Filtering the Patapsco and Back River, naturally! By installing mussel and oyster beds, a #DesignDay24 team from Dept. of Environmental Health and Engineering (@johnshopkinsehe) is improving water quality—boosting bivalve populations that filter pollution from wastewater treatment plants. Historically, natural bivalve reefs kept these rivers healthy, but overfishing and pollution have depleted them. Oysters and mussels act as natural water filters, and they reduce nutrient levels as well. The oysters and mussels will start as spat—baby shellfish—grown in cages in the waters near the wastewater treatment plants. Once they’re grown, the plan calls for the oysters to be moved to an existing reef off Fort Carroll. The mussels will be moved to a reef on the Back River. Here are some highlights of my catch of last few days together with the view of where these shells come from. We stayed on anchor in some incredible remote islands in Indonesia, they don’t even have names in google maps, only the bigger island next to it called Pulau Sabuda. We called this bay - Turtle love bay, as it is place where almost every morning sea turtles come to mate 🫶🏽. The hidden beach is full of shells, especially the minis and micros- my absolute love. Happy #fossilfriday! This is the biggest bivalve I've ever found from a genus called Inoceramus. The largest specimen of this enormous invertebrate reaches nearly 2 metres! (Although most are considerably smaller) This fossil is preserved in chalk, making it very delicate and crumbly, as you can probably tell from dust left behind in the pictures 😅 However, some parts of the shell do still remain intact. Just got back from Great Keppel Wop-pa Island. It was beautiful and I found these treasures on Leekes beach and tried to cast some of the textures from fragile cores. Sadly much of the fringing reef, like much of the Great Barrier Reef has now been bleached and colonised by algae. Due not to these shellfish bystanders! Selfish humans instead. It was quite devastating to see. Large shell holes due to human activity, not predatory sea snails which i also found evidence of. Apparently the beach recently escaped the fate of becoming a Gina-Marina. More Clamming memories with my niece @meiyday and her friends! Last year we all clammed together and it was such an incredible season. Sadly this time around it was not the same. We were wondering why so many people had empty buckets or just a few clams. They weren’t showing in the sand like last year where we easily limited out. We were lucky to end up with about 5 by the time we left. That’s how it goes sometimes with Adventures! But I always have a plan B! So we ended up foraging for Mussels after calling it quits. The scallops' famed eyes, numbering up to a hundred, are rarely photographed with their graceful tentacles, likely because scallop tentacles are much reduced or scarcely extended in adults. This is a rare sight. Past research suggests that swimming behaviour, autotomous tentacles and complex vision evolved in scallops as defence against highly cognizant and agile predators, including rays and skates. Corbicula Fluminea or Asian Clam is something I grew up with around my toes when visiting the nearest delta as a child. “Clam & Bobu Sumitake” - Working on F2/F3s as they guys are prolific breeders but line culling is a must to keep that extracorporeal up!! After doing some research and finding how clams & mollusks can improve water quality by filtering out excess nitrogen and sequestering carbon into their shells I decided to bring these little guys back into my life as an experiment. Upon some first hand test trials I have found 1 - 2 tiny clams can decrease a significant amount of nitrogen from your Medaka tank or pond.
