Otočić Sv Marije i benediktanski samostan. Mesto gde poželeh da ostanem nedelju dana u meditaciji i radeći jogu. Otočić je veličine svega 120x200m, na kom je u 12. veku izgradjen benediktanski samostan, a potom i crkva Svetoj Mariji. Kako to često biva, različite okolnosti su uticale na arhitekturu crkvice i samostana, ali i funkciju koju su obavljale. Dugi niz godina, Benediktanci su ovde slavili Boga, a onda je došao Napoleon i ugasio samostan, da bi '60tih sakralni prostor bio pretvoren u hotel i tek '90tih predat u vlasništvo dubrovačke biskupije. MLJET - “het groene eiland” bestaat voor 1/3 uit een nationaal park, een hoogtepunt voor de meeste bezoekers. Maar naast het nationaal park is ook de rest van het eiland de moeite waard om te bezoeken. Je vindt er kleine oude dorpjes en prachtige stranden! Het dorpje Prozurska Luka is er daar één van. Dit oude dorpje is ontstaan doordat de lokale vissers en zeilers de baai gebruikten als haven om zichzelf en hun boten te beschermen tegen heftige stormen. Op een dag besloten ze hier maar te blijven en ontstond dit kleine dorpje! MLJET – vanaf het hoogste punt aan de westkant van het eiland houden lokale brandweermannen al tientallen jaren de wacht om vanaf hier het gebied te controleren op bosbranden. In de jaren 80 bouwden ze hier zelf een soort van uitkijktoren maar die is inmiddels vervangen voor een moderne versie. ⛵ MLJET KAO MJESTO BRODOLOMA SV. PAVLA Sv. Pavao je rođen između 5. i 10. godine poslije Krista i bio je pripadnik židovske dijaspore, pod imenom Saul ili Savao. Imao je i rimsko građansko pravo koje mu je davalo brojne privilegije u životu i rimsko ime Paulus. Prvi dio svojeg života proveo je u Maloj Aziji, u gradu Tarzu, nakon čega studira u Jeruzalemu. Nakon studija postaje rabin. U jednome trenutku navodno doživljava preobraćenje te se pridružuje Isusu i njegovim učenicima. Po Bibliji, Pavlu je uskrsli Isus naredio da propovijeda kršćanstvo te on kreće na tri misionarska putovanja. Nakon trećeg putovanja u Jeruzalemu je optužen da je vodio nežidove u Hram. Pavao ovdje poseže za svojom privilegijom rimskog građanskog prava te zahtjeva da mu se sudi kao rimskom građaninu. Zbog toga poduzima putovanje u Rim. Za tog putovanja Pavlov brod nailazi na oluju koja ga je bacala po moru Adriji tri dana. Naposljetku su dospjeli do otoka naziva Melita, ispred kojeg se brod nasukao na hrid. Cijela se posada spasila i doplivala do otoka gdje su ih ugostili lokalni stanovnici i njihov poglavar Publije koji je stolovao na svojem imanju. Spominje se i da je Pavao prilikom prikupljanja drva na otoku naišao u krošnji stabla na zmiju otrovnicu, koju je bacio u vatru i time zadivio lokalce. Brodolomci su na otoku ostali tri mjeseca, nakon čega su otplovili dalje. Jedna od pretpostavki je da su se ova događanja zbila upravo na Mljetu (druga je opcija Malta). U prilog Mljetu ide to što se nalazi na moru Adriji (Jadran), što je na njemu kršćanstvo prisutno od najranijih dana i što je tamo stolovao rimski upravitelj otoka (vjerojatno u Polačama). Mljet je također prije dolaska mungosa bio poznat kao otok zmija. Na vitraju u crkvi Sv. Marije prikazan je upravo brodolom Sv. Pavla. Djelo je akademskog slikara Josipa Biffela i izrađen je 2006. . The island of Mljet offers wonderful opportunities for hiking. From the famous saltwater lakes, a hiking path leads to the scenic lookout point of Montokuc, a 770 ft peak located in the center of the park. This moderate hike is well marked, winding through the forest along a dirt path, eventually opening up to reveal spectacular panoramic views of the island, its lakes, and Pelješac and Korčula beyond. Viewing the park from this vantage point is the best way to truly appreciate just how vibrantly green Mljet is. If this 2.5 mile round trip hike isn’t enough, consider the 27 mile long Mljet Hiking Trail (Mljetska planinarska obilaznica, MPO) that spans more than half of the island. The route is split into shorter segments, each meant to take from 5 – 7 hours of hiking, designed to be completed in succession over 3 – 4 days. The entire trail is clearly marked with 20 control points along the way. On the island of Mljet there are three large lakes and in the middle of one is a very small island on which a monastery was built in the mid-12th century. The Benedictine monastery was re-built a number of times, and acquired the appearance of a Renaissance building, much like a summer residence. According to local legend, since the front face of the monastery used to stand directly over the sea's edge, the Benedictine Monks used to toss their fishing lines out of the window, and fish from their cell. It is also interesting to note that at the end of 14th century, the monastery was used as a quarantine, the first one in Croatia, since the monks were also practicing pharmacists. At one point the monastery was expanded and connected to a complete defense complex to defend against pirates. A defense wall built with towers, and the wooded area and courtyard were landscaped. The only building to remain outside of the defense complex was the old mill. There are recordings that the passage through Solinski Channel was closed off with chains which I find one of the most fascinating defenses of the middle ages. The monastery on the little island was connected to the mainland of the island by walls from both ends - clever Benedictines raised fish in the closed basin. However, the remains of the walls can only be seen from the air, and now it below the water. It is also worth noting that these freshwater lakes became saltwater because the monks dug a passage into them from the sea to make getting in and out easier...

Sunset finds me on yet another Croatian Island enjoying another paradise. Mljet is probably most famous for the lack of people, the national forest, and the saline lakes. My E-bike was no match for the mountains and the lakes provided an incredible backdrop for a day of riding, swimming, and enjoying nature. Forest-shrouded Mljet is often referred to as the most seductive of all the Adriatic islands and I can see why. My Christian friends may be interested to know that Paul as noted in the Bible (Acts 27.39-28.11) was shipwrecked while sailing the Adriatic and is believed to have landed on Mljet. There is a cliff of St. Paul as well as the votive church in the eastern part of the island.
