Nestled high in Mother Nature's hammock, two spring cubs ride the breeze in sweet slumber. A lullaby plays through the vibrating leaves as the limbs beat out a tune. Far below, with her back up against the scratchy bark, an exhausted mother grabs a few winks of sleep. Her ears on alert, she's ever the watchful mother as her babies rest above. A third cub attacks the tree trunk above her head and he races to the top. His tiny claws dig into the side and pull him higher and higher, away from his mama and siblings. A twig snaps under his tiny, little paw and it tumbles down to land on mother bear's head. She barely acknowledges the intrusion. Mama bear knows exactly where her babies are. "Titans of Time" When wild animals are the subject, it's nearly impossible for the image you dream of capturing to come to life. However, in this photo of Tim and Craig - the largest tusked elephants in the world at the time - the image in my mind's eye became a reality. Only an estimated 24 elephants with tusks weighing 200 lbs. or more are still roaming the Earth today. The near disappearance of these super tusk elephants from our world is believed to be due to the hands of humans after their ivory, despite the trade's illegality. These massive elephants survived on the fringes of the African bush, far from the eager eyes of poachers, for many, many years. Super tusker elephants are relics of a time past and symbolic of the supreme majesty of mother nature. Stoic yet emotionally aware and giant yet epically silent, they command attention with an unyielding magnetism reserved for super tuskers alone. These animals have an ancient life force surrounding them, and this spirit is what I wanted to harness in my images. A few months after this photo was taken, Tim passed away due to natural causes. I feel very lucky to have spent time near him and will always cherish these images. As far as creating an iconic image of the largest tusked elephants on Earth, I don't think I can do much better than this. This image is from my series, Colossal Shadows: Super Tuskers of East Africa

Last week, while speaking at my Alma Mater, Universidad de La Salle Bajio, about working abroad, I took the opportunity to discuss something I witnessed firsthand. Photos of people posing with wildlife may seem harmless, but they can actually promote the illegal wildlife trade. Some individuals may see these images and desire a similar encounter, thus increasing the demand for wild animals as pets and fueling the illegal wildlife trade. Furthermore, these interactions can be harmful to both animals and people, as they can transmit diseases and cause stress to the wild animals involved. It’s crucial to promote responsible and ethical tourism that respects wildlife and their habitats. If you have the opportunity to take a photo posing with a wild animal, it’s better not to do it. I remember when I was a student getting all excited from holding a wildcat cub. Let’s talk about Opossums. They have one of the shortest lifespans of all mammals. They are the only marsupial in North America. They are omnivores and require a varied diet to prevent metabolic disease. Their body temperature is low, so they rarely carry disease. barnacle goose - Weißwangengans (Branta leucopsis) 🇦🇹 Mein Urlaub in Schweden hat schon mit tierischen Begegnungen begonnen als am Flughafen die ersten Kiebitze zu sehen waren. Fürs Besichtigen der Stadt habe ich mich fürs leichtere Equipment entschieden: Meine @canonaustria EOS R6 und das rf 24-70mm f2.8l, das ich mir von @digitalkameraverleih geliehen habe. Als ich dann an einem Fluss mitten in der Stadt einige Weißwangengänse beobachten konnte, war ich sehr froh, dieses Objektiv dabei gehabt zu haben und es mal für Tiere statt Architektur testen zu können. Ich bin echt beeindruckt von Präzision und Schärfe 😊 Ich finde es immer wieder schön Tiere in der Stadt zu fotografieren, weil man viel experimentieren kann, wenn sie entspannt und Menschen gewöhnt sind. Ich freue mich schon, es ab morgen Abend in der Wildnis zu verwenden. Aber auch auf die Motive, die ich mit meinem rf 100-500mm festhalten werde bin ich gespannt! 🇬🇧 My vacation in Sweden started with animal encounters when I saw the first lapwings at the airport. I opted for the lighter equipment for sightseeing in the city: my @canonaustria EOS R6 and the rf 24-70mm f2.8l, which I borrowed from @digitalkameraverleih. When I was able to observe some white-cheeked geese on a river in the middle of the city, I was very happy to have this lens with me and to be able to test it for animals instead of architecture. I'm really impressed by the precision and sharpness 😊 I always enjoy photographing animals in the city because you can experiment a lot when they are relaxed and used to people. I'm looking forward to using it in the wild from tomorrow evening. Osprey in the "Aliki" Wildlife Refuge! For another migrating season, an Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) the "sea eagle" as its scientific name means, was observed for a few days in a row fishing and feeding in the Lagoon. This amazing bird of prey is piscivorous, feeding almost exclusively on fish which it catches after free diving in the water. In the "Aliki" wildlife refuge it fed mostly on flathead mullets, which get trapped in the Lagoon and become easy prey for the Osprey. Rufous hummingbirds are quite amazing - they migrate here from Mexico to breed in our summers here in BC. Often to the very same tree, bush and even land on the exact branch they use as a lookout perch - every single year! And it is often their offspring (they only have a relatively short life expectancy- 5 years) so they pass on the migratory route to their young who return to perch on the exact same branch. Humans are not the only critters who use the cave... During the summer, hardly any bats are seen inside the cave because they would rather be out in the canyon where it is warm. They eat bugs by the river and use trees to roost on. Around the middle of September, the bats start looking for a place to hunker down for the winter. The cave is an ideal location because it stays a nice 45°F/7°C year-round. Once tours stop inside the cave for the year, they feel more comfortable heading in there to hibernate. We humans can be noisy! One of the principles of Leave No Trace is Respect Wildlife. When visiting the cave or hiking on the trail, it is important to remember that we are only visitors to these creatures' homes.
