Another experiment with video-tapping a Super 8 camera. Picked up a small light (ie: cheap) security camera that fits right inside the eyepiece, and stays wedged in the rubber without any other need of support. Not exactly a spy camera (although ironically that is how it is advertised) but more than sufficient for setting up a dolly shot and making sure that everything is in-frame. (As long as you don't have to focus-pull!) Panther Pictures, LLC, has plans to film a feature on #Super8 #Kodak film in 2024. To that end, we have been testing procedures, workflows, and equipment. Our #Beaulieu #4008ZM is the only Beaulieu in our inventory that wasn't serviced by Filmkonsult Sweden, but it has a good lens and was lubricated and inspected by us in-house. We included the camera in our test roll (see previous Instagram reels) but it didn't grab the sprockets so was effectively skipped. We've tested it again to see if that was a fluke due to swapping the reel from camera to camera, or if there are larger issues in play. Taking an unopened old Kodachrome reel and putting it into the camera, we ran some test footage (that may never be seen, the Kodachrome process was retired in 2011) simply to test the mechanics. Marking the reel, we can see that it was moving inside, and it did move the film all the way to the end, revealing the "exposed" tag. That would indicate that the previous roll was a fluke, except that it is well known that old Kodachrome was extremely thin, and the new negative films are a little thicker and therefore a little heavier. So it's possible that this unserviced Beaulieu simply doesn't have a motor strong enough to pull the newer film stocks. Picked up some 1964 Turbo heads earlier this year (pictures 1 and 2), thinking I could make them work on a 1967 110 engine. Knowledgeable readers will know, that isn't the case. So I needed to replace them, for cheap. Many thanks to Bill Slusher, of London, Kentucky, for offering to trade them straight across for some 1965 110 heads (pictures 3 and 4). He needed 1964 Turbos for his own project. He truly made me a heck of a deal, because while both of our Corvair parts were intact, his were in much better condition. Now, Bill's heads will ship off to Ken Hand at Handy Car Care to be inspected and improved from a much better starting point. While changing the oil on the "Bluejay," 1967 Monza Convertible, I took a close look at the belt. It was nice and new, but clearly not stock. Too wide for the pulleys, and therefore riding too high. See the pictures showing the before/after on top and bottom. Fortunately, I always keep a spare Gates 3V560 belt handy. And a couple of 9/16 wrenches. When people say Corvairs always throw their belts, I say, no, YOUR Corvair always throws its belt, because you're using the wrong belt! Say it with me: 3V560. The right belt for a Chevy Corvair in any year is a Gates 3V560. Well, got it in the air, and as suspected it was just one valve at issue. Uneven wear on the valve snapped the stud nut (see comparison of good nuts on stud, and broken nut in pan.) According to Lenny, of "Frazier Repair," the initial compression test yielded 60psi from all three cylinders on that side, but it went up after the repairs--thankfully I had two extra studs with their nuts from the Bluvair engine rebuild. The valve was freely moving enough to leave in; Lenny didn't want to disturb it too much, so he didn't replace the spring, which still had good tension. New stud nut, push rod, ball, and rocker arm. decided to take the new 67 Convertible out to Blanchard, North Dakota, and the KVLY-TV Antenna Mast. It's a sky-high radio mast that is the tallest structure in the Western Hemisphere, and formerly the tallest in the world, 50 miles away. It's also the furthest I have yet driven this car. We stopped to use the restroom at a converted schoolhouse in Blanchard before continuing to the tower. After that, we didn't get far before the engine started popping out of the driver's side carburetor. See video in this post. I immediately turned back and went to the schoolhouse again. It looked like the crossover tube had come out of the left side carb so I tightened it down and tried running the car again. In summary, it was a two day ordeal waiting for AAA to come get us. There have been several theories offered regarding the cause: Bad carb, valves set too tight, a burnt valve, a broken exhaust rocker; mostly everything to do with valves or springs or pushrods. Does anybody have any other ideas? Offer them now while you can make uninformed decisions! New suspension and steering modifications are in, and the Bluvair is back on the ground. Changes include a new back end, shorter springs all around, quick steering arms and a vibration damper. Yesterday was last warm day of the season (so they say) so I took one last drive. Went out to another place I've never been, Fergus Falls and the I-94 Speedway. There was nobody there, of course, and the gates were all locked up, but it turns out there is an industrial entrance--unpaved, unfenced, and unguarded!
