Everyone needs a little #joy and #tenderness. I was so privileged to watch this Red-Knobbed Coot in South Africa tend to a newly hatched chick whilst its sibling pecked away from inside the shell next to it. These amazing little #birds leave the nest within a few hours of being hatched to join their parents on the water, where they are fed and guarded until they fledge. #Nature is #beautiful, isn't it? This tender moment was a Judge’s Choice in the PACE contest and was displayed in a gallery showing. Seeing this reptilian #predator on #safaris evokes shivers of fear in many people. Whether originating in religious beliefs or cultural, #snakes have been demonized for millennia. One #story that is found in many unrelated #cultures is that of the #venomous snake requesting help from a person or #animal, who finally gives in and assists after the snake promises not to bite them. At the end of the journey, the snake inflicts a fatal bite, and when the victim asks "why, after you promised not to?" the snake replies, "You knew what I was when you picked me up." That parable is to warn us about people who have demonstrated to us that they are not #trustworthy. If they've proven they are a "snake," believe that, not their promises. Actions give you the information to make the best determination. I believe this little green fellow is a Spotted Bush Snake, but I am not a #snake expert. They are not venomous, which means they are harmless. Personally, I love snakes (real ones). I think they are #fascinating. I totally understand and empathize with other responses, however. I'm thankful this little charmer stopped for a minute so that I could get the photo, and let me admire its beauty. #reptile #africananimal #animaladdicts #reptilelovers #africanwildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifeadvocate #wildlifeconservation #africageophoto #snakesofafrica #Ibelieveyou #actionsspeaklouderthanwords

Happy #InternationalLeopardDay! I LOVE these gorgeous #cats. They are the most elusive of the #Big5, so it's a treat when I spot one (see what I did there 😂). It was a thrill to see this girl in the tree in the Greater #Kruger. Leopards are consider to have rosettes, not spots, and you can see them clearly on this beautiful ladyl. A center of dark gold is surrounded by black petals on a lighter background. This breaks up light and shadow, allowing leopards to blend in with impeccable camouflage. They say a leopard can't change its spots...that a parable to warn you that people will always be who they are: kind or selfish, thoughtful or thoughtless, trustworthy or deceitful, motivated or lazy...trust the spots. Outside of parables, leopard spots are like human fingerprints--no two patterns are the same, so we can identify individual leopards based on their spots. Poor, poor wildebeest...even with a mud mask and a spa day, they are just...not beautiful. Africans say that God made the wildebeest--also known as the gnu--last, using the leftover parts of other animals. They have the head of the warthog, the horns of the buffalo, the back of the hyena, the stripes of the zebra, the tail of the horse, and the beard of an old man. When I'm leading guests on a photo #safari, we always joke that these are "Budget Buffalo, made in China," and of course, any gnu joke goes, especially if it's a gnu joke that I haven't heard yet. I mean, come on!--who knew that there were new gnu jokes???? If you get a chance, check out the Comical Moments Portfolio on my website, where I stash the funnier side of wildlife photography. It's true--I don't spread fake gnus. 😂🤣😂🤣😂 #africansafari #photosafari #wildlifephotoraphy #canonphotography #canoncamera #animallovers #animaladdicts #wildlifeadvocate #naturephotography #africananimals #spaday #beautiful #big5 #ugly5 #africageophoto #natgeowild

Brown pelicans inhabit the Baja Peninsula in Mexico 🤎 After the breeding season (winter and spring), many pelicans will migrate north to stopover at the Salton Sea. But with large fish now virtually gone, fewer and fewer pelicans spend time at the lake. How does this loss of habitat and vital food source affect migratory pelicans on their long journeys? UPDATE: Today there are TWO lucky winners from both instagram and facebook since we have two different wolf stuffed animals! Welcome to day 5 of Lobo Week 2024! Make sure you read to the bottom of this post for our 🎉 DAILY TRIVIA QUESTION 🎉 & free giveaway! Lobo Week is held every year to highlight the conservation work that is being done for Mexican Gray Wolves. Everyday this week we will be sharing a Southwest Wildlife wolf intro, a bit of education on Mexican Gray Wolves, and a FREE GIVEAWAY with some of our exclusive wolf themed merch! For each giveaway, one lucky winner will be chosen from Facebook, and one from Instagram. We will DM you to get your shipping info! 🐺 Meet Maggie (F1479) and JJ (M2721), Southwest Wildlife's newest wolves! Maggie is actually daughter to Vera, another one of Southwest Wildlife's other wolves. She is 8 years old and was born at the Endangered Wolf Center in Missouri. JJ, a male wolf, is only 2 and was born at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. Both these wolves are still quite shy, so grabbing a pic hasn't been easy! 🐺 If you live near Phoenix, chances are the 'dog like' wild animal you saw is a coyote! Mexican Gray Wolves live North and East of Phoenix, spanning the border of Arizona and New Mexico, and are in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and the Gila National Forest. If you do think you see one but aren't quite sure, there are several easy ways to tell them apart. 1️⃣ - Size! Wolves are larger than coyotes. 2️⃣ - Tails! A wolf holds its tail straight back, while a coyote tends to tuck theirs in. 3️⃣ Ears! A coyotes ears are more pointy while a wolves ears are rounded. 🐺 Today's trivia question is...can you tell which animal is a wolf and which is a coyote? Tell us below (make sure you clarify option a and option b) for a chance to win a wolf stuffed animal! #mexicangraywolves #graywolf #loboweek #loboweek2024 #wildlifefact #wildlifeeducation #outdooreducation #wildlifeadvocate #coexist #coexistwithwildlife

Welcome to day 4 of Lobo Week 2024! 🐺 Meet Vera (F1374)! Born in 2014, this incredible wolf has helped mother 26 Mexican Gray Wolves! She is the only wolf at Southwest Wildlife to be successfully artificially inseminated. Many of her pups took part in cross-fostering programs where captivity born pups were introduced to wild mothers to help increase numbers of wild wolves. 🐺 Mexican Gray Wolves are an endangered species. Although conservation efforts are being made, there's still work to be done. Curious why there were so little at one point? Mexican wolves were common throughout their range in the mid-1800s. Toward the end of the century, high cattle stocking rates and low populations of native prey led to many wolves preying on livestock. This led to intensive efforts to eradicate wolves in the US. Many wolves were hunted, poisoned, and killed by both private citizens and government agents. 🐺 Want to win one of our wolf hats? Answer the following trivia question correctly and you could be picked! How many Mexican Gray Wolves were originally gathered to start the conservation program? Badger Trust and Wild Justice jointly instructed Leigh Day solicitors to send an urgent request to DEFRA on 22 March 2024 on their recently published consultation to evolve badger control policy and introduce additional cattle measures. They feel that, at the present time, there is insufficient information in the consultation materials published about what is proposed and the basis on which it has been brought forward. Due to the very short consultation process, they have asked DEFRA to respond by 28 March 2024 with this missing information, to allow sufficient time for consultees to respond to any additional information. They have also drawn attention to the fact that the Northern Ireland Executive consultation on bTB measures was recently found unlawful for a number of omissions. They are awaiting the response from DEFRA before deciding on further action. You can read the letter on the Badger Trust website. Now that it's Spring, I thought I should 'spring' myself back into action 🐣. Starting with a post about me. Last year, I started two new jobs and unfortunately one of them was not for me. I am still very keen on diversifying my career, so that I can work part-time in veterinary nursing and part-time in wildlife conservation. However, this is not easy. Especially when jobs are limited, you get extremely nervous in interviews and you are not good at promoting yourself. Anyways, I will continue to do what I am passionate about and I will get there in the end. So far this year, I have taken part in the @animal_welfare_conversations , @goddardvets Nursing Team Forum and @songbirdsurvival Get EduCATed guest blog. I have a few other projects lined up, which I cannot wait to share with you! I've updated my linktree to include some of the things I have been involved with, as I no longer have a website. I have some ideas for posts over the next month, but please let know what you would like to see. Due to being away from socials and the fact I do not make reels, I ask if you do enjoy my posts then please like, share, comment and save. This will help with the algorithm (I hope). Thank you to everyone who supports me, encourages me, inspires me and cheers me on or bigs me up when I do not do it myself! 💞 #wildlifevetnurse #wildlifeadvocate #vetnurse #citizenscientist #wildlife #wildlifehealth #wildlifeconservation #animalwelfare

Big news - join us next week for Lobo Week 2024! Every year during the last week of March @wolfconservationcenter runs #LoboWeek to celebrate the time when Mexican Gray Wolves were reintroduced in Arizona & New Mexico as part of a federal program to prevent extinction. It's also a special week where we can learn more about Mexican Gray Wolves. March 29th, 1998, was the date the first 11 Mexican Gray Wolves were released from captivity into Arizona to begin the recovery program for this endangered species. At this time, ZERO Mexican Gray Wolves remained the wild! This year is the 26th anniversary of that release. As a holding facility for Mexican Gray Wolves, Southwest Wildlife is passionate about the conservation and preservation of wolves. Each wolf has a name along with a special ID number called a studbook number. The wolf pictured is Luis (M1197), who was born in 2010 and lives with Melly (F1217) at Southwest Wildlife. Join us March 25th-29th for wolf introductions, wolf education, and FREE TRIVIA GIVEAWAYS with our wolf exclusive shop items! Let's just sit by the beach and work on our tan today, shall we? Marine Iguanas are one of the interesting species on #Galapagos, where Charles #Darwin began forming his theory of survival of the fittest and the adaptation of species. In fact, they are only found on the Galapagos Islands. These #fascinating #reptiles are huge, almost as long as my arm although I'm not that big, actually, I'm pretty tiny. Still, they are large lizards. They come in a #rainbow of colors, especially during mating season, when the males put on their best outfits to impress the girls. Marine Iguanas can swim better than #mermaids. They eat algae, preferring red algae when they can find it. They feed underwater, can dive down 65' for up to 30 minutes, and they sneeze out the excess salt ingested as they feed. Here's the craziest fact about Marine Iguanas: they have the incredible ability to SHRINK up to 20% of their body size when food is scarce, such as during El Nino. When El Nino moves out and algae returns, they regain their lost size. I love #traveling the world and seeing incredible animals. Learning about them and their habitat helps me bring them alive to you. I hope you'll have the chance to travel to see some of these treasures, and help protect them. Marine Iguanas face threats; they are only found on Galapagos, and disease, poaching, dogs and cats, or extreme weather could drive them to extinction. Learn how the Richard Mode used his voice to improve policies to make wildlife habitats better 🐟 Richard Mode was raised in North Carolina where he learned how to hunt duck and fish for trout as a boy. As a hunter and fisherman, he was taught to observe wildlife and their habits and as he got older he noticed an odd change in duck and trout patterns. Richard noticed bird migration patterns aren’t the same as what they used to be 30 years ago and as the river waters warm, the trout rivers he used to fish as a boy were no longer full of the vibrant fish. Richard cherished nature as he grew up with it, and wanted to do whatever he could to protect it… He decided to take a stand for these animals. Not having a voice of their own, Richard knew they couldn’t speak for themselves when it came to policy making. He joined the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), taking on roles as a Consultant to NWF and as an Outreach Coordinator. Richard used his new platform to advocate for robust public policies aimed at protecting and improving wildlife habitats. Richard has long been committed to ensuring that American hunters, anglers, and wildlife enthusiasts have a voice in public policy decisions, with the aim of safeguarding America's distinctive natural areas and wildlife resources. In his heart, he carried the image of the vibrant trout and the clear, flowing streams – a reminder of what he was striving to save, not just for the hunters and anglers of today, but for everyone who would come after him. Have you noticed any changes in the wildlife near where you live? Yes or No? In honor of the launch of our virtual baby shower, we will be covering some of our most asked BABY WILDLIFE questions! Recently we've been getting lots of messages regarding what to do if you find baby skunks, raccoons, bobcats & foxes. Southwest Wildlife currently works with all these animals if they are injured or abandoned as part of our rescue, rehab, and release program. Here are some tips to follow if you stumble upon some baby animals: 🦨 Safety first! Make sure to scan your surroundings for the babies parents. Keep your distance! Wild mothers can be protective if they see strangers near their babies. Wild animals can also carry certain diseases you do not want to be exposed to. Do not get close, feed, or handle the baby animals. This puts the babies and yourself in danger. 🦊 Take some time to observe the scene. If a baby animal or its parents have been hit by a car, attacked by a pet, or found in a trap, call us right away. If the babies appear to be resting peacefully, it's often the case their bellies are full and their caretaker will come back soon. Observe from a distance for 12-14 hours to see if the baby animals are truly abandoned. 🦝 Found an injured or abandoned baby animal? The most important thing you can do is get an expert involved. Baby wildlife requires extremely specialized care to survive. Give our 24/7 hotline a call at 480-433-5656. We can answer any baby wildlife questions you have as well as see if a rescue is needed! Please do NOT attempt to intervene yourself as it can harm the animal or cause them to become too friendly with humans. Check out our stories today for additional resources, and thank you for being an advocate for wildlife! #wildlifefact #wildlifeeducation #outdooreducation #wildlifeadvocate #coexist #coexistwithwildlife #babywildlife #babybobcat

In honor of the launch of our virtual baby shower, we will be covering some of our most asked BABY WILDLIFE questions! Recently we've been getting lots of messages regarding baby rabbits. Although Southwest Wildlife takes medium-large mammals only, we can still help answer your questions. Here are some tips to follow if you stumble upon a nest of baby bunnies: 🐇 If you don't see an adult rabbit caring for the babies, don't panic. Mother rabbits only visit the nest twice a day to avoid attracting predators. We recommend placing cotton string in an 'X' over the nest to see if it is moved after 12-24 hours. This will help you determine if the babies are truly abandoned. 🐇 If you find a nest that has been destroyed, you can move it or rebuild it in a safer area within 10 feet of its original location. Gather dried grasses and scoop out a similar shallow form in the earth. Gently move the displaced baby rabbits while wearing gloves - do not handle them longer than absolutely necessary as this can stress them out. 🐇 If you have determined the mother rabbit is no longer there to care for her offspring, it's time to call a local wildlife rehabber. If you are in AZ, we recommend our friends @libertywildlifeaz - they are the wild rabbit pros! Please - if you do find a nest of baby bunnies and they are happy & healthy, let them be! They only stay in their nest for about 3 weeks. Be a wildlife advocate and let them be wild 🐰💗 Do you have any other baby animal or baby rabbit questions? Ask them below, and check out our stories today for additional resources! #babybunnies #babyrabbit #wildrabbit #wildbunny #wildlifefact #wildlifeeducation #outdooreducation #wildlifeadvocate #coexist #coexistwithwildlife

Thanks to everyone that came out to our alpine ice fishing adventure with Region 1 @backcountryhuntersbc and @aficanada last Saturday. If you weren’t able to make it, we missed you, and you missed out! Any Backcountry adventure, should be approached with a safety first mentality. Considering the mild winter we have been experiencing, ice thickness was top of mind. Before heading out we had a team meeting and discussed such things as communication, communal equipment like first aid kit, rope, floatation device and who had first aid knowledge. Trail conditions and route were also discussed. After a beautiful hike in, we again met at the shore of lake Helen Mackenzie for a safety brief. With ice in his veins @natesbcadventures volunteered to auger the test holes. @dylan.unrau was close at hand with sled and floatation device. Our subject was tethered to shore at first, then we leap frogged from point of known safety, to point of known safety. Nate carried a metal auger extension to probe the ice as he moved out. Test holes were set with a deadfall branch to provide a visual marker for others. Once the ice was determined safe, we got our rods down and commenced fishing. Great conversation and much laughter, echoed around the lake that day. An already successful outing, was made even better by coaxing a couple of gorgeous little trout from the depths of the lake. Everyone agreed that we should definitely do it again next year! Hopefully you can join us. Happy #InternationalPolarBearDay! I was lucky enough to go on an expedition around Svalbard in June to see these incredible giants of the north. Watching them walk miles and miles on ice, hunting for seals, was mind-blowing. They are as at home in the water as they are on land, being powerful swimmers. We are losing polar bears at an alarming rate. Ice is melting earlier and forming later each year. Polar bears depend on ice to hunt; seals are their main diet. I feel so blessed to be able to photograph declining species of animals. At the same time, it makes me sad. Will my photo be the last of this particular animal? Will children a generation from now be able to see these apex hunters in the wild, or will zoos be their only experience? I always hope my photography inspires someone to go to see wildlife in its natural habitat, whether with me or someone else, before it's gone. #endangeredspecies #bear #polarbear #arctic #arcticcircle #expedition #expeditiontravel #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #photosafari #conservationphotography #conservation #photooftheday #wildlifeonearth #animaladdicts #naturelove #wildlifelove #loveanimals #wildlifeadvocate #advocacy

Do you have what it takes to become a wildlife advocate? (Hint: You do!) You can become a wildlife advocate in a few, easy steps and just in time for Oregon's legislative session: 🚨 Take action for wildlife with our Action Alerts! The strength of our work has always been our community. Your voice is necessary to protect wildlife and habitat, especially when pivotal bills are up for consideration during a legislative session. 🐦 Get to know the imperiled species that calls Oregon home! Our state hosts a diverse array of birds that are critical players of a healthy ecosystem. Keep an eye out for tomorrow for a quick rundown of the imperiled birds we work hard to protect. ⚠️ Practice bird-safety by preventing window strikes, going Lights Out, and keeping cats indoors! Nearly half of all window strikes happen at residential houses, and you can reduce these numbers by making your windows bird-safe. Going Lights Out with us and our partners @DarkSkyOregon also reduces light pollution which can confuse and exhaust birds while on their way towards important nesting or wintering grounds. And, if you have cats who crave outdoor time, you can keep both them and birds safe by creating their very own catio. We work with @feralcatsor to provide Catio Tours each year, which is a haven for catio inspiration. Tap our link in bio to take action now and learn more! 📷: A fledged Great Gray Owlet sits on the ground surrounded by tall grass. Graphic white text floats above the owlet. I went to #KrugerNationalPark on my very first trip to #SouthAfrica. Back then, #rhino filled the Park, and you could check the sightings boards to see where they had been recently spotted. I found the Three Amigos north of Satara in magical golden late afternoon light. What a thrill for someone who had never experienced #wildlife like this! I was immediately addicted and so began a love affair that has lasted over a decade with so many trips that I've lost count. Fast forward to today, 12 years later. I haven't seen rhino north of Satara in years. Gone are the big middens, the telltale sound of red-billed oxpeckers announcing a feast of flies and ticks, the lumbering gentle movement of rhino as they graze the sparse grasslands. #Poaching has decimated rhino numbers in the park. We no longer announce locations of rhino; I don't even mention the park in which I saw them, nor the country any more. When we do see rhino, they have usually been dehorned. It helps deter poaching a bit. We have to find a way to eliminate demand for wildlife parts. Having a piece of rhino horn to grate into your tea shouldn't be a status symbol. A lion's tooth shouldn't be jewelry. An elephant's #tusk shouldn't be an elegant, intricate, beautiful carving in a niche in your wall. Medicinal uses are dime-store hocus-pocus and a constant drain on wildlife numbers, but the big money is in the status symbols of the day--the ability of the rich to show how much cash they have to waste. Raising children to covet seeing these being in the wild is one answer. Creating shame around using wildlife parts as a symbol of wealth is another. Education about what constitutes real medicine is another key to the solution. What part can you play in the #conservation and #preservation of our wild treasures? Thanks for following me, and supporting my efforts at wildlife advocacy. Several weeks ago we shared some alarming info on the negative effects of using rodenticide to control your pest population. From animal poisoning to a potential link with mange, rodenticide use has no place in Arizona. But don't worry - we aren't expecting you to let rats live in your attic! Thankfully, there are alternatives. 1️⃣ Prevention is 🔑! Keep your space tidy - this means picking up trash, removing fallen fruit, and containing pet toys and food. Protect your home by sealing any gaps around pipes or roof access. Even fallen bird seed can attract rats! 2️⃣ Consider non-chemical alternatives: we get it - sometimes a rat needs to go. The most humane option is an electric rat trap. Talk to your pest control company and educate yourself on their different methods. Feel confident telling them that poisoning the rats is NOT an option for you! 3️⃣ Consider natural pest control! Listen to what one of our volunteer vet's has to say: “Anything living in an ecosystem has its place, It’s very essential to have apex and lower predators to control vermin and rodent populations. So, I don’t view them as a nuisance. For the ecosystem to remain stable, there has to be a balance.” Questions? Drop them below ⬇️ Save & share this to spread the word on alternatives to rodenticide. #wildlifeeducation #outdooreducation #householdmaintenance #homemaintenance #wildlifeadvocate #coexist #coexistwithwildlife

CWD test results for the Kootenay Region are 85% (726/850) complete. Province wide test results are 78% (832/1066) complete. There is no direct evidence that CWD can be transmitted to humans and there have been no reports of the disease in humans. However, to prevent potential risk of transmission or illness, it is recommended that people do not eat meat or other parts of an animal infected with CWD. Cooking temperatures are not able to destroy the abnormal protein or prion that causes CWD. Hunting is considered the most important tool in managing CWD. The recommendation from CWD experts is to remove animals that are most likely to be infected to reduce disease transmission. This can be achieved through harvest management and/or targeted removals. Harvest management and other tools such as carcass transport restrictions, disposal requirements are being considered for the 2024 hunting season. . . . . . . #cwd #cronicwastingdisease #bc #bcbackcountryhuntersandanglers #bcbha #backcountryhuntersandanglers #bha #wildlifeadvocate #conservation #wildlifemanagement

Our BC Chapter has requested an Environmental Impact Assessment of the Zincton All-Season Resort development proposal. We believe the potential development will significantly contribute to the cumulative effects on an already heavily impacted landscape and will reduce the amount of suitable and usable habitat for sensitive wildlife, create further connectivity issues, and increase stress on wildlife populations. CWD has been confirmed in two deer samples from the Kootenay Region. Both cases were identified in the area south of Cranbrook. The first sample was from a male mule deer that was harvested in Wildlife Management Unit 4-3. The animal appeared to be in good condition and was submitted to the B.C. CWD Program for testing. The second sample was from a road killed animal. A female white-tailed deer that was collected in Wildlife Management Unit 4-4, and was submitted to the B.C. CWD Program for testing. The diagnosis was confirmed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency reference laboratory on January 31, 2024. Please take 30 seconds out of your day and head to the badger trust website to sign their petition to end the cull. Help us save this iconic British wildlife! The UK government says the badger cull is a cornerstone of their policy to stop the spread of bTB. Yet cattle spread over 94% of bTB, so why blame badgers? Especially when every cow killed due to bTB has tested positive for the disease, and no one ever tests a badger.    Cattle measures are the best way to control bTB: enhanced biosecurity, better cattle testing, and an effective cattle vaccine. Wales and Scotland do not cull badgers and have more success reducing bTB in cattle than England. Solutions to bTB should be based on science, cost and animal welfare grounds. The badger cull fails on all of these. The badger cull is an unnecessary and wasteful policy – a national wildlife tragedy at a time of critical nature depletion. We need to End The Cull.
