This is a summary of week 6 of my world trip in North Macedonia and Bulgaria. 🌍🚴🏽♂️ This week is all about the mountains and I’m climbing an incredible amount of altitude. 🏔️ But that’s not a problem if the weather stays good. ☀️ I head east from Lake Ohrid and in northern Macedonia I finally realise that spring is here. I haven’t even noticed how slowly the trees have turned green because I’ve only been travelling outside for months. 🌲🌳 It’s so beautiful. Life is coming back. 🪻 I take my first break in Bulgaria. People are so friendly again, waving, honking, giving me pudding... And what I really like. Every kilometre, sometimes even every few hundred metres, there is a source of drinking water. I haven’t had to buy water or fill my 10-litre water bag once in this country. 💦 Unfortunately there is also a lot of rubbish in the countryside and the number of street dogs is increasing... more about that in later posts. Into the Bissau-Guinean jungle 💚 We did a little detour on our way to Guinée Conakry to explore Cantanhez National Park and to try to meet wild chimpanzees as there are a few hundreds living in the area. We arrived at Jemberem after a day on beautiful pistes. The next morning at 6 am we were in the rainforest looking for chimpanzees! Thanks to our guide, @mamadu478 we found them pretty quickly. It was really amazing to see them on their palm trees waking up peacefully. But the most incredible is that the next day, on our way to the border, we heard some chimpanzees from the bike. So we went in the forest and we were able to see a whole family! This encounter was really special and unexpected, I felt so lucky, and I can't wait to see more wildlife in the next countries. WE BIKED FOR 6 MONTHS IN SOUTH AFRICA 🥳 Let’s discuss the country's reputation for crime… Yes, it’s here, and yes, it can be dangerous. The good news is that crime is confined to localised areas, making it easy to avoid. As a result, we were never threatened or robbed and felt safe 99.99% of the time. Small towns are usually quite safe, but cities contain lots of roads and suburbs to avoid. Make sure to ask the local people where to go, and where to avoid, and it’s unlikely you’ll have any problems. 👍🏻 The off-road biking adventures in the country feel endless. There are dirt tracks in every direction and the backdrops are unbelievably dramatic! We couldn’t believe the places we got to bike and camp through - it was a new adventure every day. 💎 South Africa is home to some of the most pristine environments on Earth, and the national parks are truly epic places. Kruger is famous for a reason: the sheer scale, raw beauty, and diversity of animals are incredible. But the dozen other NPs we visited were virtually as good, including Table Mountain! If you want your mind blown by rare plants and their unique adaptations, visit Richtersveld, the only arid biodiversity hotspot on earth! If you’re into good food and wine, you will be in heaven in South Africa. The region around Cape Town is where to take your taste buds on a date - it’s a foodie's dream. The best wines we sampled were in Stellenbosch. Don’t miss a trip to Lesotho, the landlocked country in South Africa, as it has a completely different culture and traditions. The entire country is at altitude, with great views everywhere, and the Basotho people ride around on horses wearing blankets! What’s not to like? And lastly, South Africa has a dark history that is worth understanding. We honestly couldn’t believe the depths of the institutionalised racial segregation that ended just 30 years ago. You will still find that racism permeates society, with many kindhearted, well-meaning locals completely clueless about their racism. But it’s best to remind yourself of the beliefs these people were taught from a young age - if this was your worldview for a long time, you too might still think this way. 🤷♂️
ᵂᴱᴿᴮᵁᴺᴳ Irgendwo zwischen Frühling und Winter (in meinem Fall), oder auch zwischen mild und wild, zwischen den sanften Weinbergen der Donau und der rauen Bergwelt der Mostviertler Alpen (für alle anderen Radfahrer:innen, die nicht gerade an den kältesten Tagen seit Winterende unterwegs sind) – das ist der Traisentalradweg 🚲🇦🇹 Auf 111 Kilometern verbindet der Traisentalweg unterschiedliche Welten. Führt mal durch üppige Wälder, am Ufer des gurgelnden Flusses Traisen entlang, mal durch beschauliche Ortschaften und schließlich über einen Pass, bis es immer höher geht, immer wilder wird. Und dann endet er, der Traisentalradweg, zwischen einer postkartenreifen Gipfellandschaft in Mariazell. Ausgeschildert ist die Route des Traisentalradwegs in beide Richtungen. Und während es meiner Erfahrung nach bei Radwegen häufig keinen gravierenden Unterschied macht, in welche Richtung wir ihn befahren, ändert sich der Charakter des Traisentalradwegs mit der Fahrtrichtung schlagartig: Weil du entweder von den lieblichen Hügeln entlang der Donau auf imposante Gipfel zusteuerst – immer bergauf. Oder aber, weil du zwischen den imposanten Gipfeln startest und deutlich gemütlicher auf die Weinrebenlandschaft des lieblichen Mostviertels zurollst. Und ich glaube, genau das macht ihn aus, den Traisentalradweg: Weil er genau das werden kann, was wir suchen, je nachdem, ob wir gen Norden oder Süden radeln. CYCLING IRAN WEEK I 🇮🇷 🔥New Episode 🎬 (link in the bio👆🏽) We’ve been struggling for months whether or not we should cycle in Iran. Our plan B was to take a flight to Central Asia, but eventually, after we had cycled all the way to the border and saw Iran so close, we felt we couldn’t miss the adventure, so despite the many issues we decided to apply for the visa and enter this mysterious country. We are now very excited to share with you our first episode of us cycling Persia! We had never felt such an anxiety about entering another country during our trip, but of course, there are several reasons for it. Despite the unfortunate news we usually get from this part of the world, this enables us to continue to follow the ancient Silk Road to the east. We entered from the northwestern border town Norduz. Our first target is Tabriz and its famous bazaar, but getting there we were faced with some surprises. Get a feeling for this incredible part of our journey through rugged landscapes meeting many people that are part of a world that seems mind-bogglingly different and started to confuse us almost immediately with its contrasts. 📍Miliwane Wildlife Reserve. Miliwane is the first wildlife reserve that we have been able to cycle around! They don’t have predotors or large mammals so its safe to ride around oh bikes. We spent a day riding around with the bags off our bikes, but instead of seeing many animals we mostly just hiked our bikes. 😅

Il s’agissait juste de quelques jours loin de la montagne. Proche des amis. Un changement d’air et de teinte de coucher de soleil. On avait presque oublié de vous partager la fin de ce tour de l’île de Wight dans le tourbillon des festivals. Alors s’il fallait résumer en quelques lignes, on dira que cette île, aux forêts enchanteresses est un petit paradis et une magnifique réserve écologique. Les chemins y sont bien boueux, comme on aime, les routes un peu trop bondées (tant mieux ça nous pousse à rester en dehors des grands axes), et surtout qu’il ne faut pas y aller pour espérer manger sainement. Entre fish and chips, pie and chips, chips ou encore les burgers anglais, on a eu du mal à trouver des légumes vapeurs ! On n’en n’a pas trouvé en fait du tout. Chiche aux suivants d’essayer d’en dénicher. Et on vous l’avoue, on était en vacances, on s’est fait plaisir dans des b&b locaux ! La suite ? On s’offre à chacun au mois de juin 4 semaines complètes en solitaire. Jerem de son côté et moi (Sophie) du mien. On vous en dit plus bientôt. Rando pour jerem, vélo pour moi! Juillet, on marchera ensemble pour fêter nos 10 ans et continuer d’avancer tout simplement ! Day 20 of the bike world tour: Heute bin ich an die bosnische Grenze gekommen. Kroatien war bezaubernd gut zu mir. Ich danke dir, Darling. Meine ersten Learnings aus den 20 Tagen: 1️⃣ Man kommt erstaunlich weit, selbst wenn man jeden Tag nur 60-70 km radelt 2️⃣ Meine größte Angst (Post-Corona-Atemlosigkeit plus Gepäcktaschen plus Berg) weicht langsam einem Grundvertrauen in meinen Körper 3️⃣ Mich begeistert das einsame Wildzelten, die Abende und Morgen sind einfach magisch. Nur das Bedürfnis nach Duschen treibt mich ab und zu in Hostels und Campingplätze 4️⃣ Wildzelten während eines Gewitters ist eine kraftvolle Erfahrung 5️⃣ Einen traumhafteren Einstieg für eine Radtour als den Alpe Adria Radweg sowie die Küsten von Istrien und Dalmatien kann ich mir nicht vorstellen. Wie oft blieb ich unterwegs staunend einfach stehen und rührte mich nicht. Definition eine Radempfehlung, vor allem in der Vorsaison 6️⃣ Ein schwerbepacktes Rad stellt sich als der beste mir bekannte Kommunikationsöffner dar, um auf neugierige und freundliche Gesichter zu stoßen 7️⃣ 2 Platten und ein zwickendes Knie auf den ersten 1000 km. 8️⃣ Ich habe - wie alle - zu viel mitgenommen. Es ist erstaunlich, wie wenig man braucht 9️⃣ Ich genieße gerade so bewusst das Leben, dass es mir schwerfällt meinen Kopf in Ruhe zu halten. 🇪🇸 Barcelona to Lisbon 🇵🇹 Days 6-10: Valencia to Valdepeñas 🚴♂️ I left Valencia about a week and a half ago, following agricultural backroads surrounded by orange groves. Inevitably though, these quiet, narrow paved roads soon gave way to gravel roads and not always easy ones. The terrain was rough in parts and very lumpy. Some sections too steep to ride. The nature was rewarding though. Rabbits scampering across the road in the morning and partridges in the afternoon, running like they were on wheels. As well as orange groves, I passed through fields of grape vines, almond and olive trees. Leaving the province of Valencia, it got very hilly, but really beautiful. Flanked by pine forests on each side and being early in the morning, I saw many deer, mostly galloping across the road - do deer gallop or scamper? This lot mostly galloped, but one just nonchalantly wandered across the road. Passing through the agricultural heartlands of Albacete, wild camping became difficult in such a flat, treeless, agricultural landscape. Whilst the area is very flat, it’s actually located on a plateau of the Alcaraz mountain range, which explains the gigantic limestone rock walls I was riding past on first entering the territory from Valencia province. It has been tough at times, but nobody said cycling across Spain was going to be easy. Setting off each day from my wild camp spots before sun up has meant that my first taste of cycling for the day has been a cold one. Camping on a hill means descending at first light without warming up first, the cool air biting my hands and rushing up my sleeves. But it doesn’t last. . Hello 👋🏼 I thought I’d try an intro post seeing as so many of you have connected over this last year of adventure and maybe you’re curious about the back story… so here goes nothing! I’m proudly Welsh 🏴 and I appreciate even more after this year of travelling how much this means to me. The language, the culture and how much our ancestors strived to protect these will always be a strong part of my identity. In 2015 I moved to Bristol 🌉🐊 and I found it super lonely to be in a new city at first I eventually built an amazing community of riders and adventurers there. It’s where I call home for now, until we figure out where we resettle after returning to the Uk. 2017 was a big year for me, I was signed up to race The Transcontinental and Liam came into my life. The race didn’t end how I imagined but it transformed my life as I’d found my passion in long distance cycling and I’d found my life and adventure partner 💕 Chronic back pain 🩻🦴since late 2019 I’ve been living with mysterious night time back pain. At times it’s been unbearable and I’ve had to endure a lot of stiffness and sleep deprivation and at times I’ve thrived managing well on movement practice, physio and osteopathy. Camping ⛺️ has always been a reliable trigger so when we started this trip I really wasn’t confident we’d get much further than Peru. So given I’m writing this in El Chaltén I’m beyond grateful to my body for getting me this far… but I am ready to sleep a bed again 😂 And finally… how did I get the nickname Dr Thunderthighs?! When I started uni I took up rowing, the first sport I ever loved and it turned out I was really strong 🦵🏼💪🏼🏋️♀️ so I became McThunderthighs. This might have also spared my crew-mates having to use my surname 😂 and after I got my PhD 👩🏼🎓 my nickname got the upgrade! The thunderthighs live on even if I left academia a long time ago! Grenada riding 🚲 ✨ Been training off-road in Grenada this week before @utopiagravel and I’ve spent most of the time spellbound by the insane landscape! I’ve never ridden anywhere with more varied and incredible terrain and I can see why so many people return time and again after discovering this beautiful area. From the Gorafe desert to the Geopark and the stunning lakes, not to mention the views from the top of Jablacon.
