Urban nature for the win! Yesterday, I was invited to join @leicanature on a guided urban nature walk lead by the fabulous @ellekayetaxidermy. It's no secret that my home of London is packed full of wildlife delights & that in every inch of green space there is something showing off its natural talents, but this walk wasn't aimed at people that already engage with this, it was aimed at people looking to start their journey. 💚 I love seeing & hearing people connect with nature for maybe the first time. Watching their smile as they see the patterns on the back of a starling or see the flash of blue on the wing of a jay as it flies above them....(of course, I also showed people what was going on at ground level in the form of yellow rattle & red ragged robin showing off their colours). Seeing that inbuilt love & emotion sparkle for potentially the first time, especially for wildlife that is native to England & on their doorstep, is what inspires me to continue talking about it every day. 🎙Of course, I found time to grab some podcast chats with Elle about the guided walk, urban nature & people's inbuilt love for nature. I asked myself a big question last year 🎨Why do I actually paint marine life?🐋 Yes I spent 5 years of my childhood along the Pacific Coast in Lima, Peru but I never really saw marine life, never snorkeled, never really looked below the surface So where was this obsession for these animals born? To answer this, I had to spend a lot of time exploring my own inner world 🌎 I chased academic achievements and left little time for creative play. Fast forward to the age of 27 when I picked up a paintbrush again and my love for it returned as if no time had passed Over the next few years, I experimented with different subjects, colours, and scenes🎨 Eventually I became obsessed with painting turtles🐢. Their detailed shells, their fins, their kind eyes. One day it hit me like a tonne of bricks...I've been painting the peace that my mind always craved🩵. Asking for consent is very important before taking a selfie. We had a good talk about it. 😶 I didn’t have this feeling at all when I was there but now I do think it’s kind of morbid to admire dead animals this way pure for my entertainment.
