Seeing this elephant seal pup's little face brings tears to my eyes... It seems to have sadness etched into it, especially given the runnels from the eyes where salt is expelled but creates the impression of utter despair. Mind you, these little ones are really subjected to tough love, abandoned by their mums when only a few weeks old and left to fend for themselves. It must be a terrifying prospect for a young seal, and it takes some time before they realise that they are actually capable of looking after themselves. There seems to be a day for everything now and apparently today is world penguin day?? Whatever, it gives me an excuse to post a photo of one of my favourite species of birds in the world, the rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome). These charismatic little penguins are noisy, smelly and clumsy and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM. Happy world penguin day! Most of the little white specks in this photo are Erect Crested Penguins / Tawaki nana hฤซ. I thought instead of a cute close up of a penguin, I would try and highlight how insane some of these colonies look at a distance. The Bounty Islands, 670 kilometres southwest of New Zealand, are one of the only places these penguins breed. The Bounties are chunks of Jurassic-age granite, sticking up out of the ocean, with not a speck of plant life to be found. I find it incredible that places like this, so scarily inhospitable to humans, are teeming with life and absolutely jam packed with birds. Watching the penguins make their way up and down these rocky cliffs is impressive. With their ungainly waddles, they dodge fur seals and nimbly hop up and down the granite with very few mishaps. The odd penguin will take a tumble and roll into the sea, but I haven't seen any unhappy outcomes of this process yet. Erect crested penguins are endemic to the Bounty Islands and Antipodes Islands groups. They are declining in population size, likely due to reduced food in the Southern Ocean. For me, drawing and painting from life is a form of listening, a way of understanding and discovering the visible, and the information contained in these moments falls like a sediment to settle in the soul. Itโs also a way of feeling deeply connected, not only to nature but also to my true self. Somewhere deep inside our core there lies a connection to the natural world from a time when man was a more integral part of it, and in these moments that closeness is awoken. As I sat painting this albatross, amongst incessant wind and sleety squalls, I marvelled at its snow white plumage and the fine, wavy vermiculations and white edged feathering of the wing. Underpainting stage! A little timber board requires a special little bird - in this case a Black-bellied Storm-Petrel ๐ค At just 50-58 grams, itโs hard to imagine how these birds eke out an existence in the open ocean, but they are astonishingly tough! Storm-Petrels are one of my favourites to observe out on boats, because they fly just above the surface of the water so you get glimpses of them catching the tips of waves and pattering their feet along the water. Sub Antarctic Tidepooling I was on expedition in Antarctica from November 12th - December 1st. On Thursdays Iโm sharing Antarctic Throwbacks! This post is about tidepooling in las Islas Malvinas. If you know me, you know that I love exploring beaches at low tide. Being trained in terrestrial plant ecology, I understand very little of what I find in the intertidal zone, but part of the fun is being enthralled by curiosity to no end ๐ During this expedition I had the privilege of being surrounded by very smart intertidal people that indulged my bottomless curiosity with love and humor. We found a tiny sea star in a giant mussel bed! This beach was also the site of a shipwreck. King penguin from beak to tail. Reigning over the shoreline of South Georgia, the king penguin is a remarkably inquisitive bird. Penguin lineup ๐ง๐ง๐ง๐ง๐ง๐ง . Iโm keen to have a few species comparison pieces in my subantarctic show, and penguins are an obvious candidate to prioritise. We saw 6 species on our trip (though I did keep an eye out for others, like very lost Chinstraps), with King and Gentoo being the two largest. Preparing for this show feels very weirdโฆ I have a decent amount of time up my sleeve, but Iโm extremely wary of becoming complacent - thatโs exactly how the time manages to disappear too fast! But then again, regardless of how much I get done in the lead-up, itโs inevitable the last couple of weeks will be hectic. Eep! . The remote, subantarctic island of South Georgia is the most beautiful place on earth. And I know, I know, I know. Bold statement or what *throws down the gauntlet* . Once I had a boyfriend who used to make fun of me when we were traveling because everywhere we went, apparently I always exclaimed โwow, this is the most beautiful place Iโve ever been!โ In my defense, I meant it every single time. . But I swear, this time I mean it. Or at least itโs in my top 5. The fates have smiled on me and Iโve been able to visit South Georgia a few times on expeditions to Antarctica. This very cold, windy and wild island has wormed its way into my heart. A British overseas territory. Human population: 20. Penguin population: millions. . As a serious lover of mountains, South Georgia was next level beautiful. Everything about the views screamed power and wilderness. A long and narrow island almost 200 kilometers long, the mountains run like a spine the length of South Georgia with many dropping down into the sea with many fjords and bays along the coastline. South Georgia really felt like polar tundra meets the Alps. With penguins. . So many exciting things are happening in South Georgia, especially since my first trip when rats were finally eradicated (long live the birds!) and this past summer, like surveying the whales that are finally returning to SG whales (whaling here killed 175K). A pair of young Kings size each other up in Fortuna Bay, South Georgia. Fortuna was one of the few landings on the island free, for the most part, from Avian flu this season. Whilst penguins have shown relative resilience so far, there are growing concerns. Hoping these guys endure the coming winter well and we meet again next year ๐ง๐๏ธ

MAGELLANIC AMONGST THE KINGS โ Unlike most other penguin species that live in colonies, Magellanic penguins live in burrows. In the foreground of this photo a Magellanic emerges from its burrow while in the background, king penguins go about their penguin-y business in their colony. I saw a lot of hillsides in the Falkland Islands that were the sole domain of the Magellanics, but also came across a few situations like this with the species coexisting.
