𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗽 – gone 🤕 . What I thought was „just“ a bothersome broken rib from Atlas Mountain Race turned out to be a pneumothorax. To treat this and to get the air out of my chest I got a tube inserted between my ribs. In other words: I am not running tubeless anymore. . For the moment, though, I am confined to bed - and there are few things that drive me crazier than losing my freedom of movement. Its hard, its devastating. It’s definitely more fun sharing good things instead of those, but i am thankful, cause it could be worse. . 𝗔𝘁𝗹𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗽 𝗼𝗻𝗲 . The Atlas Mountain Race this year was filled with incredible stories. My start was far from ideal: stomach issues from poor food choices. Carb-loading two days before the race with only dry bread and bananas – not the best strategy. Then, the start was postponed indefinitely, eventually delayed by 24 hours due to bad weather and complex bureaucratic hurdles. It was a turbulent beginning, to say the least. But finally, we were off! . One of the remarkable aspects that struck me was the stark contrasts in Morocco. From the vibrant chaos of Marrakesh to desolate stretches where we didn't see a sign of life for over 100 kilometers – just desert and dryness. No houses. Nothing. It felt like being in the middle of nowhere, then suddenly stumbling upon a lush green oasis in a valley. And minutes later, back to rugged, moon-like landscapes. Astonishing contrasts. . Due to the earthquake last October, many simple homes in rural areas were damaged or destroyed. Yet, the hospitality of the local people remained unwaveringly warm and welcoming. Another stark contrast, but one that left a lasting impression. . . 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀: 𝗔𝘁𝗹𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱 . Let’s say I did some races the last years, but each and every race is a new surprise. Unfortunately, the start of the Atlas Mountain Race 2024 has been postponed - due to severe weather conditions. It had not rained around here for 5 months, and not so much rain in one day for a few years. The local authorities were too concerned to let the race start with the risk of facing flash floods, dangerous river crossings, landslides, or similar issues in the Atlas. . Personally, I am not sad about not starting in the rain and directly going up to the highest point of the race where even snow was reported this morning. But a lot of people get into trouble with their travel plans and might not be able to finish as they have to catch a flight. It’s a shame, but there is nothing the organization can do about this. It’s a matter of safety, and I support and understand the decision, even if I still would prefer to be out on my bike now. . Anyway – it’s most likely that the start will happen tomorrow, Saturday at 6 pm – so 24 hours later. The organization will still try to push it to an earlier time, but it’s not in our hands.
