The best part of this movie is, by far, Dev Patel. Not just in front of the camera (of which he is absolutely incredible), but likewise from behind in his directorial debut. Just focusing on the directing alone, this is remarkably well made. From a seasoned director l'd be impressed, but from a novice l'm astonished. Beyond the fact that the action sequences are amazing to behold (besides a few unfortunate instances of shaky cam), the fundamental cinematic craftsmanship is quite breathtaking. Everything down to the gorgeous cinematography, the visceral sound design, the unnerving atmospheric intensity, and the eccentric music choices all come together to form a product that truly stands out unique in the action genre. I've seen some comparisons to John Wick, and while I understand the inclination, I think that's a very simple and hollow way to categorize this film. Although it does follow a lone mercenary on a revenge-driven conquest in a neon underground world, this is far more meditative and spiritual than John Wick ever was. I almost hesitated to classify this as an "action" film, because the drama of the spiritual journey is far more prevalent than the fighting scenes. However, that being said, I think the story and pacing could've used some improvement. While I did appreciate the slow burn nature of the drama and the mystical tone of the ambience, likewise think it sometimes went a little bit too far in those moments, thus resulting in a pace that surpassed its runtime and dragged out the narrative. Overall, this is a really impressive demonstration of what Dev Patel is capable of from behind the camera. Though the story occasionally ran a bit too slow for my preference, the directorial talent is undeniably extraordinary. I think with future stronger scripts, Patel could easily become one of the most unique and distinctive voices working within the action genre.

From the trailer alone, it looked a lot of fun. Plus, Bill Skarsgard is ridiculous talented individual, love Jessica Rothe from the Happy Death Day movies, and Sam Raimi is one of the producers of the movie.  Well, the first 20 minutes started off a bit slow and some parts were a bit predictable. Rather than that, I had an amazing time with this, it was a blast. Bill Skarsgard was pretty awesome. You know, he is such an amazing actor, he doesn't need any dialogue. Plus, I really enjoyed watching Jessica Rothe in this and it is great to see Famke Janssen.  And love all the action sequences, they were outstanding. « COCO AVANT CHANEL » d’Anne FONTAINE avec Audrey Tautou, Benoît Poelvoorde et Alessandro Nivola (2009) Le scénario est bien construit, on ne s’ennuie pas une minute, ce n’est pas un sujet lourd c’est même agréable à regarder au vu des informations qu’ils renferment sur l’histoire de cette femme. Anne Fontaine pose en images les origines du style vestimentaire de la femme moderne, plus simple, plus affirmée, et moins une belle cruche satinée. Je dois avouer qu’elle connaît très bien son sujet qui a décidé de raconter le début de cette femme hors du commun qui m’a assez intéressé même si j’ai trouvé qu’il est un peu long à certains moments. La réalisation est soignée et les prises de vue sont agréables à l’œil, mais il manque quelque chose pour qu’elle soit brillante. La lumière est très belle, très bien travaillée et exploitée. Le montage est bon mais je trouve que le film souffre d’un problème de rythme comme je l’ai évoqué au-dessus. De plus, cela hésite sans cesse entre biographie académique et véritables trouvailles scénaristiques… Je note tout de même le choix audacieux mais réussi de ne se concentrer uniquement sur son accession aux portes de la gloire… Et vous, l’avez vous vu ? Review Blankman 1994 DVD Rating: 4/5 Blankman is a silly take on the vigilante hero that’s funny in its own right without outstaying its welcome. This film was met with critical disdain on its initial release and I think it plays much better now. Filmmaker Mike Binder switches to comedy-parody from his previous films focused on character drama. Marlon Wayans at this point was attempting to find the right material for the leading character, but this would mark him down after the minor success of Mo’ Money. The film would prove to be a commercial disappointment and critics had no idea what to make of it. The superhero parody concept was anything new with Hero at Large being one of the few memorable ones, but none of them had been commercially successful. This film had the unfortunate task of opening one month after Jim Carrey’s The Mask grew into a huge box office and cultural sensation. I found this to be an underrated comedy that takes chances and the sequence with the mayor takes this in a more grounded direction. It’s enjoyable when you run with it and Wayans is certainly committed to his performance. This was a bold choice for everyone and sadly it never found a bigger audience. Final Movie of my Obscure Arnie Triple Feature: Bogged down by some bad 90s CG, a weak screenplay with some terrible one-liners, and not enough James Cromwell, Eraser (1996) isn't great but it has its moments. The rail gun stuff is cool, James Caan seemed to be awake and into this performance (not always the case at this point in his career), and the final act is a lot of fun with Arnie and his mafia backup saving the day.
