Day 1 - The Minutes by Tracy Letts To start year five, we are visiting a place that has taken up a lot of space in the news this year… Local government. Most all of us are familiar with the federal government, specifically every four years when there’s a presidential election, that seems to dominate all forms of television. And while those elections are important, we as Americans seem to be much much less aware of what is happening in the government of our own towns. So, what happens when you find out that this group of elected officials - your doctor, your neighbor, your friends - may not be acting in good faith, or in the best interest of the town. What do you do then? Peel, a new member of the Big Cherry City Council, has returned for this week’s meeting. Hyesoo finds out that while he was gone last week, incident occurred, removing Carp from the council. All the while entertaining deals from other councilman, and the policies and procedures of the actual meeting, Peel continues to try and figure out exactly what happened the week before. Finally, through a loophole in the procedures, Peel is able to have the minutes of last week’s meeting read aloud, exposing a few of the town’s dirty little secrets. And, once all is revealed, he is left with a choice - advocate, or assimilate. In a final debate with the mayor, Peel says this: “Of course we all want the best for our children, Mr. Mayor, but the way you give them that future matters. The way you conduct yourself matters. The lessons you teach your children, the examples you set for them, who you are… It matters.” The Minutes is a crisp, tight look into the inner workings of local government. It is also a damning look into the treatment of Native Americans, the rewriting of history, and the lies we tell ourselves to feel better about the actions of our ancestors. They are: . “Terminating, or Lass Meine Schmerzen Nicht Verloren Sein, or Ambivalence” by Tony Kushner, based on sonnet 75 “Painting You” by William Finn, based on sonnet 102 “Waiting for Philip Glass” by Wendy Wasserstein, based on sonnet 94 “The General of Hot Desire” by John Guare, based on sonnets 153 and 154 (and “The Golden Legend” by Jacobus de Voragine) . I #loved all of them BUT I was absolutely, completely, bowled over and blown away by “The General of Hot Desire,” the last in the cycle, and the one that features the whole company. Essentially, it’s about the act of creation itself, examined through the lens of several stories from the Bible. On Sunday my mom and I attended the @ctgla annual Gala. It was such an honor to be surrounded by theatre loving individuals who are truly inspired to share live theatre with all! We had the pleasure of being serenaded by the incredible @msleasalonga who brought me to tears with her rendition of Not While I’m Around from Sweeney Todd. @melissamccarthy came out to honor the legacy of Sir Mathew Borne for his incredible work within not only the ballet world but the theatre world. Exciting changes to next years season! OneCTG has decided to combine their theatres and offer a subscription to all. By combining these amazing theatres together, they will be able to offer more quality and variety of theatre for everyone. I was surprised and impressed with the announcement of the 2024/2025 season! I am thrilled that the Mark Taper is back in action and coming in hot with some of the most powerful works. To kick off the season, OneCTG will present along with @deafwest - a new take on Green Day’s American Idiot. I am sooo beyond excited about this collaboration! Deaf West makes incredible productions and this one will be next level! I can't believe I finally get to announce this to the world. April roundup. Got to see Eric Idle at the @spamalotbway closing. Got to go on stage @newworldstages during @lifeandslimes to play #doubledare and met the amazing @realmarcsummers. Saw a musical about a woman’s hoo-ha that has teeth. Saw the first preview of @cabaretthemusical @kitkatclubnyc (Eddie Redmayne is a national treasure, y’all) Saw a folksy off-off-Broadway show with a friend I don’t get to see often. Did a two show day and saw @notebookmusical (which made me cry) and @suffsmusical (which thrilled me). It was a solidly shitty month otherwise, so I’m glad I had some reprieve in the form of my favorite hobby. Also did some non-theatre really cool stuff, like I got to meet @chefmarcmurphy and eat at his pop up restaurant @marc179nyc for our anniversary. Hands down the best meal I’ve ever had.
