Last week in Canberra I attended the launch of a new scientific report about the conservation status of marine ecosystems surrounding Australia’s Heard Island and McDonald Islands in the Southern Ocean 🌊🐧🐟 Minister for Environment and Water the Hon. @tanyaplibersek launched the report, which discussed the measures needed to protect these incredible marine ecosystems into the future. Penguins in parliament 🐧 Last night we launched a new independent scientific report with @marineconservation.au exploring Australia’s Heard and McDonald Islands, their rich and remarkable marine ecosystem and the measures needed to protect them into the future. Most importantly, the vast majority of the park - an area larger than Germany - will be a marine sanctuary, the strongest level of protection possible. Since the draft plan to triple the size of the Macquarie Island marine park was released earlier this year, our community has worked together to ensure this process resulted in strong protection. Thanks to many thousands of concerned Australians who sent letters, signed petitions and made submissions, together we have helped to give Macquarie’s wildlife the best possible chance to survive and thrive into the future. Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek’s decision will give world-leading protection to one of the most unique environments on the planet, while allowing the existing relatively well-managed and sustainable fishery to continue. And the Australian Government wants to know what you think! Lying 1,500 kilometres south of Tasmania and halfway to Antarctica, Macquarie is a lush and windy wonderland teeming with wildlife, including albatross, seals, whales and penguins. Some species, such as the royal penguin, are found nowhere else on Earth. Macquarie’s vast and varied wildlife rely upon the surrounding waters for food, with some species travelling hundreds of kilometres to gather what they need. It is our responsibility to ensure their home is protected. Marine parks with large, highly protected sanctuaries are one of the best tools we have to help marine life build resilience and to keep our oceans healthy.
