I collect vintage gardening and garden design books from the 19 teens to mid century. For design purposes, I think it’s important that if you live in a historic home the landscape should tie into the architecture. I am also someone who loves research. The gardening books are incredibly practical and simple - they never say it’s not hard work or that pests and plant fails won’t happen - but they are a good reminder that there is no such thing as a “black thumb” and anyone can have a productive garden. Adam the Gardener was a series published in the British paper The Sunday Express. My version is from 1946. I love the illustrations and the excellent advice and how tasks are divided between the kitchen, fruit, and kitchen garden. GRAPHIC INFORMATION SEQUENTIAL ILLUSTRATION, Cyril Cowell, ‘Adam the Gardener’ Sunday Express Picture Gardening c1958 accredited with a significant contribution to the Dig for Victory campaign during the Second World War (unproven from my records) . This shambling opaque character with chin strap beard and trousers tied at the knee with twine was anodyne compared with the Agriculturalists we encountered in deepest Norfolk in 1977. His facsimile lived over the fields from us, Reggie Lister, who had the reputation of being a demented leftie, being the first man in the village to refuse to touch his forelock to the Lord of the Manor. Adam also has all the appearance of Hardingham’s Cyril Eek, a man who died horribly picking sprouts. To keep his trousers from soaking up water from the plants he tied dry corn stalks round his legs as was the local custom, And, having a fag at lunch, he inadvertently set fire to himself and was remembered as a hurtling ball of fire heading for the stream nearby. GARDENS, AN ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVE, Adam the Gardener, a strip cartoon featuring the Sunday Express’ character intended to jog the reader/gardener into observing the seasons. The chin strap beard (1983) is a worry, although any elderly working class craftsman is expected to cultivate one despite its associations. We moved to a cottage outside Hardingham in Norfolk in 1972 with an acre of untilled land. I knew nothing about vegetables until taught by Reggie, poacher and political rebel, the first man not to tug his forelock at the local squire. When painting the front door scarlet, Reggie asked if this was a “statement of your religion”, and finding we were not Tories, hid his purloined pheasants under our oil tank. Morley Punshon Adams was born in Ipswich, Suffolk on the 30th August 1876, one of six children raised by his mother Kate Amelia Adams, Thomas, his father died at the age of 44 when Morley was 8. ❇️He was educated at a Private school and in his early 20’s worked as a civilian clerk for the Army pay corps in Kingston on Thames before becoming a Journalist & Author. ❇️In 1911 he lived in the furnished front rooms of the ground floor at 1 the Mount, Heath street, Hampstead, rented from Walter Barraclough, a restaurant manager who lived on the upper floors with his family. ❇️Morley was a prolific writer of Non-fiction books about natural history, hobbies, recreations and games and was known on Fleet Street as the ‘Crossword King’, he imported the crossword puzzle to Britain and complied the very first book of crosswords in England. ❇️He wrote widely for newspapers and magazines including the daily express, evening standard, illustrated news and worked for the amalgamated press for 15 years, his own company ‘Morley Adams Ltd’ who had offices on Fleet street provided a newspaper features service to provide crossword puzzles, a company that his daughter and family continued well into the 50’s. ❇️One of Morley’s greatest creations was “Adam the Gardener’, a popular weekly gardening strip in the Sunday express during the 1940’s. Each week he advised gardeners exactly what to plant and how, swell as techniques on pruning and potting and handy tips, Morley’s words were accompanied with illustrations by Cyril Cowell. ❇️Morley Married Angela O’Driscoll in 1929 and had one daughter Mary. So I'm on another mission, to completely disprove that Wasps are your enemy and are in fact your friend. At the bottom of this compost pile is a large wasps nest. I spent 45 mins cutting back a large lilac that was covering the pile, with a CHAINSAW whilst wasps flew around me. Don't get me wrong I was careful not to disturb the nest however not one sting and I was within 0.5m from a nest. Wasp are naturally curious creatures, annoyingly so, however there primary goal is to find food and materials for the nest, the same as bees. They are crucial pollinators and help to breakdown dead matter including carrion and dead animals. They are also eaten by other insects primarily spiders, (see my video). Give them a break. One of her own Boston mother’s many mantras was “obstacles, no obstacles”. Trees bleed aswell. This is a prime example of why certain trees should not be heavily primed this time of year. This is one particular species a weeping silver birch, the sap is rising because of warm temperatures and this can be seen within literally seconds of cutting. This particular species could literally bleed to death if heavily pruned. Always check the right time of year to prune your trees.
