Colorado, Explored two national parks (Rocky Mountains and Meza), both different but equally beautiful! The Rocky Mountains had a variety of hikes, lakes, and view points. Meza has so much history and being able to witness it in person was an experience. I was able to see one of my favorite photographers work (Ansel Adams) in person and the best part I was able to go to a few of the locations he shot that changed the photography and environment world! This next part at Lake Mead was my favorite. The funny thing is, we had planned to just do a small hike (the one I shared already) and then get back on the road and keep going but we decided we'd walk along this trail just for a little bit before we left. Well, we ended up enjoying it so much that we stayed on it for a long time and ended up walking a little over 4 miles! haha! It was an absolutely beautiful day and the views from this trail were phenomenal. Plus the trail itself was super cool because it used to be a train route with railroad tracks so there were informational signs along the way pointing things out from how things were long ago and it was really interesting. The tunnels that had been dug out for the train were cool to walk through and also provided some awesome views. :) This trail actually goes all the way to the Hoover Dam but since we'd been to the dam before, plus the fact that this wasn't our first hike of the day, we decided not to do the whole thing and we turned around to head back at the half way point. Doing an 8 mile hike after already hiking in the morning and knowing it was already getting later in the afternoon made us say half was enough. lol! Day hikes take all day, right? Yesterday’s 43-mile day hike: Precipice Lake. This lake knocked it out of the park in every way possible. Incredible blue water of exceptional clarity, huge cliffs that were bigger than I expected, waterfalls cascading directly into the lake. What a spot, I can’t believe I got to visit it in person and enjoy the epic High Sierra Trail along the way! Experiencing this Yosemite sunrise with my closest high school friends during our post-graduation roadtrip is one of my favorite outdoor memories. If you ever want to do a short easy hike with lots of history, I recommend visiting the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. There are several monuments throughout as well as visible earthworks. The Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, fought from May 8 to May 21, 1864, in Virginia, was a significant engagement during the American Civil War. It was part of Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The battle was characterized by intense fighting, particularly around a Confederate defensive position known as the "Mule Shoe." The fighting was brutal, with both sides suffering heavy casualties, totaling around 27,000 to 32,000. Despite the ferocity of the combat, neither side achieved a decisive victory. The Spotsylvania Court House Historic District, encompassing the battlefield area, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. In addition, the property became part of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park in 1927. May is a great month to visit Zion National Park. I recommend planning your visit before Memorial Day weekend as this is very the park starts to get really crowded. Mid-May offers beautiful weather for some amazing hikes and scenery. However, the Narrows is most likely not open during this time, so plan accordingly, based on your desired activities. National Parks are the places where many of us first fell in love with the outdoors. Within their protected borders, we camped, we swam, we complained bitterly about being dragged up mountains, we grudgingly came to realise that it was fun. There was an earthiness to most of those trips, a sense of challenging yourself against the landscape, meeting wind and rain head on. And waiting at the end of those days? A decent roll mat, if you were lucky. Certainly nothing like this. Sunrise in Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley This will forever be one of my favorite sunrises. Driving through the windy roads of the park in the darkness was quite nerve wracking. But once we started walking out onto the dunes, I knew it was going to be a special one. The clouds lit up in all the colors, which casted a tint onto the dunes.
