Writer: Arkadiy Strugatskiy (novel), Boris Strugatskiy (novel), Andrei Tarkovsky (screenplay) Photography: Aleksandr Knyazhinskiy . @emilyenabnit did not watch . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I give this Soviet film four stars because it is a beautiful work of art, but it is difficult to engage with. This film is very thought provoking, intellectually stimulating and wrestles with faith and human nature, but it is very slow. The pacing is intentional as Tarkovsky uses long single takes and drawn out scenes. Three characters make their way through an area called “the Zone” to a place called “the Room” which supposedly grants the deepest desire of anyone who enters. The story doesn’t focus on the destination itself but the internal journey each character has on the way. Tarkovsky was a devout Orthodox Christian and the film has overt Christian themes. In spite of the intentionality it takes to watch this film, I recommend it. It is a work of art. I’ll leave you with a quote of one of the characters. “May everything come true. May they believe. And may they laugh at their passions. For what they call passion is not really the energy of the soul, but merely friction between the soul and the outside world. But, above all, may they believe in themselves and become as helpless as children. For softness is great and strength is worthless. When a man is born, he is soft and pliable. When he dies, he is strong and hard. When a tree grows, it is soft and pliable. But when it’s dry and hard, it dies. Hardness and strength are death’s companions. Flexibility and softness are the embodiment of life. From 1979 to 1989, during the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan, over 724 million square meters were indiscriminately littered with landmines. The Soviets began a brutal campaign and planted, and in many cases just dumped landmines in all of Afghanistan's 29 provinces, including the capital Kabul. Mines were put in grazing areas, footpaths, agricultural and irrigation systems, and residential areas. The Soviets used several variations of the PMN mines, which are considered very dangerous to attempt to traditionally disarm, especially if the mines aren't freshly placed. Another common mine found in Afghanistan was the PFM-1, mine known colloquially as either the “butterfly mine” or “green parrot”. The mines are so light that they could travel down streams or rivers and easily camouflaged into almost any environment. The mines take less than 11 lbs of pressure to detonate and were said to have caused a high number of casualties to children since the mines looked like a toy, and since they were very sensitive to pressure, a child's grip could detonate the mine as it was being picked up. According to shoddy Soviet records that were turned over to NATO after the Soviets left Afghanistan, they estimated they laid and dropped around 30 to 50 million mines. Thanks to poor Soviet bookkeeping, there were many incidents in which soldiers parachuted and landed in minefields, helicopters landed in mine fields, and helicopters would hover and let soldiers jump out and unknowingly jump on landmines. Since the Soviets left Afghanistan, attempts have been made to disarm and clear out the landmine infestation, and it is believed that now only 2 of Afghanistan's 29 provinces may be mine free. The amount of civilian deaths the indiscriminate mine laying has caused and still continues to cause is shocking, seeing as Afghanistan is still considered one of the top 3 heaviest mined countries in the world. Even today, civilians still have to deal with the aftermath of the heavy Soviet landmining. ***Continued in comments***

In the early hours of the morning on Saturday, April 26, during a technical test at the Chernobyl power plant, an abnormal increase in power and a subsequent sharp increase in steam pressure occurred in the RBMK-1000 nuclear reactor in Unit 4 of the power plant. At 01:23:46 Moscow time, a massive steam expansion blew off the reactor lid and resulted in a fire, a series of further explosions and a meltdown of the reactor. The reactor core and associated safety systems were immediately destroyed or severely damaged. ☢️ A radioactive cloud was released into the atmosphere, which progressed through the western part of the Soviet Union, eastern Europe and Scandinavia to the entire northern hemisphere. The Soviet media was silent, official information was missing. More than 44,000 residents of Pripyat were evacuated by 1,255 buses during the afternoon of the following day. The world learned the first information not from Kiev or Moscow, but from Stockholm.
