I recently visited the renewed Tower of David Museum. It is, without doubt, the most underrated monument of Jerusalem. I really enjoyed the cool spaces in the blistering heat and the new exhibits. But the most impressive is the new model of the second temple, built by Herod. Here you can see 1. A look at the Temple from the east. 2. Day 24 continued Davidson Center and Southern Steps The last of our stops was the Davidson Center where we looked at a Mikva’ot or a mikveh and talked about the process the rabbis used for ritual purity. We visited the southern steps again and talked about the various Jewish sects and how they responded to Hellenism. We focused a lot on the Sadducees which accommodated Hellenism because it benefited them. I didn’t take a ton of pics since I’d been here before but I did take a pic in front of the stone at the base so you can see to scale the size of some of the stones. We spent the afternoon in the classroom marking out the various districts during Jesus’ time on one map. The other map we marked districts and specific routes Jesus traveled in the gospels. Last night Danielle and I walked in the new city a bit and went to dinner at a rooftop restaurant called Notre Dame which is in a hotel that looks like a castle. It was an amazing place with great food and a beautiful view of the Mount of Olives. It seemed pretty fancy but the food was so inexpensive compared to in the states. I ordered a Mezze platter for dinner which I assumed was the two person appetizer which was the normal price of one entree. The waiter charged me for only a one person platter so I’m assuming the two person one would have been huge! It was way too much food for me to eat and it was the equivalent of $12 in the U.S. We had a lot of fun. It’s the first time I’ve really gone out at night since most mornings we had to be up so early. In Jerusalem we went to the Mount of Olives, Hezekiah's Tunnel, the Pool of Siloam, Pilgrim Road, the Western Wall, the Temple Mount, the Southern Steps and the Garden Tomb. #1 On the Mount of Olives. You can see the Temple Mount in the background. #2 Pool of Siloam after coming out of Hezekiah's Tunnel (which is the only thing not in order) #3 This is Pilgrim Road. They dug below ground and found these steps and these are the exact steps that Jesus would have walked on in Jerusalem. #4 The Western Wall. #5 The Temple Mount #6 On the hill in this picture would be the general area of the Garden of Gethsemane which was where Jesus was arrested. #7 These are the Southern Steps. Day 4 Jerusalem Old City New Testament Walks We began our day on the outside of the Old City Wall looking at remnants from the stairs that led up to Herod’s palace and a possible alternative route Jesus’ may have walked before being crucified. We walked what would have been the northernmost part of the city during Jesus’ day and visited the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and viewed a 2nd temple period tomb. We walked the Via Dolorosa and out Lions Gate and towards the East Gate where many Muslim graves are facing. Then we made our way to the southern part of the Western wall to view the destruction of the pilgrimage road that happened in 70 A.D. we also reviewed what the structure would have looked like before then. We visited the southern steps and listened to a lecture on the practices of rabbis in Jesus’ Day and read some passages. We then headed back for time in the classroom for some map marking and study preparation for the days following. We finished the day with a tunnel walk under the western wall where there used to be an aqueduct. The Southern Steps of Jerusalem are a remarkable reminder of the immense historical significance this site holds. It was here that so much of our Lord Jesus’s ministry happened, including his entrance to the Temple and his sending of a man to be healed at the Pool of Siloam (John 9:7). What’s more, it was here that Pentecost began–as described in Acts 2. We can feel our Savior’s presence as we stand on these steps, for they evoke memories of him walking these very same paths centuries ago. Moreover, by exploring the area around the Temple Mount during this tour, we can further envision what life must have been like for Jesus during his time on Earth. When reflecting upon these ancient steps during our tour this October, let us remember God’s faithfulness in every detail—no matter how small—of our Lord Jesus's earthly journey (Psalms 107:1). May these reminders be enough to strengthen our faith. I have been back from Israel for almost 4 weeks now, and I wake up every morning longing to go back! 🇮🇱 What a morning this was! There is nothing like starting your day worshipping, praying, and learning from Dr. Howard on the Southern Steps. The Southern Steps are the steps Jesus would have climbed often to reach the temple entrance. On these very steps, the "teaching steps," Jesus and other rabbis would have taught from the top of these steps, directly in front of the Temple gates. During the time of Christ, these steps were the only way to reach the gate of the Temple Mount. Next, we visited the Western Wall, known as the Kotel in Hebrew. Since the Jewish are taught that prayers ascend to God in heaven from Jerusalem, and the Western Wall is the most holy place on the Temple Mount accessible to Jewish people, the wall has been the foremost site for prayer of Jewish people for centuries from all over the world. As Christians, we know that no matter where we are in the world, our prayers go directly to God through Christs' death & resurrection. We do not need a pope, rabbi, wall, etc, to pray (simply have a conversation) directly with God. 🙏 But when in Rome, I mean Jerusalem, you pray at the Western Wall. 😉 Let me tell you, it is powerful!! You can feel the power of the Holy Spirit when you touch the wall...at least I did! 🔌 Our next stop was the Pool of Bethesda. One of the most famous of Jesus’ miracles is recounted in the Gospel of John (my personal favorite Gospel), where Jesus heals the paralytic at the Bethesda Pool (John 5:2-9). Every time I think of Jesus saying to the paralytic, "Rise, take up your bed and walk," it brings tears to my eyes. It still baffles me that we have that same power living inside of us! I also love that Jesus healed this man on the Sabbath, the day "man" says no work should be performed. A couple of weeks ago my family and I had the privilege and blessing to embark on a two week pilgrimage through the Holy Land. On this track, we explored all the historical places in the Bible from the gospels and the time of Jesus to visiting the earliest archeology of the Old Testament dating back to Moses and Abraham. On this trip, we not only saw Biblical events through different eyes, but got to take the same track the Israelites took to find the prosperous land flowing with milk and honey, now for all nations to see. We met amazing people that have become our family on this trip and have grown closer to Christ, experiencing the man He was on earth and the salvation He gave for all. The Southern Steps or the “Teaching Stairs” were one of the main entrances to the Temple Mount from the south and a place that rabbis taught. It would have been a place where Jesus walked and also taught His disciples. Day 3!!! Somehow I didn’t take many pictures for Day 3 but here is a few I did get :) - Valley of Elah: best known as the scene of the battle between young David and the giant Goliath. The brook of Elah, which lies in the heart of the valley, is a seasonal creek that runs dry in the summer months. Here, from this brook, David chose five smooth stones in preparation for battle. - Bethlehem: David, the man after God’s own heart, was born in Bethlehem and anointed here in Bethlehem by Samuel as king of Israel. He was called from tending flocks of sheep to shepherding an entire nation. These same hills that David spent his childhood raising sheep that would be sacrificed in the Temple would be the same hills that Jesus – the ultimate Sacrificial Lamb – would be born. In fulfillment with the prophecy of Micha 5:2, Jesus was born in the “house of bread” known as Bethlehem and would become the Bread of Life for all humanity. Today, Bethlehem is a Palestinian city located in the West Bank and is home to about 25,000 people. The current majority of the city is Muslim, but it also is home to a significant Palestinian Christian community. - Worship at the Southern Steps: I had the amazing opportunity to have a night filled with worship in Jerusalem! This is where the first Christians were baptized. On Pentecost, Acts tells us that the apostles were in “the house” when the Holy Spirit descended upon them. Often we imagine “the house” to be a room in a home somewhere in Jerusalem. But “house” was the term commonly used to refer to the temple. They were in the temple celebrating Shavuot (what we call Pentecost). After the Spirit descended upon them, and after Peter’s speech testifying about Jesus, Luke tells us that 3,000 people were baptized that day. Where do you baptize 3,000 people in Jerusalem? Well, just outside of the temple, there were dozens of mikveh, ritual baths that people would use to ceremonially cleanse themselves before entering the temple. As people accepted Christ, they would have easily been able to walk just outside of the temple and enter into these baths to receive their baptism. When you see locations like these, suddenly the Bible becomes more than just a story of events that happened to people long ago. You enter into that story. The scriptures come alive in a new way. We were at the end of our journey. We arrived at the Temple, this place where Jesus had walked, both as a boy and man. He taught here. We entered through the Huldah Gates. Yes. These gates are named for a woman. A prophetess of the Living God. In our current world where women in the Church are mostly sidelined, Huldah has her own gates. We sat on The Southern Steps. Looking up I saw birds and Psalm 84 came back full circle. “How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies. I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord. With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God.” “Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God! What joy for those who can live in your house, always singing your praises. What joy for those whose strength comes from the Lord, who have set their minds on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.” Lucky birds. They nest inside the Temple and get to stay. Just like the priests they get to be there all day and all night. While pilgrims are still traveling, the sparrow has made a home. I just kept staring at those birds. Once people get to the Temple there might be shouts of joy and celebration or maybe a silence of awe. Either way, it’s is about the Presence. It’s always about the Presence. The outward, physical journey was not the ultimate goal - though I was dressed for it! And really, it was not the steps I took with my feet that demanded the most strength, it was the steps taken within my heart. So what happens when the caravan returns home? I would say just like any great experience, while the memories are marvel-ous, the feelings can’t help but fade. However. Because of His Everlasting Presence the joy and the awe continues...in a new way…in a different way…in a greater way. With a deeper understanding of what it means to belong to God, to be one of his people, and to be part of his unfolding story of eternity…I am forever changed. #israel #southernsteps #foreverchanged

Our Jordan-Israel Signature Tour’s last day in Jerusalem was amazing! 📍The Southern Steps of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, where Jesus’ feet (and those of his family and disciples) actually walked. Throngs of people approached the Temple on these steps during the three pilgrimage festivals of Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot. 👣🇮🇱 • The Southern Wall is 922’ in length. The broad staircase was 200+ feet wide. 👈🏻😯 • The risers were intentionally made low (7-10” high) and deep (12-35”), forcing careful and deliberate approach to the Temple 🕍 🕎 • Pilgrims entered the temple area through the double gates and triple gates still visible, though sealed. These gates together are known as the Hulda Gates after the prophetess Hulda 👩🏻 📣 • As over 50 ritual baths (mikvaot) have been found in the vicinity so far, this area was no doubt the busiest! 🛁 💦 • Rabbis and teachers used this area as a platform to teach their doctrines to passing multitudes. Pentecost (Acts 2) is believed to have occurred at these steps, and the baptisms of the 3,000 coverts in the ritual baths nearby. in our small group “Jesus and Women” study, Kristi asked us to close our eyes and think back to a time in our life that brought us the most shame. My heart ached as my thoughts went to straight to that life altering moment in my life. I’m sure you also have moments and choices in your story you regret and wish you could delete and make it disappear. We all do. In John 7:53-8:11, we learn about a woman who has been caught in the act of adultery, probably one of the worst mistakes she ever made in her life. I am fairly confident she regretted her choices and desperately wished she could have made that mistake disappear. Pharisees took her to the Southern Steps at the Temple for her punishment according to the law in Leviticus 20:10, which clearly says she should have been killed for what she’d done. Can you imagine what she must have been thinking while being publicly humiliated and waiting for her fatal punishment? Her family? Her friends? Her children? The Pharisees were honestly not concerned with the law being broken, because where was the man? They would have brought the man involved in the act of adultery too, if they were concerned. They were trying to trap Jesus in a public moment with lots of people around. The first time Jesus wrote in the sand. Jesus next words were about who would stone the woman.. Jesus said the ones among them without sin should be the first to throw a stone at her. Jesus truly saved her life. Jesus shifted their wrath off the women onto him. #southernsteps #israel #holyland

Jerusalem! 🇮🇱 So much was packed into one day that I don't think Instagram will let me share everything! But we saw a whole lot in and around the Jerusalem city walls: Mount of Olives, Garden of Gethsemane, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Western Wall AND the Southern and Eastern Walls, Via Dela Rosa, Bethsaida, and shopping in the market stalls, just to name a few. After a final dinner, we met our midnight departure and flew back to the states. As of this writing, I'm waiting for two more connections during a day that's literally 34 hours. 🇮🇱 I S R A E L 🇮🇱 Happy Palm Sunday!!! Today started out by hanging with Col. Dany Tirza who built Israel’s security fence and learned about the history of Israel & the Palestinians. We visited the City of David and the active archaeological dig which is amazing! We visited the Southern Steps of the Temple Mount where Jesus would of walked 🤯 We then visited the Old City of Jerusalem and explored the Jewish Quarter which was fun! We went to visit Udi Merioz at the Blue & White Art Gallery who is an amazing artist in the area. Then we ended the day at the beautiful Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of two possible sites for the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus! “The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. The southern steps of Temple Mount were for sure, the steps Jesus would have walked on. Probably where He as a 12 years old listened & questioned the teachers Luke 2:46 and where He would have taught Luke 21:37-38 We walked and sat at where Jesus would have sat! I can totally relate to Neil Armstrong when he visited here in 1994. Armstrong bent down and kissed the ground, saying that this was an even more exciting moment for him than walking on the moon. Did you know the steps are not even for a reason? This is so, one has to look down to take each step safely. Hence bowing one's head to walk up to the Temple. We prayed at the Wailing Wall or Western Wall and followed custom of inserting wishes or prayer slips in the cracks of the wall. As the Temple Mount platform is now the site of a Muslim mosque, this section of wall is considered the most holiest place as it was the closest to the Holy of Holies. We had the opportunity to tour what archeologists have uncovered of this wall underground through years of excavation, walking through areas of this original, unrestored site that dates back to the 1st century AD We also visited the Church of St Peter which is over the said site of the High Priest Caiaphas’ house where Jesus was interrogated and held in the lower level cistern after being arrested at the Garden of Gethesemane – Matthew 26:57 It was here where Peter denied Jesus 3 times - Matthew 26:58, 69-75 Have a blessed weekend ➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️➿️ . . . #southernsteps #closetojesus #walkinlove #ibelieveinhim #heismyfather #spreadthewordofgod #traveljournal #tellmystory
