Our Sea Turtle Conservation Program volunteers greeted the sun early this morning as they began their first daily morning patrol on Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key, looking for nesting and other turtle activity occurring overnight. Our photo above shows tracks from a previous sea turtle nest, but we're hoping for a busy season this year! 🏖 Remember to #SharetheBeach! Summer is a busy tourist season, and big crowds can have significant impacts on sea turtles, shorebirds, and other coastal wildlife. Help protect our coastal wildlife by remembering: - Lights Out: Bright lights can disturb nesting sea turtles and disorient adults and hatchlings on the beach. When visiting the beach after dark, keep cell phones and flashlights off. Instead, use a red flashlight or no light at all! For beachfront homes, turn off exterior lights when not in use and keep blinds and curtains shut after sunset. - Leave Only Footprints: Help keep the beaches obstacle-free for nesting and hatchling turtles. All personal items, including chairs, tents, umbrellas, toys, and water equipment, must be removed from the beach by sunset each day. Make sure to fill in holes and flatten any sandcastles. - Share the Beach: Stay out of posted nesting areas and avoid setting up belongings on the edges of marked areas. Avoid disturbing birds resting on the beach; if you see a nesting sea turtle, give it space! Do not handle sea turtle or shorebird eggs and hatchlings. Attention all beachfront residents/renters/visitors: we would like to shed some light on sea turtle navigation! Artificial white light can disorient nesting moms, as well as hatchlings trying to find their way to the ocean. You can make your beach front home sea turtle friendly by installing amber/red light bulbs, or by simply turning off outside lights from May 1 to October 15! Take it one step further by closing your blinds or shading your inside lights. Remember our first tip? Sea turtles dig the dark! Filling in holes and taking all trash/gear off the beach creates a safe environment that keeps not only our turtles safe, but also our Sea Turtle Protection Team. It’s our duty as residents and visitors to keep the beach wildlife safe! Did you know that sea turtles are sensitive to most of the visible light spectrum? Artificial light can cause both nesting moms & hatchlings to become disoriented on the beach, but they are least sensitive to the long wavelengths of red light. That's why only red light is allowed for navigating BHI beaches at night! If you happen to see a nesting mom or hatchling, it’s important to turn off ALL lights (yes, even red!). The use of red light around sea turtles is only allowed if permitted, so you may see our Sea Turtle Protection Team (STPT) using red light while tagging & collecting data on nesting moms. This is especially important since turtles can have PIT research tags under their skin that you can’t see and can only be read with a scanner. Never push a stranded turtle back into water— there may be internal injuries! “Why do I need to tell anyone? Is it really that important? Don’t animals naturally pass away?” Of course they naturally get hurt or pass, but sea creatures face more obstacles now than they would ever naturally have dealt with before, therefore strandings are a great opportunity to get a glimpse into the current health of our sea turtles. Necropsies are especially helpful in determining if foul play or human-induced environmental factors are causing harm, and catching this early on can help prevent a small problem from getting out of control and affecting even more turtles in the long run. This is important information for federal agencies to collect so that we’re able to keep ourselves and the public updated on the health and status of our wild sea turtle populations! 🐢 Some simple everyday things we can do to help are: 1. 🐢 #TurtleTalk: Escambia County staff and volunteers dedicated thousands of hours this year to monitoring and protecting sea turtles and their nests on Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key, along with educating the community about how they can help protect sea turtles on local beaches. In total, volunteers contributed more than 1,600 hours toward conducting marine turtle nesting surveys and monitoring activities in Escambia County during the 2023 sea turtle nesting season, not counting additional hours from Escambia County Natural Resources Management and Marine Resources staff. 💚 This year, Escambia County recorded 13 loggerhead turtle nests and one green turtle nest on Pensacola Beach, along with two loggerhead turtle nests on Perdido Key. Sea turtles waddled their way to a banner year in Coastal Georgia, as the 2023 season which ended Tuesday saw an estimated 159,143 hatchlings emerge from 3,479 nests. Although down from 2022's record high of roughly 266,452 hatchlings and 4,089 nests, this year's count marked a “much more successful year than expected,” according to Georgia Sea Turtle Research Manager David Zailo. “It just shows to me that dedicated long-term conservation and management actions can pay off,” Zailo said, attributing the species' success to work that began more than 30 years ago. “We're not approaching historic levels yet. We likely won't for another 15 or 20 years, according to some demographic models.
