As I made my way down from Etna's summit, my mind was already drifting towards the comfort of my car waiting below. But as I rounded a bend, there it was – Crateri Silvestri, a kaleidoscope of colors amidst the rugged volcanic terrain. Shades of red, black, and green danced across the landscape, encouraging me to linger a little longer. For many, this is the first stop when visiting the Park, for some – the only stop. I could stay there longer, but the rumbling of (my mom's and her friends's) empty stomachs reminded me that we should get back to civilization in search of a cozy spot to dine. Will I be back? Maybe one day. But there are so many other volcanoes I have to summit now. Tra tutti i borghi visti in questo tour della Provenza, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie è probabilmente quello che mi ha stupita di più finora. Forse perché è stata una sorpresa un po’ inaspettata, una tappa ‘di servizio’ utile a visitare le Gole del Verdon con un trekking (che alla fine salteremo causa meteo troppo incerto) e da cui non mi aspettavo nulla. Invece è un piccolo, meraviglioso presepe arroccato dove il tempo sembra essersi fermato. Nonostante i piccoli intoppi che possono capitare in viaggio - i pedalò del Verdon fermi causa vento, il trekking Blanc-Martel da rimandare - mi godo la bellezza di questo panorama incredibile e va bene così. Fanny Stevenson - Alexandra Lapierre ⛵ Fanny Stevenson, ou plutôt Fanny Van de Grift, est une pionnière, voyageuse et écrivaine étasunienne. De la course à l’or dans le Far West, aux îles du Pacifique, en passant par le Paris des peintres du XVIIIème siècle, cette femme est une force de la nature. Une guerrière a eu une vie incroyable où elle n’a cessé de déjouer les injonctions sociales, pour aspirer à la liberté de vivre la vie qu’elle souhaitait. 💕 Il s’agit d’un role model incroyablement fort. Une femme ambitieuse, passionnée, sauvage et aimante qui a eu de nombreuses vies, aux quatres coins du monde, à une époque où Internet et les avions ne nous reliaient pas. Elle inspire à avoir des rêves plus grands que nos limites et à déjouer les injonctions patriarcales. ✨ Je ne suis habituellement pas une grande fan des biographies mais celle-ci m’a transportée. Il s’agit d’un hymne à la passion et au voyage avec une écriture fougueuse et intime. J’ai appréciée plonger dans les insécurités de cette femme forte et audatieuse qui la rend minitueusement humaine et empathique. Très fouillée, le travail de documentation est remarquable. ✍🏼 Fanny Van de Grift est notamment connue pour avoir été l’épouse de l'illustre écrivain écossais Robert Louis Stevenson, auteur de L’Île au Trésor et de Voyage avec un âne dans Les Cévennes. Et c’est pour moi là où le bât blesse dans l’écriture de la vie de cette femme qui est encore malhereusement bien trop souvent associée à ses relations avec les hommes alors qu’elle se suffit entièrement à elle-même. 🧚🏼♀️ Au-delà de procédé littéraire qui la présente comme “fille de” ou “femme de”, je trouve ça intéressant de porter un regard féministe sur sa vie. Alors qu’elle déjouait avec force et intuition le patriarcat dans ses choix de vie, on voit cette forte Fanny toujours rattrrapé par sa condition de femme, de mère ou d’épouse. On la découvre se donner corps et âme à ses partenaires qui ne savent pas l’aimer avec respect. Ce livre m’a profondément fait voyager, pleurer et inspirée. Hello from Fallon, Nevada! Yesterday's driving route from The Redwoods to Fallon took me on some gorgeous highways and byways. At every turn my eyes were filled with rolling hills and mountains, wild running rivers and sleepy gentle grassy bank creeks. I wanted to stop and get lost in the beauty... or at least take some photos. I decided though to keep moving and instead of capturing those moments I chose to just soak them up in my heart and mind. I did make a stop at The Highland Art Center in Weaverville. Located on Main Street, I saw it from a distance and made a spontaneous U-turn when I saw the open sign. I was welcomed in by a vivacious redhead [is there any other kind?] who straight away led me to their featured exhibit of art by local students grades kindergarten through high school. I was impressed! So much unbridled creativity. Then a student came in to find which art of her submissions was on display. Her pen and ink drawings at age 12 were pretty epic. I congratulated her and asked if I could photograph her art. I did not tell her I was an artist. I reveled in meeting her, the artist, of one of the artworks on display. Today I will hit Highway 95 heading to Las Vegas to my childhood home. I have 3 planned stops along the way as there are eclectic points of interest in this desert. I will be skirting right by Death Valley which is less than two hours from my mom's house. I plan to spend some time exploring there during my two week stay and capture many photos as well as do some plein air paint. [Fancy artist speak for painting scenes while outside] I'm wondering about van camping there one night for what must be some of the best star gazing in the world. From the forest to the desert, the natural world is brimming with beauty and inspiration. This year has been a whirlwind of adventure, ticking off destinations that have been on my radar for ages. First, it was Svalbard (5 years), then Madeira (4, I think?), and now, Catania with the iconic Etna (6 or even 7?!) 🌋 Looking back, I realize that the delay in experiencing these destinations was a blessing in disguise. Had I visited them earlier, I might not have fully appreciate them. Stop n°3 : Seville, the capital of Andalusia. It is very beautiful , but this was my least favourite city I've visited in the region. I'm not saying I didn't like it, just that I thought it would be more special. I went back a few days later, as I had to catch my bus for Portugal. I was there during the Feria. OMG what an experience. For over a week, it is all about music. Everyone dresses fancy, lots of drinking are happening. This is the most popular Feria and you should definitely go.
