In 2011, Jim Myers, an Oregon State University vegetable breeder, made a pioneering breakthrough by introducing the first purple tomato, Indigo Rose, which contains anthocyanins—a beneficial compound also found in blueberries. This innovation paralleled with the development of the genetically modified version of the purple tomato, but Myers' approach through traditional breeding led to the creation of these vivid tomatoes, now cultivated globally, from small farms to large agricultural operations. Over a decade of dedication, Myers and his team have meticulously crossbred tomatoes with the richest purple coloration, repeatedly selecting the most promising candidates. This effort has expanded the initial offering to include Indigo Cherry Drops, Indigo Pear Drops, Indigo Kiwi and the latest addition, Midnight Roma. Providing financial literacy for young people is deeply ingrained in our bank’s core values. So when Ohio State University Extension asks for volunteers to help with their Real Money Real World program, we are more than happy to send some bankers to help. That’s because this program gives students in local schools the opportunity to participate in a lesson where they are given an imaginary identity and income which they must use to purchase the things they need in life. They have to choose housing that’s within their budget as well as food, utilities, transportation and other life necessities. Our bankers again this year went to schools in Vinton and Fairfield counties to help out and they came back with all kinds of great stories about working with the kids. During the 2022-23 school year, Oregon State University Extension Service’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) team piloted three lesson plans that teach elementary school students about the cultural significance of three healthy foods – squash, greens, and corn – to Indigenous Americans, families across the African diaspora, and Latin Americans. The nutrition educators’ goal is that one day, Oregon students from many different backgrounds will be able to learn that healthy foods come in many shapes and flavors – including flavors their families know and love. Are you able to use vinegar to control dandelions in your grass so that the clippings are safe to compost? The standard recommendation for lawn care is to remove one-third of the leaf blade with each mowing. That leaves plenty of the leaf to photosynthesize and support the roots. Grass plants managed in this way are strong competitors with weeds for mineral and water resources. If you apply a standard weed and feed and remove one-third of the leaf blade with each mowing, you should be safe to compost grass clippings from the fourth cutting after the application. All agricultural operations that welcome visitors – whether for on-farm education, direct sales, entertainment, recreation, special events, and more – are invited to complete the survey. So, if you offer education or rent event space on your farm, have a farmstand, a petting zoo, offer pick-your-own, farm stays, or other on-farm experiences, your insights are crucial. By participating in this survey, you’ll help us pinpoint the types of support farmers like you require – whether it’s business assistance, developing networks, applying for grants, or navigating zoning and liability issues. Our goal is to help build the resources you need, improve your access to critical information and opportunities, and shape policy decisions that impact your industry. This survey is part of a collaborative project led by Penn State with the University of Vermont, Oklahoma State University, the University of Maine, Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development, and other partners across the country.
