After a terrible night's sleep, we were torn as to what to do! No one was enthusiastic for a day of hanging out at the petrol station, but it was a long way to the first spot where we were sure we had protected camping and we were going to be pedalling into a very strong headwind. Eventually, we decided to go for it. @rich_tb suggested we form a pelotón and take it in turns to do 3km at the front. I think it was the only way we got through the day...progress was slow and only got slower as the wind got stronger! We were hit with brutal winds from the side blowing us sideways but somehow we muddled through. We were so grateful when the police station came into sight 78km later and we realised we have made it! To add insult to injury, the next morning we absolutely flew to the border with a beautiful tail wind! We crossed back into Chile...for the final time this trip and initially we decided to head south towards Puerto Natales with a plan to hitchhike back with backpacks and do some hiking in Torres del Paine. WE BIKED FOR 6 MONTHS IN SOUTH AFRICA 🥳 Let’s discuss the country's reputation for crime… Yes, it’s here, and yes, it can be dangerous. The good news is that crime is confined to localised areas, making it easy to avoid. As a result, we were never threatened or robbed and felt safe 99.99% of the time. Small towns are usually quite safe, but cities contain lots of roads and suburbs to avoid. Make sure to ask the local people where to go, and where to avoid, and it’s unlikely you’ll have any problems. 👍🏻 The off-road biking adventures in the country feel endless. There are dirt tracks in every direction and the backdrops are unbelievably dramatic! We couldn’t believe the places we got to bike and camp through - it was a new adventure every day. 💎 South Africa is home to some of the most pristine environments on Earth, and the national parks are truly epic places. Kruger is famous for a reason: the sheer scale, raw beauty, and diversity of animals are incredible. But the dozen other NPs we visited were virtually as good, including Table Mountain! If you want your mind blown by rare plants and their unique adaptations, visit Richtersveld, the only arid biodiversity hotspot on earth! If you’re into good food and wine, you will be in heaven in South Africa. The region around Cape Town is where to take your taste buds on a date - it’s a foodie's dream. The best wines we sampled were in Stellenbosch. Don’t miss a trip to Lesotho, the landlocked country in South Africa, as it has a completely different culture and traditions. The entire country is at altitude, with great views everywhere, and the Basotho people ride around on horses wearing blankets! What’s not to like? And lastly, South Africa has a dark history that is worth understanding. We honestly couldn’t believe the depths of the institutionalised racial segregation that ended just 30 years ago. You will still find that racism permeates society, with many kindhearted, well-meaning locals completely clueless about their racism. But it’s best to remind yourself of the beliefs these people were taught from a young age - if this was your worldview for a long time, you too might still think this way. 🤷♂️
It was a bit of a mad rush to the immigration office, he wanted to leave early. It took a couple of hours but I had my visa extension. I then decided to visit the Borobudur Temple, the immigration officer was nearby. It's an amazing structure and took over 100 years to build. •2.30 am, the alarm clock rings. After a 20-minute nap on the side of the road, it’s time to start again. We still have 380 km and a country to cross to finish this adventure . We take turns all night through the long straights towards Mérida. This is not the most glamorous side of the race, we follow a national road for hours and the only goal is to cut down as many kilometers as possible and get closer to the border. After a second stop in a playground for a nap, the wettest is possible, we finally arrive in Mérida. The probability of having the last ferry and finishing the race before midnight is almost zero, but it is essential to continue to advance to the maximum. The day is punctuated by peaks (very short) of energy, micro nap of 10 minutes and a psychological battle against fatigue. That’s exactly what I came for. The arrival in Portugal was marked by a change in the behaviour of motorists. Say goodbye to vehicles that deviate to ensure minimum safety, and hello the 35 tons that border you at more than 100 km/h. The road is very hilly and we move forward painfully. Reaching CP7 tonight is for now a fictitious goal, so much fatigue and stress exhaust me physically and morally. A nap in a corner in the afternoon will allow me to regain some strength , it has been 35 hours that we ride and there are still 200 km. What will save me from this day will be the McDonald’s of Évora, I swallowed a Best of menu in 5 minutes, put three burgers in my jacket and i’m back. Luckily I find the guys out of the city, the sun is setting, the relays are more and more hazardous and I begin to understand that I must finish tonight because another day a bike would be a nightmare given my state of fatigue. A short detour to Torrão to make a last meal and the night has already fallen. The very first morning in Sumbawa. My plan to watch the sunrise from the coast of West Sumbawa failed due to the late arrival of the ferry. I ended up watching the sunrise from the ferry and it was a particularly beautiful morning from the harbour at Poto Tano. Maybe it wasn’t, maybe because it was a new sight for me, especially when I noticed the presence of Lombok’s own Mount Rinjani to my right. The 7am sun was a little more intense than I’m used to, but somehow it was a little cool (not for long though), the air felt so fresh, everything felt new and exhilarating. I started off slowly, mainly to get a good look at Mt. Rinjani from across the sea, and later realised that a particular area called Kertasari had instantly become my favourite. As the clock struck 9:30, I pushed myself to avoid arriving too late at Sekongkang, the finish line. The climbs got harder as I got closer to Sekongkang; maybe it was the high percentage of average gradient, maybe it was the heat. Later that night, one of the locals asked me about the difference between riding in Lombok and Sumbawa, and he pointed out the intensity of the Sumbawa sun. It was definitely the heat that made me struggle.
🇨🇭Nous entamons notre traversée de la Suisse du sud au nord et entre deux grands lacs : le lac Léman et celui de Constance. Pour se faire nous empruntons « La Route des Lacs » qui, comme son nom l’indique, nous fait passer par de nombreux lacs. Alors que nous roulions en cuissard/tee-shirt deux jours auparavant, la température chute drastiquement et nous oblige à nous couvrir davantage. Le froid prend presque toute la place sur ces immenses plaines suisses où broutent des milliers de vaches. La région que nous traversons est connue pour ses fermes et son fromage. Il n’est pas rare de voir des fromageries en libre service sur le bord des routes, et c’est d’ailleurs dans une grange de l’une d’entres elles que nous nous arrêtons dormir la première nuit (photo 1). Le soleil est absent depuis quelques temps, la chaleur de ses rayons commence à nous manquer. Le froid s’intensifie, quelques flocons commencent à tomber du ciel et les journées sont principalement pluvieuses (photo 9-10). Mais la froideur de ces dernières est largement atténuée par l’accueil enflammé que nous réservent les différentes personnes chez qui nous demandons un abri (photo 6). Alors tous les soirs riment avec grand soulagement, nos affaires peuvent sécher et une bonne nuit réparatrice nous attend. Cycling has been, and will continue to have a strong impact on my daily life. I’m lucky to have a career that allows me to combine my passions with my business, @exposurestudio I use my bike daily as a way to minimize my environmental impact while I visit clients, find/setup photo shoot locations and even as a delivery system for any final product. Finding the right balance of comfort and control to help harness the confidence I need to ride a mixture of surfaces is key. That was the reason I turned to @curvecycling for their ultra-wide Walmer 60cm bar for my @konabikes Sutra LTD. I’ve always believed in the “Bigger is Better” mantra of 29er wheels, and now I believe that wider is the final key to an amazingly stable ride. I have a big trip coming up in June, where this new setup should truly shine. I’m flying into Reno,NV to ride through the Sierra Range to Downieville, via a short detour through Graeagle. It’ll be a 220km with 4,367 metres elevation over three days. Ultimately the goal of the trip will be to attend the @lostandfoundbikeride in Portola on June 15th to ride the 100 mile route, visit some friends and get immersed into all the glorious cycling that the @sierratrails offers. I have a few small bike setup things to work out, mostly logistics around all the gear I will need to bring. Thankfully Mike @thiefbikepacking has me all sorted out with a new custom frame bag. His work is amazing and everything is made by hand in his Jasper, Alberta shop. Go check him out! 📍Miliwane Wildlife Reserve. Miliwane is the first wildlife reserve that we have been able to cycle around! They don’t have predotors or large mammals so its safe to ride around oh bikes. We spent a day riding around with the bags off our bikes, but instead of seeing many animals we mostly just hiked our bikes. 😅

Il s’agissait juste de quelques jours loin de la montagne. Proche des amis. Un changement d’air et de teinte de coucher de soleil. On avait presque oublié de vous partager la fin de ce tour de l’île de Wight dans le tourbillon des festivals. Alors s’il fallait résumer en quelques lignes, on dira que cette île, aux forêts enchanteresses est un petit paradis et une magnifique réserve écologique. Les chemins y sont bien boueux, comme on aime, les routes un peu trop bondées (tant mieux ça nous pousse à rester en dehors des grands axes), et surtout qu’il ne faut pas y aller pour espérer manger sainement. Entre fish and chips, pie and chips, chips ou encore les burgers anglais, on a eu du mal à trouver des légumes vapeurs ! On n’en n’a pas trouvé en fait du tout. Chiche aux suivants d’essayer d’en dénicher. Et on vous l’avoue, on était en vacances, on s’est fait plaisir dans des b&b locaux ! La suite ? On s’offre à chacun au mois de juin 4 semaines complètes en solitaire. Jerem de son côté et moi (Sophie) du mien. On vous en dit plus bientôt. Rando pour jerem, vélo pour moi! Juillet, on marchera ensemble pour fêter nos 10 ans et continuer d’avancer tout simplement ! 🌸 DESERTUS EX MACHINA : L’AMOR ME VA BIEN 🌸 Contre la tendinite, je dois rouler moins mais mieux, plus régulier, sans à-coup, sans danseuse. Rouler de nuit les portions les plus monotones pour profiter des levers de soleil sur les plus beaux panoramas. Je ne participe pas à la @desertusbikus pour bâcler le travail, le processus doit prendre son temps. Chaque fois que je m’emballerai, la douleur sera un violent rappel à l’ordre. Grâce à elle, j’ai rencontré des compagnons d’aventure très intéressants que je n’aurais pas connu, j’ai eu des conversations qui n’auraient pu avoir lieu. 🕊Et, à 200km de la fin, paradoxalement si près et si loin du but, j’ai enfin connu l’Envol. Celui que j'attendais autant que je redoutais. Cela fait 4 ans que je suis chez le kiné chaque semaine avec des douleurs de nuque intenses et qui ne trouvent pas d'explication rationnelle autre qu'une traduction psychosomatique. 4 ans que j'attends patiemment que le deuil de mon frère se complète. C'est mon ami @chassol_chassol qui me l'avait dit : "lorsque ton deuil sera complet, tu vas le savoir tout de suite." C'est là, au milieu de champs mauves qui sentent l’eucalyptus, avec une cheville qui pique et un genou qui fatigue : mon dos ne me fait plus du tout mal. Mon petit frère que je porte si fort sur mes épaules est parti, tout mon être devient plus léger. Pour la première fois je l'imagine en paix et heureux, souriant avec cette malice enfantine qui nous unissait. C'est son ultime clin d'oeil, et soudain la force d'aller au bout de cette journée est d'autant plus forte. 💜 Si la mort de mes proches m'émeut, l’amour de mes proches me meut. Ma force de vie est d'autant plus stable que leur repos est doux. J'ai longtemps pédalé en force et voilà que j'avance enfin durablement avec souplesse. Je termine 9e femme alors que je ne fais pas la course et prend mon temps. Mon fils aura cette conclusion laconique "ton vélo est cracra et tu cocotes". Ma mère m’enverra "la chimio porte ses fruits". Maintenant il faudra s'occuper de cette tendinite avec soin, qui m'a permis de ralentir le rythme pour profiter du voyage avec plus d'intensité …et boire un grand verre à nos repos (éternels ou pas).
