. Thoothukudi – Pearl Free Divers – (Part Three) Pearl bearing molluscs occur or live in the depths of the ocean and are manually inaccessible from the surface. Molluscs were retrieved by freediving, a technique, where the diver descends to the bottom, collects what he can and surfaces on a single breath. When I say it’s been happening for thousands of years, what it means is, it was done without any modern diving protective gear or divers mask or surface supplied diving helmet for underwater works, that’s available these days. Before the 20th century, the only means of obtaining pearls was by free diving and manually gathering very large numbers of pearl oysters or mussels from the ocean floor or lake or river bottom in a wide mouthed basket. The bivalves or molluscs were then brought to the surface, opened and the tissues searched. More than a ton were searched in order to find at least 3-4 quality beads. So you can imagine how difficult a task it was. To find enough pearl oysters, free-divers were often forced to descend to depths of over 100 feet on a single breath with stones tied to their bodies to act as ballast during decent to the depths or accent to surface. When reach the surface the stoned were untied and they hauled up on board. After some rest they had to repeat the process. The pearl diving locations weren’t close to shore, it was at mid sea. This job of the free divers had inbuilt occupational hazards, such as exposing themselves to hostile underwater creatures like sharks and stingrays (shark attack were common); to contend with strong waves and underwater currents, eye damage, ear drum burst and drowning due to blackout on resurfacing. Because it was such a dangerous occupation that requires expertise, there were always manpower shortage and young boys ever at the age 14 were compelled in to it, by manipulation, trickery or by threats. . Its nowhere near that. Here is what it really means: Pearl fishery is a fishery where they fish for pearl oysters. The ‘Pearl Fishery Coast’ refers to a coastal area of southern India, extending along the Coromandel coast from Tuticorin to Cape Comorin which was ruled by ‘The Paravars' in the past. Effectively it’s in the Gulf of Mannar which is between India and Sri Lanka and on its Indian side. Pearl fishing is actually known as pearl hunting or pearling. It is the activity of recovering or attempting to recover pearls from wild molluscs, usually oysters or mussels, in the sea or freshwater. Its been going in this coast for thousands of years. Thoothukudi – The Pearl City – (Part One) . Thoothukudi’s anglicised name was Tuticorin during the British Empire era in India. Its also famously known as the ‘Pearl City’. There are two only cities in India well known for pearls, they are Hyderabad and Thoothukudi. Hyderabad is more famous for its pearl industry and Incidentally it is 300 KM away from the sea, pearl is usually fished out from the sea, nevertheless, pearl fishing happens in Hyderabad. Their pearls are fresh water pearls. Thanks to the Nizam of Hyderabad family’s obsession for pearls which induced the fresh water pearl fishing in the lakes of Hyderabad, in the 18th to mid 20th century. The Nizams were known for their love of precious stones and pearls, and they would often adorn themselves with their jewels. A wide variety of pearls, including freshwater, saltwater and cultured pearls are now available. The most popular of them is the freshwater pearl, which is cultivated in the rivers and lakes surrounding the city. Thoothukudi has a long history of pearl fishery, and the coast was once renowned for its pearl industry.
