SOLARPUNK INSPO: PLACES TO GATHER Community starts when people who share the same space can gather together. The "village" in many ways is a concept, a name given to an experience of connection with other people. Every time you say "good morning" to someone in your hometown, and they say "good morning" back, you have both reconstituted the village in that moment, if only for a moment. The nature of the place itself plays a big part in helping to make that experience possible. But for the past 70 years, the Dominant Culture of North America in particular has not built spaces that allow for community. One thing it has made was malls: large hubs that you need a vehicle to get to in order to reach, at a tremendous cost in infrastructure maintenance and environmental impact. Further, people who do congregate do so to shop, not to connect with each other. These are places that make it difficult, it not impossible, for the "village" to be reconstituted. What would a solarpunk future look like for Hamilton's malls? How would you recreate these places, using solarpunk principles? Contest deadline extended to Labour Day 2024.
