I often wonder about my own progression in this industry. I mentioned about the stress that chefs have to deal with. Most of the time, that stress is downloaded onto employees. And I can tell you, that my first year in this industry was extremely stressful for me. It didn’t seem like I could do anything right. So much stress, that I nearly developed an ulcer. If I had kept going internalizing my stress, it would have gone full blown. The tests I had, all pointed in that direction. My doc basically said that I needed to find a way to relieve my stress in a more healthy way. That is when I started singing. I mean, not really. I have always sung. My friends In high school were constantly asking me to stop wailing. Music has always been with me. Two years of cello and five years of clarinet drive it into you. But honestly, I was singing long before then. It convinced me that my voice has always been my best instrument. But more than that, it grounds me. I could have 50 bills lined up in front of me, but if I could sing, I could get through them without much worry. Music takes me out of myself and allows me to focus on tasks without worry. If you hear me singing, know that I am in my best possible place. Grounded. And it isn’t only about stress. It is about being in my space and happy. You can choose to let the stress get to you, or you can choose to find an outlet that allows you peace within your work. Maybe that is how I progressed. It’s treat Friday.
