A couple of weeks ago I’d just finished up a walk when my husband phones up, announcing the kids dinner choice - fish and chips on the beach. Out of the blue, my 6-year-old pipes up and says ‘Mum, can you not eat all our chips today…..’ Talk about a reality check! You have to live kids and their brutal honesty. But …she had a point, I do, do that! I do say I’m opting out of fish and chips and then proceed to eat all the kids chips and then lie to myself that I didn’t eat fish and chips for dinner!! Dit is ‘n tall order. 4h30 sit ek nog ewe en kyk met moerse belangstelling die hoogtepunte van die Wildeklawer skoletoernooi. 4h45 begin ek die treadmill afstof en olie toe ook sommer die band, maar speel eintlik net vir tyd. Tanya hard aan die oefen sê toe vir my: “Danny jy is besig om te procrastinate.” 😡 Nou kykie dit is so goed jy sê vir my ek is slapgat. Dit was so reguit en eerlik - iets wat ek waardeer van haar. Inflammation is a natural part of our body’s defence system, helping us fight infections, heal wounds, and mend tissues. But when inflammation sticks around for too long, it can cause problems. At the cellular level, chronic inflammation means our immune cells stay activated for extended periods, releasing signaling molecules like cytokines and chemokines. This can attract even more immune cells, keeping the inflammation going. One big issue with chronic inflammation is that it can harm our tissues. Continuous release of these signaling molecules can lead to oxidative stress, where the balance between harmful reactive oxygen species and our body’s ability to neutralise them is off. This can damage our cells’ structures, like proteins and DNA, causing tissue dysfunction and organ damage. Chronic inflammation can also mess up our cell signaling, causing abnormal cell growth. It even messes with our metabolism. By interfering with insulin signaling, chronic inflammation can lead to insulin resistance, a key feature of type 2 diabetes, and it’s closely tied to ongoing low-level inflammation. In short, chronic inflammation can cause serious harm by damaging tissues, messing with cell function, and fuelling various diseases. After over 2 years of struggling with a whole heap of non descript symptoms and feeling constantly exhausted and stressed however much I slept, bloated and low mood. I changed my diet but could not shift any weight! I saw the GP several times and all blood tests came back clear. I was dizzy, chronic sinusitis, I had skin changes, the list continued! I was spending 100’s if not 1000’s of hours of reading and listening to podcasts and researching trying to get answers for myself. I was fed up of reading or receiving advice of how I needed to remove the stress from my life in order to reduce the feelings of burnout and the subsequent symptoms I was feeling. My main source of stress is juggling mum life while my son has constant hospital admissions from a rare disease. Now I’m clearly not removing my children from my life, so none of this advice was helpful. My sister sent me a great book about burn out and in there it describes the difference between a stress vs a stressor.
