Pibroch – Reflections for a Future Dance is part of Climate Week North-East 24 @nescanhub The event is being hosted at Fittie Community Hall tomorrow, 21st March, 7-9pm Pibroch is a spoken word show written and performed by John Bollard. It explored parallels between the Climate Emergency and the Piper Alpha Disaster in 1988, using words, music and striking visual imagery to express the personal and social experience of Piper Alpha survivors and explore the challenges each of us faces in a warming world. Reflections for a Future Dance is a distillation of experiences from the 2023 Pibroch tour, using previous audience feedback, visuals, music and spoken word as a basis of conversation and inspiration for further meaningful interventions in the Climate Emergency. There will be new poetry, new ideas and the beginning of a new conversation.... or perhaps a dance. Tickets are free, but please book! For Climate Week North East, there will be a series of lunchtime talks on sustainable healthcare in a collaboration between @UniofAberdeen, @NHS_Grampian and Climate Week North East. 🌱Monday 12-1pm: Dr Rory Gibson Medical Education Fellow in Sustainable Healthcare Education working in NHS Highland will discuss the intersection of issues relating to environmental sustainability with other major issues facing the health service, and health education. 🌱Tuesday 12-1pm: Dr Sandeep Siddhi, Gastroenterology Consultant at ARI, British Society of Gastroenterology Sustainability Lead and Green Champion will talk about the pillars of sustainable healthcare in relation to Green Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Care. 🌱Wednesday 1-2pm: Dr Debjani Sarkar, Sustainability Support Officer for NHS Grampian, and Rachel Roberts, Environmental Manager for NHS Grampian, will provide an update on Sustainability progress in NHS Grampian with a focus on improvements in biodiversity on the ARI site. 🌱Thursday 12-1pm: Dr Deepa Shah is a General Practitioner in Shetland and chair of the North-East Scotland Greener Practice Network and will present on several Green initiatives being implemented by GPs as part of the North-East Greener Practice Network such as sustainable inhaler prescribing, de-prescribing and nature prescribing. 🌱Friday 12-1pm: Rowett's own Prof Alex Johnstone, leading innovative researcher within the field of human appetite control, will discuss how healthcare practitioners can support patients in adopting and maintaining a sustainable and healthy diet. I collaborated with @puppetcause_debby_forsyth on the sculptures. We explored the limits and opportunities of sustainability whilst merging our individual art practices. For each of our respective artworks we sculpted at least one part from clay. While Debby mainly went on to use paper and fabric for her pieces, I selected (drift)wood to create my sculptures. Throughout this week we have shared ways that we can cut down on single use plastics in our homes. One local business which has taken action is Fountainhall Wines. @fountainhallwines We are delighted to hear from owner, Steve McQueen: “I try to push customers more & more to take one of our cardboard boxes instead of plastic bags, constantly asking "Do you want a box?" or "I don't need to charge you anything for a box." With our shipping we bought a cardboard shredder to be able to make our packaging material & not have to use packing peanuts. Any bubble wrap we get in deliveries from our own suppliers we'll reuse. I’m thankful the industry has got rid of plastic rings for holding beer cans too & switched to cardboard.’ Such fab tips which really make a huge difference in reducing single use plastics use by the business and customers while also reducing packaging costs. A visit to the “Oor Monsters” exhibition at Aberdeen’s Music Hall for Climate Week North East. The exhibition explores the key issues around climate change, using recycled, found or donated materials. Many pieces of artwork in this exhibition are interactive. Each issue is represented as a "two headed monster"- An established "old way" of doing things, and a potential, ecological solution. The areas explored are: land use, energy creation, consumerism, consumption, travel, insulation, waste management and money. ISA takes on Climate Week North-East 🌍 As Climate Week North-East is in full swing, we've been encouraging our eco-minded students to delve deeper in to some of the green-centric initiatives around! Climate Week is a great opportunity for our students to address and work towards reaching the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of... ⭐ ending poverty ⭐ protecting the planet ⭐ and to achieve peace and prosperity for all by 2030 Some of our students were given the task of creating a "Planet-Friendly Burger", working together to develop their ideas for delicious plant-based buns, all whilst being challenged to consider a wide range of environmental factors! It's safe to say that the burgers were a hit with all of the students AND teachers involved... see for yourself 🍔 Once again it has been another successful year of renewing our 'EcoSchools Green Flag' award, something we are extremely proud of as we continue to play a part in cutting carbon for a more sustainable future. Dr Debjani Sarkar, the sustainability support officer for NHS Grampian, gave a talk about the Greener Theatres programme yesterday afternoon as part of #ClimateWeekNorthEast. She explained how surgical teams can make surgery more sustainable and the difference they are already making by doing things like sending lots more waste to recycling. She also said work led by anaesthetists had made a big difference to the type and amount of anaesthetic gases being used here in Grampian. Dr Sarkar said: "Clinical choice has a huge environmental impact. If you work in health care and have ideas about things that could be done to make your work environment more sustainable, please get in touch with NHS Grampian's Sustainability Network." Dr Sarkar also talked about the NHS Grampian Sustainability Strategy and how health care workers can bring the strategy to life. Today we had an amazing turn out for our @climateweeknortheast beach clean in Newburgh ! 20 volunteers over 2.5 hours helped collect over 2000 bio media filters , 27kg of litter including rope, netting, plastic straws and polystyrene!
