It’s been 5 years to the day since we lost Charlie Maultsby. You guys knew him as the owner of the Mad Monk and Red Dog’s; I knew him as my best friend, my mentor, my guru and my wing man. I met him at the Monk my first week in Wilmington fresh out of Harvard; he would always get a kick out of this newly minted cardiologist who could run his sound board. My first gig working at the Monk was this unknown band out of Charlottesville weirdly named The Dave Matthews Band (original set list included here)…Charlie loved them; I told him they sucked and would go nowhere (shows you how much Charlie knew and how little I knew about music! Then again, I could read an EKG better than he could🤣) We would vacation at Isle of Palms every year; celebrate his birthday at Freddie’s every year. On those long drives with just the two of us he would tell wild tales of backstage at the Monk and the rockstar secrets he was taking to his grave; it was one more thing we had in common. He was charming, brilliant, engaging and most of all he was my brother. Many will come and go; there will never be another Charlie Maultsby. Rest in power brother.
