🇨🇭 Letzte Nacht haben wir im Hafen von St. Andrews übernachtet. ⚓️ Heute Morgen erkunden wir zu Fuss die kleine Stadt, die für ihre zahlreichen Golfplätze, verwinkelten Kopfsteinpflasterstrassen und beeindruckenden Gebäude wie z.B. die Kathedrale bekannt ist. ⛪️ Anschliessend geht es in den Tentsmuir Forest und wir unternehmen einen ausgedehnten Spaziergang durch die einheimischen Kiefern und weitläufigen Sanddünen. 🌲 In Newport-on-Tay endet die Fife Coastal Route und wir fahren nach Blairgowrie, wo die Snow Roads Scenic Route durch den Cairngorms Nationalpark beginnt. 👍 Auf dem Weg zum Balmoral Castle, dem Schloss der königlichen Familie, kommen wir am Aussichtspunkt Connecting Contours, am Glenshee Ski Center und am ehemaligen Jagdschloss Braemar Castle vorbei. 🏰 Da wir morgen eine Wanderung rund um den Loch Muick unternehmen werden, fahren wir am späten Nachmittag zum Wanderparkplatz. Um uns herum grasen rund 50 Rothirsche, ein unglaublich tolles Erlebnis. 🦌 🇬🇧 Last night we slept in the harbor of St. Andrews. ⚓️ This morning we explore the small town on foot, which is known for its numerous golf courses, winding cobbled streets and impressive buildings such as the cathedral. ⛪️ Afterwards, we head to Tentsmuir Forest and take a long walk through the native pines and extensive sand dunes. 🌲 The Fife Coastal Route ends in Newport-on-Tay and we drive to Blairgowrie, where the Snow Roads Scenic Route through the Cairngorms National Park begins. 👍 On the way to Balmoral Castle, the castle of the royal family, we pass the Connecting Contours viewpoint, the Glenshee Ski Center and the former hunting lodge Braemar Castle. 🏰 As we are going on a hike around Loch Muick tomorrow, we drive to the hikers' parking lot in the late afternoon. I keep thinking my winter work has finished 🤔! Well, it wasn't really winter today, just a beautiful and at times changeable spring day in the Cairngorms, with plenty of fresh snow overlying the older firm snow in places, and everything from hail showers and mist to blue sky and sunshine! Classic Scottish weather. It was a pleasure to meet Dafydd today - we have been "social media buddies" for a while, keeping up with each other's adventures, but today we finally managed some hill time together. Dafydd is already a competent navigator but is keen to push his skills up a notch. The Cairngorm Plateau is the perfect place to hone such skills and we spent a full day hopping around various points with lots of top tips and handy hints along the way. ‘The balance tree’ an original painting currently on display at the 1896 Gallery Boat of Garten. I often reflect on how lucky I’ve been to grown up in such an uplifting environment, where thousands flock from across the world to visit to our Highland home of outstanding beauty. Beyond that, to have had the privilege to bring up my own three sons here - is a great source of gratitude. Having one of natures finest adventure playgrounds literally on our doorstep - was a boon and a lifesaver! We all have our favourite walks, and there are many ! Some we share and some just remain quiet secrets. ‘The balance tree’ was a favourite obstacle - in a course of plenty on the shores of Loch Garten. My children won’t be the first and certainly won’t be the last to have found - in the freedom of the great forest school - key tools for life, and all through the joy of curiosity and play. The Torridon Mountains Majestic mountain paradise for hikers, climbers, geologists and nature lovers. The mountains of Torridon contain some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland. They are made from ancient Lewisian Gneiss rocks, over 2 billion years old, with the youthful Cambrian quartzites topping the peaks and sandwiching the massive layer of Torridonian rocks that make up the bulk of the landscape. These are composed of a mix of reddish sandstones, conglomerates and mud stones, deposited around 700 million years ago in massive rivers and lake. Wild Garlic 🌱 One of our favourite foraged greens because it's so abundant and so versatile. If you passed by Ballintean this week, your nose would be full of this delicious smell coming from our kitchen as we try to preserve as much of it as we can for our menus throughout the year. 📸 1: Wild Garlic Salt, great with so many savoury dishes. 📸 2: Wild Garlic bulbs, which we have marinated in a sweet vinegar. 📸 4: The very reason why anyone unsure or new to foraging should invest in a good foraging book. Thank you to the 30+ folk (and two dogs!) who turned up to @boathall last night for the screening of @freedomtorunfilm! It was eye-opening to see the daily challenges of Pa/estin1ans trying to get from A to B in the Occupied W3st B4nk - especially if that involves sport or running. The camaraderie between friends - men and women all running together - in B3thlehem and other places across Pa/lest!ne as a way to resist aparth3id and the increasing restrictions is really humbling and inspiring to see. Especially for us in a national park where we have the right to roam and expect freedom of movement to be a given. The film really shows what living in an occupied land looks and feels like. We were lucky enough to have a (virtual) discussion with both filmmakers afterwards too - thank you for sharing with us! 𝗧𝗵𝗲 Highland Folk Museum - 𝟯𝟬𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 🏴 𝗕𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: Make your way through the pinewoods and travel back in time to the 1730s…Step inside the cruck-framed and heather thatched buildings, smell the peat smoke rising from the central hearth, and learn about rural tenant life in the era of the Jacobites. The collection of turf and thatch buildings is based on the archaeological remains of Raitts, which was one of the principal townships in the Badenoch area, five miles north-east of the museum. If the Scottish historical drama Outlander is your thing, then you won’t be disappointed to learn that this recreated 1730s township was used as a film location for Series One, Episode Five (Rent). The local Badenoch waulking group – Comhlan Luadh Bhàideanach – featured in the episode, carrying out the shrinking of the homespun and woven cloth whilst singing Gaelic folk songs. Stop to take in the uninterrupted views across to the Cairngorms, and enjoy the costumed interpreters who bring Baile Gean (Township of Goodwill) to life with traditional crafts such as spinning and thatching. Few favourites of the big boy from the weekend, camped up Linn o Dee to find out a single mattress is absolutely not acceptable for me and Mac 🙄😂 and my tent is also not waterproof anymore so was a rough night to say the least but headed to Loch Muick on the Sunday. Moving to the Cairngorms National Park felt like going on my holidays and never leaving. It’ll be three years this summer since we packed up the last of our things and moved here. Change can be hard and overwhelming, even in the most spectacular of settings. When there’s big life changes like this it takes me a while to fully settle in. At first I felt like I should be scaling mountainsides, celebrating dozens of summits and paddling the river Spey every evening and weekend. But in reality, that didn’t happen, because I was just settling in, still working full time, parenting my daughter and spending time establishing and enjoying a new family of 3 with my new husband in a brand new location and all that brings. The ground work for all of that was and still is the most important thing. The mountains aren’t going anywhere. I live among them and I get to see them each time I look out the window. Now that I’m more settled in I can feel myself relaxing about adventures a lot more. I’m realising there’s no need to put pressure on myself to achieve all these adventures all of the time just because I live here now. Recently I’ve noticed a natural shift and I’m making time to get outside more and enjoy more adventures, not in a way which feels like I SHOULD, simply because I live here. It’s more a case of wanting to because it fits in with the lifestyle that I’ve shaped and created over the last three years. That feels good. It feels right. It feels like I’m finding my adventure groove in this place I now call home. Bit by bit.
