1st Movie of My Spring Spooktacular Mini-Marathon: I haven't watched much horror in a while and I have nine horror movies, all with fairly short runtimes (a staple of horror) in my 150+ movie newly purchased pile, so I thought I'd run through them in the next week or so. Haven't watched Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) since I was a kid and all those years ago I never appreciated how much this movie rules. Knuckles (Miniseries) (2024) (Paramount+ - 4K UHD) (First Time Watch) "Knuckles the Echidna teaches deputy Wade Whipple the techniques of the Echidna warrior." A minor step up from the decent enough Sonic films. Nothing major, but a very breezy and easy watch of six thirty minute episodes (No reason this couldn't have been a 100 minute film). Big Dris is still great fun in the title role and has solid chemistry with Adam Pally. The humour is hit-and-miss with some very cringe stuff, but there's some decent gags and lines here and there with some solid guest stars, but there's a bigger dose of heart than I expected that worked well. Watchable fun, nothing more, nothing less. Some bangers on the soundtrack too. I put this on my story last night but thought it deserved a full post. Last night during mine and my gfs movie marathon which included: Grave encounters, all 3 Toby maguire Spider-Man movies, the descent, Sharknado and the human centipede part 2, and we decided to traumatise ourselves with this disturbing disaster. I think this is the first horror movie I have watched where it has been made ILLEGAL for it to be streamed/put on dvd in colour due to the amount of gore. In the uk, the film is completely in black and white and if anything it adds a bit more disturbing depth and detail to the movie as you actually have to focus on the main character. Though the movie was thoroughly disturbing, we still had a fun time subjecting ourselves to this film and even giggled at some absurdly weird parts, IYKYK… anyways we had a decent time watching this but the rest of the films were much more enjoyable and entertaining. Soldier Blue Origin: USA Year: 1970 Directed by: Ralph Nelson Review: It's Western time and I took this as an opportunity to watch a Western that has been on my watchlist for ages: Soldier Blue. Soldier Blue is about the young recruit Honus, who, along with civilian Cresta Lee, survives a Cheyenne attack on a cash transport. Together with Cresta, who lived with the Cheyenne for some time, he sets out on a journey to his company. Both have different views on the army, the so-called civilization of America and the Native Americans. Despite their differences, the two get closer and sleep with each other in the end. But when Horus comes across his company, which is planning a counterattack on the nearby Cheyenne village, his worldview is completely torn apart. When it comes to making movies, there’s a saying that is “Show, don’t tell.” This would have served Soldier Blue very well. The film expands it’s premise of Native Americans having their land stolen in a bloody way in two ways. On the one hand, we have the conversations and banter between Horus and Cresta, which are quite amusing to watch from time to time, but in the long run they take up too much space. This is a problem because these conversations always remain somehow superficial and naive. However, this is a bit thin for the entire middle section of the movie. On the other hand, we also have the imagery, like the Cheyenne, who attack the money transport, but are never portrayed as “evil, uncivilized savages” in the course of the film. Or the army, which initially appears in the role of the victim, but towards the end exterminates an entire Cheyenne village without compassion, which is also depicted here explicitly and in a very bloody and gory manner. But none of these groups are depicted in a monotone way. There are different views of how to handle with the opposite sides. And in the end, all of this leads to the final and bloody confrontation, which is very explicit. This makes the message of the film come across even more strongly. Overall, Soldier Blue has very strong imagery, but also a weak middle section that is clearly portrayed too naively. 7 out of 10 points
