"The rhino population in the Kruger has dwindled by nearly 80% since 2014, signaling an urgent need for action. South Africa is home to more than half of the 23,290 rhinos that remain in Africa. It is also where a large share of poaching incidents occur, making it the primary battleground for the survival of these creatures." On top of the ongoing risk of poaching, climate change influences could seriously impact rhino numbers. This is according to a scientific paper published after a two year study in which the scientists obtained climate modeling and rhino GPS coordinates in five national parks across Southern Africa, including the Kruger National Park. Over the past five years, more than half a million hectares of land, previously home to thriving rhino populations, have been lost. At the DβNyala Provincial Nature Reserve in Limpopo Province in 2022, WeWild Africa faced the heart-wrenching reality of relocating the last remaining rhino from this once thriving habitat. This issue is part of a broader context where private wildlife reserves, making up 20 million hectares or 16.8% of South Africa's landmass, face high anti-poaching costs and some have limited eco-tourism revenue. Partnering for rhino awareness. At Rhino Disharmonyβs Savioursβ Army campaign launch in Cape Town on 12 February, GKEPFβs Project Manager outlined the ongoing rhino poaching crisis and GKEPFβs cooperative, collaborative role in protecting the environment and preventing wildlife crime in the Greater Kruger. Tackling rhino poaching requires an impactful holistic approach that, amongst other things, addresses perceptions, socio-economic challenges, and direct rhino protection. Rhino Disharmony, originating from within GKEPF member reserves, leverages art in all its forms, including community art projects and visual campaigns, to draw attention to the rhino poaching crisis and reshape perceptions surrounding rhino horn use. At the music, art, and fashion-centred launch event were rhino-painted scarves by children from the Lalela Project, a Greater Kruger community initiative. Monday 12 February saw the successful launch of the Savioursβ Army at the Winchester Boutique Hotel in Cape Town. An army of rhino saviours and ambassadors, including Western Cape premier Alan Winde and Grammy winning music composer Harold Faltermeyer, gathered to throw their weight behind the campaign. The immersive extravaganza of art, music, fashion and conservation featured rhino painted scarves by the children from @lalelaproject that were showcased by models of @bossmodelsa. By leveraging art in all its forms and through visual campaigns like this, Rhino Disharmonyβs intention is to spotlight the rhino poaching crisis and to reshape perceptions about rhino horn use, which is pushing this magnificent species towards extinction. In this regard, Luke Haynes from @thegkepf shared sobering statistics indicating the crisis is far from over. All funds raised by Rhino Disharmony will assist GKEPF in their fight for rhino preservation in the Timbavati and Umbabat area.
