A group of early twentieth century cold painted metal figures depicting Pip, Squeak and Wilfred c1925. Pip (Penguin), Squeak (Dog) and Wilfred (Rabbit) were the characters in a British Strip Cartoon published in The Daily Mirror between 1919 and 1956. Ça faisait longtemps que je voulais découvrir les aventures du chat du rabbin de @joannsfar, c’est chose faite et j’en suis ravie, d’autant plus que je les ai achetés à la librairie Française de TLV, je trouve que ça a un petit côté symbolique. 🐈⬛Je suis tout de suite sous le charme de ce chat oriental aux grandes oreilles, aux yeux vert émeraude, à la robe gris souris et j’apprends que l’auteur s’est inspiré de son propre chat Imohtep, pour créer ce personnage et quel personnage ! 🐈⬛Nous sommes dans un quartier d’Alger, ce n’est pas facile d’être le chat du rabbin, d’ailleurs les rabbins n’ont pas de chats, plutôt des chiens et encore, ça reste rare. Ce chat adore sa maîtresse, Zlabiya, la fille du rabbin dont le prénom évoque un doux gâteau au miel, elle le cajole beaucoup et pense qu’il ne lui manque que la parole, comme le perroquet de la maison que le chat ne supporte plus. D’ailleurs il le mange et voilà qu’il se met à parler et il ment, disant au rabbin que le perroquet s’est enfui ! 🐈⬛Le rabbin veut remettre le chat dans le droit chemin, ce n’est pas beau de mentir, il lui inculque la torah, le Talmud, la kabbale et le chat s’interroge, est-il juif ? Et si oui pourquoi ne fait-il pas sa bar-mitsva ? 🐈⬛C’est le judaïsme que l’auteur transmet dans ce roman graphique, de façon ludique, voire philosophique. Il nous donne des messages de sagesse et de tolérance avec parfois une petite pointe d’ironie et ce chat pose des questions très pertinentes, il a aussi des réponses appropriées et réfléchies, l’humour n’est jamais loin. 🐈⬛J’ai passé un super moment de lecture et j’ai enchaîné sur le tome 2. GRAPHIC INFORMATION SEQUENTIAL ILLUSTRATION, Bernard Venables, Mr Crabtree Goes Fishing 1953, Mirror Publications SUMMER, the reel and the pursuit of CARP ‘The King of Summer… ‘Carp that gives you the biggest thrill….”. My pal Mike Pidgley kept me informed of his art historical researches, and while discussing the Bristol artist, Francis Danby, showed me a previous cataloguing of Danby's major painting ‘Dead Calm, Sunset at the Bight of Exmouth’ (Tate) where the whole context changed with the misprint “Dead Clam”. Similarly I have linguistic problems with texts describing a Giant Carp. It is a unchanging verity that men with pipes and/or woolly hats grin shamelessly into the camera holding a captured carp bigger than their heads. The partiality for angling was born early in persons of my generation, derived from the drawings of Bernard Venables for the Sunday Mirror. I confess to a greater preference for pictures of Liz Fraser, ....but here they are, Mr V and Peter striding the river bank. Summer and Winter. His landscapes had considerable charm. Born in 1907 in Catford, he was trained as an artist, at Croydon, and after a conventional career in commercial art joined the Daily Express. His first employment was in image alone but after being poached for the Mirror, saw that generating his own text is more effective than letting in some Hack. In 1947 he started the strip for the Mirror which became so popular, Venables was given a whole page, and later in an annual anthology of the strips with decorative add-ons. These sold in their millions for which he was paid not a penny extra beyond his staffer’s wages. He died still angling in 1995 at the age of 94 still in pursuit of trout, tench, and tarpon (all of which have their possibilities as misprints). This shambling opaque character with chin strap beard and trousers tied at the knee with twine was anodyne compared with the Agriculturalists we encountered in deepest Norfolk in 1977. His facsimile lived over the fields from us, Reggie Lister, who had the reputation of being a demented leftie, being the first man in the village to refuse to touch his forelock to the Lord of the Manor. Adam also has all the appearance of Hardingham’s Cyril Eek, a man who died horribly picking sprouts. To keep his trousers from soaking up water from the plants he tied dry corn stalks round his legs as was the local custom, And, having a fag at lunch, he inadvertently set fire to himself and was remembered as a hurtling ball of fire heading for the stream nearby. SEQUENTIAL ILLUSTRATION, THE STRIP CARTOON. 1. The Brighton MA Course originated with the title “Narrative Illustration and Editorial design”. It started in 1989 against a background of an institutional culture that associated the Narrative with something unpleasant on your shoe. Now we are all expected to have narratives, so there. Teaching with George Hardie and John Vernon Lord was an utter joy, a genuine team effort. Through documenting every session on paper and on screen, by the time I left in 2005, we have a veritable taxonomy of the specific proposition of the Course. Nothing was beneath our critical attentions, zines, print sequences, triptychs, so, having grown up with Eagle, Dandy and Beano, I returned to find Winsor McCay and, in living form, Dick Briel, the inventor of Professor Palmboom. As a kid I was allowed the Eagle comic with its surreptitious moral tone (the Rev Chad Varah) and beautifully drawn visual guides to the Physical World.
