Update: I checked in with other people and found out Oregon Myrtle seedlings have become so common in the Portland area that at least one habitat restoration site is pulling them, since they inhibit the growth of other species around them. Oregon Myrtle was introduced by botanist David Douglas as an ornamental plant in 1829. The first tree was brought to Portland from Douglas County in 1955 and to Oak Grove in 1969. The trees don't produce fruit for 30-40 years, which corresponds to the initial naturalized sitings in the area and with the uptick in the vigorous reseeding of myrtles by birds and squirrels that people are reporting to me. ... Oregon Myrtle AKA California Bay (Umbellularia californica) volunteers Gladstone Nature Park. Oregon Myrtle is a native species that is found mostly in Southern Oregon, but there are a few trees growing in the wild in the Portland metro area and near the park in Oak Grove, Oregon City, and Camassia in West Linn. The first tree in the local area was identified in Oak Grove in 1969. It is believed that the seeds were spread by birds and squirrels from ornamental plantings. The first tree was brought to Portland from Douglas County in 1955. We feel fortunate to have two volunteer trees at the park, and a volunteer planted a third tree in the same area. With the global heating crisis, we are likely to see more of these special trees that are endemic to Oregon and California growing further north. Sometimes I just can’t toss pieces of pretty wood so I make them up into calls that are too small or odd shaped or take a handful of brass powder to fill all the cracks. They usually end up being my calls because normal hunters want normal, pretty calls. Here are two that are probably going to be my calls. The little one is made from Oregon myrtle burl. For fun, it is held together with four screws (two would have done the job). The other is cut from a cool piece of manzanita that has been staring at me for years. It was covered with cracks and has a bark edge that I sanded down and left. It is made without screws, the lanyard holding the two pieces together. Both are a little finicky to tune, but sound great when you find the sweet spot. I tuned the small call to sound higher pitched like a young bird, while the manzanita call has a prefect tone to imitate older birds. When you travel the Oregon Coast, you see shop after shop for Myrtlewood products. The finished wood has a lovely pattern and color - but, we did not know what the actual tree looked like. So, we went on this little walk up a mountainside near the Rogue River to see Oregon's Oldest Myrtle Tree. It was interesting how it's grown and survived. Myrtle leaves have a nice pattern on the branches. Not a very distinguished tree by itself, but again, the polished wood is really nice. This is a neat two-way quail call. There is a rubber band call for valley quail (Gambel’s and scaled quail, too). There is also a whistle call for mountain quail. The call is made from Oregon myrtle with the whistle cap made from manzanita. The smaller pieces average 12″-20″ wide – The larger ones span as wide as 48″. Figure ranges from light to heavy. Boards are green/ drying.
