder for us to identify and pass judgement upon them.👩‍🎤⁣ ⁣ In a series of gleaming digital photographs, Atkinson explores the window to the soul— the eyes. But the eyeball captured in ‘Hypersensitive (Blowing Things Out of Proportion) III’ seems to have its curtains drawn; a pink heart-shaped contact lens prevents the viewer from truly seeing the figure. We are stopped short before an accessory often worn by individuals eager to concoct their identities outside of the gender binary. Famous goth Marilyn Manson popularized costume lenses, and they have since been adopted by fans of anime, for whom oversized lenses augment one’s performance of doe-eyed femininity. 👀⁣ ⁣ ‘Rawr’ has a strong message: the performance of identity is both a canvas and a shield. Hanson and Atkinson depict individuals who construct their appearance to help them embody their true selves. In doing so, they also erect a barrier between themselves and the judgmental viewer. Their identities are none of our business. 🙌

Are you tired of traditional exhibitions? Then we have something special for you. A New York-based artist, ceramicist and choreographer, @phoebeberglund, is happy to present you her brand-new 2-in-1 show. Why 2-in-one? It combines sculptures as well as dances, so it’s difficult to determine whether it’s an installation or a performance. Perhaps both. In general, Berglund quite often uses choreographic methods to create situations, that consider relationships between object and subject, animal and human, as well as human and machine. And this show is not an exception. As for the works presented, among them are new pieces by the artist, some of which were created in collaboration with Arkadiy Ryabin. This show runs under the title “Phoebe Berglund: Great Expectations” at @lubov_nyc in New York and it will be on view until June 16. Our team has tried hard to find biographical facts about this young and gifted artist. The results of our research you can check on PRABOOK.COM. Please, read and share your thoughts with us. Your opinion is important to us.

Laboriously inserted within standard ceiling tiles, an extensive field of human hair appear hanging down from a lowered ceiling in an anonymous office-like room somewhere in Manhattan. . . Such an impactful and disturbing, albeit succint and deeply layered in meanings, visual epiphany. . This powerful work is realized by artist @miradayal, who I had the chance to meet in her studio while in residence at @art_in_general last summer, and is on view until Sunday, March 3rd at @lubov_nyc. . Just, don't miss this impressive show. . #miradayal #lubov #lubovgallery #ceilingtiles #ceiling #hair #contemporaryart #epiphany #visualepiphany

Sarah Tortora (@tortora_studio) is one of the latest artists featured in Guest Curators, a new program where contemporary art practitioners highlight artists on Foundwork. Tortora was chosen by Francisco Correa Cordero, Founder and Director of Lubov Gallery, New York (@lubov_nyc). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Correa Cordero remarks that "Sarah Tortora re-imagines the language of architecture, monuments and memorials to break down their symbolism for the viewer to put back together and reconstruct in their own terms. Flags, banners, allusions to horses and other containers of history and meaning are common subjects examined and dissected in Tortora’s sculptures. The works become playful reconfigurations that attempt to unearth deeper meaning about what they represent, and uncover how the way they are displayed plays a vital role in how they can be interpreted." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sarah Tortora was born in 1988 in New Haven, Connecticut, where she current lives and works. Tortora earned her MFA in 2013 from the University of Pennsylvania, and her BS in Studio Art in 2011 from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. You can learn more more about Tortora and see more innovative sculpture in different media on her Foundwork profile. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Artwork Images (in order of display): ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Atlas" (2017). Plywood, wood composites, acrylic & latex paint. 62 x 43 x 42 in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Rapunzel” (2018). Interesting piece about what it means to be a curator in today’s art world by Alina Cohen at Artsy. Includes a quote by Francisco Correa Cordero, founder and director of Lubov Gallery, New York (@lubov_nyc) and one of our latest Guest Curators on Foundwork (@foundwork.art). Thanks @alinacohen @artsy for the thoughtful article and mention! #foundworkart #foundworkguestcurators #franciscocorreacordero #lubovgallery
