After taking their final bow over the past weekend, how I must make a post dedicated to this brilliant political thriller “A Mirror” - one of the most unforgettable plays and top to my favorites of all I’ve seen this year so far. . In a delicate “Russian doll-ish” play in a play in a play set, the story starts as a wedding (entire theatre the venue, audiences the guests), which unfolds as a camouflage for performing a play, which goes on telling a story about writing a play, which then reveals as a dark linkage to the “reality” where everyone of us audiences ends up as an accomplice. . The play ends with this addressing the audience: “Take a good look at the people to your left, and to your right, odds are they’ll be your cellmates tonight.” . It is an astonishingly dark, witty, and powerful theatre work written by @samanthaholcroft , wonderfully directed by the super talented and super busy @jerherrin , and brilliantly played by #JonnyLeeMiller , @tanyaloureynolds , @samueladewunmi_ , #GeoffreyStreatfeild and rest cast. . Long Day’s Journey Into Night 🌚 Opening Night A deep and affecting play that delves into family trauma, addiction and struggles…not a light watch. LDJIN is an autobiographical depiction of the author’s, Eguene O’Neill’s family over a single day in summer 1912. As the play leads from the beginning of the day into the night, the plot becomes darker and deeper, reflecting the passing time, exploring difficult topics such as resentment, addiction and conflict. James Tyrone, played by Succession star, Brian Cox, portrays very accurately an alcoholic faded actor who is the head of the family. Patricia Clarkson, who played Mary, James’ wife, was a scene stealer, portraying wonderfully a drug-induced, hallucinogenic and bewildered mother. It is quite heartbreaking to see her character deteriorate, leading to the climax with Mary’s eventual breakdown and the family, alongside their own struggles, recognising the extent of her mental health decline. Mary’s dialogue is perfect, with muddled up words, representing her jumbled thoughts. There is a constant horn throughout the play and the interval, which is commented on by the family during frantic moments. This constant feature is clever at bringing the audience along and driving them into insanity alongside the characters. The minimal set changes serve to divert concentration to the dialogue and emotions of the characters. An unsettling but powerful watch. Plaza Suite 👫 This was a joy to watch. Plaza Suite is comprised of 3 vignettes featuring different couples staying in a luxurious hotel suite in New York. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick play the three couples. They are brilliant together. It was lovely to experience a real life couple portraying couples on stage, as you could really feel their chemistry and the fun they created together. These vignettes become funnier, with the last being so ridiculous that the whole audience was in fits of laughter throughout.
