Laxdale Primary School Wins Litter Picking Prize Laxdale Primary School have been crowned Highlands and Islands champion in a litter picking competition for young people across Scotland. Environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful, hosts a ‘litter league’, which is an initiative aimed at getting children and young people more involved with cleaning up litter across the country. The competition sees almost 6,000 pupils take part in it across the country. The competition formed part of the charity’s annual #SpringCleanScotland challenge and 5,864 young people, supported by more than 1,000 adults, across primary and secondary schools, affiliated and unaffiliated youth groups, families and colleges took part. In total, 185 clean ups were completed across 30 local authority areas. Laxdale Primary School managed to win the top prize after collecting 29 bags of litter during three litter picks. Barry Fisher, Chief Executive at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “After such an amazing first year of our Litter League competition, I’m thrilled to see even more young people across Scotland getting involved this time around.” “We’re still finalising our total number for this year’s #SpringCleanScotland but we’ve comfortably surpassed 40,000, beating last year’s total of dedicated litter picking volunteers by more than 10,000, and the Litter League has proven once again that people of all ages are passionate about tackling Scotland’s litter emergency.” To find out more about Keep Scotland Beautiful, visit their website here: https://www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/

A HUGE thanks to the 19 volunteers who cleared 29.83 kgs of litter from Mineralwell Park this beautiful and sunny morning on our clean with @pawsonplastic & stonehaven parkrun🌟 Most of this was removed around the Astro area but the roadsides & hill were also full of litter and many comprised plastic bottles and cans, all of which could have been deposited in bins or have been completely avoided by use of reusable bottles. At the very least they could have been put in bins. Most of the other litter was food related packaging. Full break down is - 182 plastic bottles 24 food containers 8 vapes 73 cans 12 glass beer bottles 1 glass vodka bottle 3 reusable water bottles 2 metal bars, 1 football, 1 hat, 1 school shirt, 1 Kessock Park Thistle football top, an umbrella, a cigarette lighter, 1 glass, 1 tetra pack container, 1 tube of toothpaste, 1 aerosol deodorant. All data will be submitted to Keep Scotland Beautiful @ksbscotland for the #SpringCleanScotland campaign which ends on Tuesday. Well done to our awesome Stonehaven Explorer Scouts & leaders who cleared 4.36 kgs of waste from Forest Park and the neighbouring streets on Monday night. Scouts logged what they picked up in a litter survey which will be submitted as part of Keep Scotland Beautiful’s #SpringCleanScotland campaign which runs until the end of April. Starting on 21 April, we’ll be litter picking around four Lidl stores across the city, helping to address Scotland’s litter emergency and do our part to #KeepScotlandBeautiful. Our Scottish Litter Survey found that 90% of people agree that litter is a problem across the country. VisitScotland have been encouraging staff to get out and do their bit for the @ksbscotland 2024 #SpringCleanScotland campaign. We were delighted to be invited by Helen from @VisitScotland to join her and her son to do a litter pick in Cullen. We litter picked a 200m section of hedgerow and fencing above the playpark and football pitch. It is an exposed, and windswept location and the rubbish gets caught in the hedge and fencing. We couldn’t believe how much we collected and what a difference it has made. Discover Cullen organises regular Cullen beach cleans using equipment kindly donated by the Marine Conservation Society. We are just planning the dates for future beach cleans and will announce this shortly. #LittlePick

First litterpick of the season 🤯 Positives: A fabulous turn out of the very best of people, weather bright and dry during the litterpick and an enormous haul of bags of rubbish and other detritus, cleared during the session 😭. 🤩Volunteers came from Crianlarich, Glen Orchy, Killin, Aberfolye, Stirling, Fort William, Perth and East Kilbride, including @ourspectrumadventures Our who broke off from their Speyside Way walk to Meet Up, Clean Up and Eat Up🐟🍟 Negative: The absolute state of the road side and lay-bys😱 There was general agreement it was worse than ever.😫 See the photos and judge for yourself. To be honest, we felt very proud of the effort on Sunday and that our wee business can and does facilitate these events. This is our fourth year of litterpicking and we’ve collected over 5 tonnes now. It demonstrated the positive difference people power can make (especially when they’re fuelled on Fish & Chips!) and it was so uplifting to see the young and old(er) all working together to achieve almost 1 tonne of litter in 57 sacks gathered. We’ll be out again in force on Sunday 19 May 11.00-13.00 and then the last Sunday of each month from June - October. All welcome, just register for free via the link in our bio 🙏. Stars every one!! 🌟 The community support for these Plastic Free Stonehaven & Paws on Plastic cleans is truly inspiring- we love seeing so many people of all ages (including babes in arms!) turn out and have fun. This clean is recorded as an event as part of Keep Scotland Beautiful’s @ksbscotland national #SpringCleanScotland campaign which runs until the end of April. Our random finds today included a large battery, a fish hook, some Lego, tennis balls, large lengths of rusted metal, half a hard hat, masses of textile fragments, nerf gun pellets, slivers of white plastic cups and some vapes. A huge thanks to all both our regulars and first timers, including several of 1st Stonehaven Beavers. We actually ran out of our Beach Clean Reward Cards as we had so many young volunteers!! We will be well stocked next time & have a range of stampers to record everyone’s efforts. We have joked about making a car out of all the parts we find and today we managed it!
